Buzz Gift Guide: All SATC, All the Time

Welcome back to my Buzz Gift Guide series for all the entertainment lovers in your life. Last week I thought up some gifts for all the young'ns in your life so this week it's all about your peers.

For a while there it felt like there was nothing else to talk about in entertainmentland other than Sex and the City thanks to the HBO series' leap to the big screen. I have plenty of girlfriends (and guy friends come to think of it) who would love the movie on DVD this holiday season. And for those friends who desperately miss the TV series itself, this complete DVD set would make them pretty happy.

Then there are the superfans that are completely fluent in the show's history. For them I'd recommend this Sex and the City trivia game (I've played it before and some of us were so knowledgeable about the show, we made the game more challenging by reading the answer first and then coming up with the question, Jeopardy-style). Finally, some SATC fanatics might get a kick out of t-shirts inspired by the show including this one celebrating singlehood and this one about searching for your own Mr. Big.

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue. In addition to my selections below, you can also check out the dreamboat special that is Leatherheads and Simon Pegg's comedy Run, Fat Boy, Run.

Sex and the City: The Movie
Well, the big day has arrived: the Sex and the City movie is here for you to rent or own. Whether you missed this one in theaters (hard to imagine) or are excited to fast-forward to your favorite parts, the fab four has come full circle back to your small screen. I'm interested in revisiting this one, since the movie is super long and there is a lot to take in.

This is the kind of movie for which special features were made. Get a load of these: commentary by director Michael Patrick King; a conversation with Sarah Jessica Parker and Michael Patrick King; featurettes titled, "The Fabulous Fashion of Sex and the City," "Fergie in the Studio: Watch a Hit in the Making as the Singer Records Labels or Love for the Movie Soundtrack," and additional scenes.

Candace Bushnell to Write YA Books About Carrie's Teen Years

Ever wonder about Carrie Bradshaw's teenage years? Well, Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell will fill in all the blanks for us with a pair of young adult novels that will follow Carrie in her "formative high school years." The Huffington Post has more:

Bushnell, in a statement issued by her publisher, said, "Carrie in high school did not follow the crowd — she led it. It was there that she began observing and commenting on the social scene."

I'll be very interested to find out how Bushnell balances Carrie being the leader of the popular crowd as well as the one "observing and commenting." Also, how long do you think it'll be before these books are adapted for TV (most likely the CW)? By then I will have to stop picturing Sarah Jessica Parker as a teenager in Square Pegs (see above). I think I'd rather see something like that than another Gossip Girl knockoff, but who knows? Maybe these books will be totally fabulous.

Warner Bros. Hoping to Fast-Track the SATC Sequel

There was plenty of sequel chatter immediately following the major box office success of the Sex and the City movie, but now certain head honchos are confirming that there is "a lot of energy behind doing another SATC movie." According to EW, "a sequel to the Sex and the City movie is in the early stages of development."

HBO's president of programming group, Michael Lombardo, mentioned that they're "really heartened by the fans' enthusiasm," and a source confirmed that Warner Bros. hopes to fast-track the project, though there is still no deal and no script. In fact, EW notes that "the lead actresses involved are taking a cautious attitude towards another film, not wanting to rush a sequel and risk disappointing their loyal fans."

Tons of you have voted that you'd love to see a SATC sequel, though I have to wonder, what could this sequel be about? What would you like to see in a sequel? Babies? New non-white assistants? Even bigger shoe closets? Sound off below.

Kim Cattrall Showing Skin at HBO Again

While the Sex and the City movie is smashing box office records, it seems like a good time for Kim Cattrall to plot her next move. And plot she is, with today's news that the alter ego of one Samantha Jones will produce and star in a new HBO comedy.

The show bears the slightly icky title of Sensitive Skin — though it's an adaptation of a British series of the same name, so I guess I can't blame Cattrall for that choice. Its plot and main character sound right up Cattrall's alley: According to the Hollywood Reporter, the show "centers on a middle-aged wife and mother in New York who rediscovers her sexuality and begins to question her place in the world and the choices she has made in life." Fun fact: The BBC version starred Joanna Lumley, best-known as Patsy in Absolutely Fabulous.

The original show will be released on DVD for the first time in August, so we'll have plenty of time to check it out before Cattrall's version hits the air. But for now, tell me: Are you ready to see Cattrall heading up her own series? And does this sound like a good role for her — or just more of the same?

The stars of the Sex and the City movie were hinting at a sequel before the weekend but now that the film was such a smash success at the box office, the talk for another movie has reached a fever pitch. Makes you wonder if Sarah Jessica Parker and Michael Patrick King are huddled together as we speak to brainstorm sequel ideas.Are you on board for a sequel? Or was one movie enough? Box Office: SATC Sticks a Stiletto in the Competition

As the saying goes: If you build it, they will come. Which was indeed the case this weekend for Sarah Jessica Parker and Michael Patrick King's two and a half hour fête gifted to devoted fans who showed up in droves to support Sex and the City's move to the big screen.

The movie smashed every record for an R-rated comedy and proved that women can drive box office sales just like men. SATC earned an estimated $55.7 million prompting Warner president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman to quote in Variety:

This has become a cultural phenomenon. What this shows is that given the right project, you can create a frenzy for the female aud, just like we are used to with boys and men.

The film was "the strongest ever for a movie carried by a female lead," beating the record-holder Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Sarah Jessica Parker told the New York Times, "I am so excited about the possibilities for movies about women.”

Dropping to the No. 2 spot, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull still had a strong second weekend earning an additional $46 million. Even the third spot was a shock to many with the seriously spooky The Strangers taking in an estimated $20.7 million. That's really good if you compare it to the approximate $9 million the movie cost to produce. Iron Man dropped to the fourth spot followed by The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian at No. 5.

Sex and the City: Sugary Sweet With a Sad Center

Despite the fact that I've never owned shoes in the $500+ range and have never been a single and fabulous 30-something (or 40-something) New Yorker, I related to and loved the characters on Sex and the City. Every week I could count on seeing four women who placed a high value on their female friendships rather than tearing each other down (ahem, The Hills), who fought bravely against those who would look down on them for being unmarried, and who talked candidly about not just sex, but everything. Amidst hardship, lapses in judgment, and insecurities, they were smart ladies who had the understanding that life — even for the truly sophisticated — is no fairytale.

Some of these cherished characteristics translated well to the big screen version and I'm so thankful for that. But I'm also a bit mystified by how far it strays at times from the very aspects I loved so much. I wish I could say that it's a witty and modern take on the meaning of love and friendship for middle-aged women (and women approaching middle-age). Instead, the film is at times a fun fantasy, but it's not the Sex and the City I remember.

You know I'm excited about the Sex and the City movie and I had a blast at our exclusive screening last night! But over the past few weeks I've been chatting with friends and coworkers about certain apprehensions we had about how the movie might turn out. The biggest qualm I heard was that people really liked the way Sex and the City wrapped up when it was on TV, and there was some fear that the movie's ending wouldn't be as satisfying.

I bet some of you are feeling similarly, so I thought I'd ask you what your best-case and worst-case scenarios are for the movie. What would you like to see happen? What do you fervently hope doesn't? And are any of you so nervous about the big-screen adaptation that you plan to stay away from it entirely? Sound off below.

Album Review: The Sex and the City Movie Soundtrack

I was lucky enough to take an advance spin of the new soundtrack for the Sex and the City movie and I immediately thought of good times with girlfriends. In aggregate, it's not entirely a get-up-and-shake-your-booty kind of mix, but just a cool bunch of songs about love and friendship. I think it would be quite perfect for the background music at a hip wedding shower actually.

The soundtrack is packed with a bunch of recognizable names, like Jennifer Hudson, whose tune "All Dressed in Love" is a cute, uptempo disco anthem that reminds me of the exuberance found in "It's Raining Men." Morningwood's (ha! That name!) "New York Girls" is not my favorite, and if I were in charge of finding a good retro-rock vibe for the album (or the movie) I would have gone with Franz Ferdinand or even the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. That and the smooth techno beats in "I Like the Way" by Kaskade are the kinds of tracks mixed between better songs that give the whole thing the "background music" vibe I'm talking about.

Tonight on Bravo: Inside the Actors Studio With Sarah Jessica Parker

The hour is almost upon us, folks, and while some people are a little tired of the promotional blitz surrounding the Sex and the City movie, I am still curious — and excited — to see the ladies reunited on screen. Another thing I don't tire of is hearing an actress I love describe her work and career. It's fascinating to hear in-depth discussions about a successful working actor's filmography.

That's why I'm looking forward to Sarah Jessica Parker's appearance on Bravo's Inside the Actors Studio tonight. She'll hopefully give up more juicy details on the SATC movie, though I'm excited to hear about the rest of her career and life before Carrie Bradshaw. I hope James Lipton covers her work on Square Pegs and projects from early in her career like Footloose and L.A. Story.

Seems like it was just yesterday folks were confirming that the Sex and the City movie had been greenlit, and now there are mere weeks until it hits theaters. Recently, I've overheard people reluctantly admit that they haven't really watched the show, and it inspired me to put together a list of quintessential episodes for anyone looking to catch up on the ladies' saucy relationships and touching friendships before the movie hits theaters May 30. These episodes are meant to be in addition to the series premiere (remember when Carrie would break away and talk straight to camera, not unlike Zack Morris on Saved By the Bell?) and the finale. As I was perusing the movie's website last night I came across the little online quiz in which you can find out who your manly SATC match would be. And yup, I got Harry. Despite rumors that Universal Pictures did not want Rose McGowan to play Barbarella in an upcoming remake, she insists she's got the role and has the contracts to prove it, ComingSoon reports.
Adrien Brody is set to star in a thriller called Giallo about a search for a woman abducted by a serial killer named Yellow, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Heroes creator Tim Kring has signed on to co-write a book trilogy, USA Today reports.
Mariah Carey's having a good week as her single "Touch My Body" has scored a second week at No. 1, Billboard reports.

Neil Patrick Harris doesn't think How I Met Your Mother needs any more guest stars, the Associated Press reports.
EW has new details about the Sex and the City movie soundtrack that will include Fergie and Jennifer Hudson.
In pilot casting news, Zap2it reports that Donal Logue has joined the cast of 1% on HBO, while TV Guide reports that Marcia Gay Harden has been cast in The Tower, a CBS journalism drama.

How Much Would You Pay to Attend the SATC Movie Red Carpet Premiere?

In recent months, celebrities have been raising awareness for the relief and development organization Oxfam by collaborating on eBay auctions for things like Shakira's clothes and radios signed by Tom Hanks, as well as tickets to the red carpet premieres of movies like Mamma Mia! and He's Just Not That Into You. Just a few days ago, a woman from Japan had the highest bid for a trip to the Manhattan premiere of the Sex and the City movie. The bidding started at $0.99 and the winning bid was for $52,100, all of which will go to Oxfam.

As the winner, she receives a pair of tickets to the premiere, arriving via chauffeured car service after having her hair and makeup done at Manhattan’s Prive Salon. At the premiere, she'll have an on-camera "meet and greet" with Kristin Davis. And she also gets a pair of Jimmy Choos in her size.

I'd say this is a pretty sweet package. Of course, most of us don't have $52,000 to spend on an online auction for movie premiere passes, but I could definitely envision mega-fans of Sex and the City paying some hefty sums for this kind of thing. What would be your cutoff for a package like this? To walk the red carpet, if not with then at least near the glamorous ladies of Sex and the City and to attend the premiere of the film with them?

SJP Honored at ShoWest, Addresses Rumors of a Death in SATC Movie

In her smart, gracious way, Sarah Jessica Parker fielded questions about the Sex and the City movie when she accepted the first ever Vanguard Award at ShoWest in Las Vegas. Though it's news to me, there's apparently a rumor going around that one of the characters will die in the movie. Trying to address the question without revealing too much, Parker explained that they wanted to make a "grown up" movie with some "seriousness." ComingSoon has more from ShoWest:

What we tried to do is it's a grown-up movie and I think those people that have seen it have been very surprised. There's a seriousness about something that happens in this movie and it's really about real life and your own complicity and disappointments and the necessity of friends at certain points, but really, as a grown-up to really take care of yourself. There's still plenty of ribald, salty, dirty stuff, but I think it's a really smart story. I think Michael Patrick (King, writer and director of the film) wrote a beautiful screenplay and selfishly, I feel like he wrote the role of a lifetime for me, and it was just an amazing experience.

So, the death is neither confirmed nor denied. This news has revved up my imagination, distracting me with thoughts about who — if anyone — might die in the movie. Does the part of the trailer when she drops her phone take on new significance? Interesting. Seriously, May 30 can't get here quickly enough.

This year we've seen two network TV shows, Cashmere Mafia and Lipstick Jungle, that have tried to recreate the magic of HBO's Sex and the City, with mixed results. By contrast, HBO itself is moving on, leaving SATC for the big screen and once again developing interesting and unexpected female-driven projects.

Jill Scott and Anika Noni Rose will star in Oscar-winning director Anthony Minghella's adaptation of the popular book series the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. The project, about an all-female private detective agency in Botswana, was originally developed as a movie. Variety reports that this story will now be told on the small screen as HBO has ordered 13 episodes of it. The Oscars are coming! The Oscars are coming! All week I have been previewing foreign films, breaking down the best picture nominees, and sharing pictures from best costume nominees. Oh, and I also made some bold predictions for who would win. Here's hoping you feel fully prepped for Sunday!
I've been sticking with Lipstick Jungle and Cashmere Mafia, mentally willing them to be better, but let's face it: Weeks of those shows still couldn't match what seconds of the trailer for the Sex and the City movie did for my happiness levels.

American Idol is truly back as the first 12 guys and girls hit the stage. I definitely was not shocked with who was sent packing; were you?

It's here! The highly anticipated, full-length trailer for this Spring's Sex and the City movie has arrived.

There's Mr. Big and wedding talk, bawdy jokes as usual and an introduction to Carrie's personal assistant, played by Jennifer Hudson.

It's super cute as expected, though slightly sentimental-cheesy (the "Forgiveness" song?). Still, I'm just as excited as ever to see this movie when it opens May 30. You should definitely watch the trailer yourself, so

We already knew that Mr. Big was back for the "Sex and the City" movie, and I was pretty sure it was only a matter of time before the other main men were confirmed as well. Now it's official, according to MTV: Smith Jerrod (Jason Lewis), Steve (David Eigenberg) and Harry (Evan Handler) will all be in the "Sex and the City" movie, joining the four main ladies, Mr. Big and um, Jennifer Hudson. Welcome back, gentlemen.

I have to say, a part of me would love to see Aidan on the big screen somehow, too. Le sigh.

What do you think about this news? Would you like to see some ~~fresh meat~~ new guys join the cast to spice things up? Or is it best that they stick with the old familiar?

Mark Your Calendars: "Sex and the City" in Theaters May 30!

As soon as you get ahold of your 2008 calendars, draw a big, fat heart around May 30. According to MTV, this is the date when Carrie, Miranda, Samantha, Charlotte, Big and the rest of the gang (including, randomly, Jennifer Hudson) will be coming to a theater near you!

It's a great sign for the movie that the producers want to release it on the first big weekend of the summer. So far, the ladies will be competing at the box office with an Eddie Murphy comedy Starship Dave and the Kristen Bell comedy (produced by Judd Apatow) Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

Now, it seems we have everything in place for the "Sex and the City" movie... except for that pesky little plot, about which filmmakers and actors are remaining mum. Stay tuned, and clear your schedule for May 30!

Jennifer Hudson Joins "Sex and the City" Movie

Having won her Oscar, Jennifer Hudson is thankfully not content to rest on her laurels and/or fade into eventual obscurity. Variety is reporting that the Dreamgirls diva has joined the cast of the feature-length film based on "Sex and the City." Here's more:

Hudson, who's in final negotiations, will portray the assistant to Sarah Jessica Parker's Carrie Bradshaw. Pic revolves around the lives of the four main "Sex and the City" characters, four years after the time frame of the finale of the HBO series, which wrapped its six-year run in 2004.

How great would it be if Hudson's character has some relationship advice for Carrie that she feels is best expressed through song?

Have No Fear, Mr. Big Is Here

Well, this is some strange timing, but no need to worry about seeing the movie without him — Chris Noth is definitely signed on to play Mr. Big in the "Sex and the City" movie. Variety confirms today that Noth will be joining the four main characters played by Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon in the big screen adaptation of one of HBO's most sensational series. Variety goes on to note, however, "New Line hasn't released details about the exact storyline for the feature."

I'm relieved by this news. I was sure Noth wouldn't disappoint all the many "SATC" fans by not starring in the movie, but it made me nervous the longer he wasn't confirmed. Now I'd just like to know about that plot line...

The Results Are In: Recast "Sex and the City"

Every Wednesday on BuzzSugar, I post a Recast challenge, where I ask you to choose new actors for a classic TV show or movie. The reader who submits the best cast wins a BuzzSugar t-shirt!

This week's recast challenge was the most exciting recast ever, by far! It was so much fun reading through over 100 comments, though this also made it the most difficult recast decision to make. There were so many fantastic recast lists, but I did have to choose just one.

However, almost all of the lists submitted included actors who are younger than the ones from the original cast when "SATC" first started. Thus, the winning recast list does include younger actors, though, with a couple exceptions, they're mostly younger by just a few years.

As for individual castings that I loved, some of my favorites included casting Tina Fey as Miranda, Will Smith as Mr. Big and Elizabeth Banks as Carrie, though I was impressed with many of the other ideas as well. "Sex and the City" Movie Gets the Green Light

After plenty of hedging and hinting, we now have an official report that the makers of HBO's hit series "Sex and the City" will make a feature-length movie based on the show. Production is scheduled to begin in the fall. The article continues:

Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon are all set to reprise their roles, with longtime exec producer Michael Patrick King directing a script he wrote.

The film got close to happening about two years ago, but progress halted when Cattrall backed away. She wanted script controls and a salary close to that of Parker, who was more highly paid than the others because she was co-executive producer of the series. Whatever tensions existed are gone now, sources said. Cattrall has a deal she’s happy with, one the sources said gives her input on her scenes, a fat salary and a future series deal with HBO.

No news yet on whether other actors from the show (ahem, Chris Noth) will be back for the movie, but I'll keep you posted. Here's hoping the movie version comes out well and doesn't taint the fond memories I have of the original series!

Great TV Wedding Moments: "Sex and the City"

As we've mentioned, it's wedding planning mania here on the Sugar Network, and throughout the next couple of weeks, I'll be sharing some of my favorite wedding moments from television.

When it comes to wedding planning and romance in general, Cynthia Nixon's Miranda character on "Sex and the City" isn't big on tradition, and that's one reason I love this scene from the season six episode entitled "The Ick Factor."
