New Ghostbusters Movie: Yay? Yes, Yay!

Normally when '80s remake news makes its way to my computer screen, my knee-jerk reaction is something like, "People! Get some creativity and let that decade rest in peace already!" This morning, however, I read several confirmations that Ghostbusters 3 is in the works and surprised myself by feeling very, very excited.

I think there are several reasons for this including:

It has a good chance of not sucking, because it's in very capable hands. Two Emmy-nominated writers from The Office, Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, have been recruited "to work on a new installment of the 1980s franchise that starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Harold Ramis as bumbling ghost-hunting scientists."
The Hollywood Reporter also notes that "the original filmmakers, including director Ivan Reitman, and cast are aware of the project and involved in its development." Blessing from original director and cast? Another excellent sign.
And finally, it appears that we may get the best of both worlds cast-wise. Variety says the idea is to get the old gang back together in some capacity, while the Hollywood Reporter says that while original cast members may appear, the focus will be on a new group of ghostbusters. Either way, all signs point to some infusion of new talent. For example, E! has a quote from Dan Aykroyd implying he would love to have the Apatow comedy troupe involved. This is a good thing, because I'd hate to see the old ghostbusters strapping on their proton packs only to complain about how heavy they suddenly feel. I'd be worried a movie that only reunites the old cast one last time would feel too much like Wild Hogs.

So while there's a lot still up in the air, this news gets a big fat yay from me so far! What do you think? Are you excited for a third installment of this movie, and does it sound to you like it could actually be good? What actors would you want to see in a potential new cast? George Clooney and Jason Reitman — Team Awesome?

I'm really happy about this movie news: George Clooney and director Jason Reitman (Juno, Thank You For Smoking) may be teaming up for the film adaptation of the Walter Kirn novel Up in the Air. Variety has details:

Clooney will play an unapologetic corporate downsizer whose untethered life is consumed by collecting air miles. . . . Reitman had separately been infatuated with the book and came into Montecito [Picture Co.] with 30 pages that showed how he saw the film. He has been writing it on and off for five years, putting it down when he read Diablo Cody’s Juno script. Reitman returned to the project in the Spring. He completed the script weeks ago and just showed it to Clooney.

It's clear that this is a labor of love for Reitman, and now he's got the dapper Clooney on his side. I can't wait to see what these two cook up.

Aaron Sorkin Joins Facebook to Write Facebook Movie

I find this movie news intriguing, baffling and preposterous all at the same time. Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (you know, The West Wing, Charlie Wilson's War, the ill-fated Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, among others) wants to write a movie about Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. These are the things that strike me most about this news:

Sorkin had never used Facebook and just recently started an account and a group page for this movie because, he writes, "I figured a good first step in my preparation would be finding out what Facebook is, so I've started this page."
Sorkin is very open and receptive to comments and questions on his Facebook page, and the responses he's getting are starting to challenge what his previous perceptions of the Internet, and the Internet's effect on our society — in a positive way. "I have very strong feelings about the internet and its effect on our national culture, but frankly those feelings are being countered by the sophistication, kindness, curiosity and wit of the posts in this site," writes Sorkin. "You people are screwing me up with your civility and intelligence."
So, Sorkin had (apparently negative) preconceived notions about the Internet's effect on our culture and wanted to make a movie about Facebook — all without having actually used this major social networking site. . .which is on the Internet.
Finally, a whole movie about computer programming? Huh.

Hilary Swank Buys Up Rights to Something Borrowed

Soon, author Emily Giffin will find something of hers borrowed for the big screen — her stories. Hilary Swank and her producing partner Molly Smith have bought the rights to Giffin's popular novels Something Borrowed and Something Blue, and they may end up being "starring vehicles" for Swank. We were just talking about these producing partners and another book-to-movie deal that may star Swank: French Women Don't Get Fat. That Hilary Swank! She keeps busy.

Variety explains that Something Borrowed follows "a Manhattan attorney who becomes involved with her best friend's fiance following her 30th birthday." Something Borrowed is my favorite of all of Giffin's books (it even inspired a Buzzworthy Challenge way back when) so I really hope they don't mess this up! Along the same lines, I don't really envision Swank in this role. At all. I might be on a Rebecca Hall kick after seeing her in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, but I really think she'd be a better fit. Or. . .anyone else. What do you think? Have you read Giffin's books?

Have You Ever Watched a Horror Film Alone?

I was just asking you guys if you go to the movies alone, and here we have some news about that very thing. Only this news is way more bizarre than just taking in a Saturday matinee by oneself. A 30-year-old man in India, Pavin Ponanna, bought all the seats to a showing of the horror film Phoonk, just so he could watch the movie alone. Why? Apparently the film's director, Bollywood producer-director Ram Gopal Verma, claimed his movie was so scary, nobody could watch it alone. So, Ponanna set out to prove him wrong.

In preparation for the big scary night, Ponanna visited a temple and asked the cinema staff to have a doctor on call, but when the film was over Ponanna claimed, "I never felt scared, not even for a moment. I took just 10 minutes to settle down." The whole thing cost him 47,000 rupees ($1,160) in tickets. You can check out the trailer for Phoonk here.
