Jumper: Teleport Yourself Far Away From This One

The sci-fi "thriller" Jumper can be described in one word: empty. Pretty much everything about this movie is devoid of any real energy, passion or substance. The performances are stale and lifeless, the plot is interesting in theory but fails in execution and the visuals aren't cool enough to keep us engaged. The plot is boringly similar to that of Heroes (which is itself like a clone of X-Men), and yet Heroes is so much more enjoyable. At least Heroes features intriguing characters who might band together for a higher purpose. Lacking both good characters and any kind of higher purpose, Jumper just lays there.

Here's the plot: David (Christensen) is a "Jumper," someone who can teleport himself. The Jumpers of the world are at odds with the Paladins, and one Paladin in particular, Roland (Samuel L. Jackson) is on a mission to rid the world of all Jumpers everywhere. In his pursuit, he has no problem killing all of the jumpers' loved ones. Hence, David's lady friend Millie (Rachel Bilson) is in danger, and David must protect her as well as elude Roland's grasp. That's it for the story, but for more of my thoughts on the film,

So I'm sitting there watching Chuck, and everything seems pretty normal: There's a spy case. Chuck bumbles through a date. Casey says something funny. There's danger. Morgan's half-endearing, half-annoying. The usual.

Every Wednesday on BuzzSugar, I post a Recast challenge, where I ask you to choose new actors for a classic TV show or movie. The reader who submits the best cast wins a BuzzSugar T-shirt!

Yes, I recognize that to some of you it is sacrilege to recast a movie as beloved as Say Anything, but that didn't stop many others from submitting their recast lists! My personal favorites were the actors selected to play Diane's father, James Court. I loved that kateaustin456 kept it in the Frasier family with Kelsey Grammar, and dollymama's pick of David Duchovny is great, as he plays morally ambiguous rather well.

I also liked that many of the James Court ideas were drawn from current TV shows, from Steve Carell (Jean_Metro's pick), to Kyle MacLachlan (leeluvfashion) to Alec Baldwin (pistonsjenny) to Lost's Terry O'Quinn (WhiplashGirlchild).

I found the ideas for Lloyd's sister Constance Dobler to be really thoughtful, like EmPaige's nod to the original with Lily Taylor, and, most especially BellaCalla's idea of Jenna Fischer.

Chuck Rundown: Episode 8, "Chuck Vs. The Truth"

I'm no expert in the spy genre, but I've heard and seen enough stories involving "truth serum" to know that I should have expected that plotline to turn up on Chuck eventually. But I really liked the way the show used the idea of the honesty drug, taking Chuck's relationships with both Sarah and his sister to new levels while giving us some of the best laugh-out-loud lines yet. TV Tonight: Chuck

I've been enjoying my weekly Chuck fix well enough so far this season, but things might get a whole lot better tonight, when Rachel Bilson joins the cast.

Bilson's playing Lou, a potential love interest for Chuck (and barrier to any sort of legit Chuck-Sarah romance, presumably). From this first clip of Lou meeting Chuck when she brings her cell phone into the Buy More for a repair, she looks to be just as lovably neurotic as I'd hoped. And she's obsessed with sandwiches! How cute is that? Even Morgan calling Chuck a "mind-cheater" cracked me up.

Movie Preview: Jumper

Jumper is a sci-fi movie starring Hayden Christensen, Samuel L. Jackson and Rachel Bilson. Christensen plays a teenager who discovers that he has the power to teleport himself to various places. Using this power, he begins an extensive search for the man he believes killed his mother. None of this is very apparent from the new trailer for Jumper, however, which mainly shows off the teenager's teleporting skills, a little Star Wars-y reunion with Christensen and Jackson, and Rachel Bilson playing the cute girlfriend. Rachel Bilson Sets Her Eye on "Chuck"

Pop's pleas have been answered.
USA Today is reporting that Rachel Bilson will guest-star on "Chuck," one of the new shows from "The OC" creator Josh Schwartz.

Even better:
She's going to be playing a romantic interest for lead character Chuck, a nerdy employee at a Best Buy-type store who gets the nation's spy secrets downloaded into his brain. No word on how many episodes she'll get.

It's been a big week for those "OC" kids.
Mischa Barton has three movies in the works, and Adam Brody just picked his next project.

Take that, Tate Donovan!
Earlier this week, the former Mr. Cooper blamed the young stars of "The OC" for the show's cancellation, claiming they didn't want to be on television. But it seems like Bilson is up for more TV, especially a show in "The OC" family. And hey, at least she's working again — and on one of my favorite fall shows, too.

The Results Are In: Recast Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Every Wednesday on BuzzSugar, I post a Recast challenge, where I ask you to choose new actors for a classic TV show or movie and the winner gets a BuzzSugar t-shirt!

This week's movie was clearly a beloved favorite for many of you — and it looks like you had a lot of fun thinking of new actors for Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Of course, nobody will ever be able to replace the mischievous Matthew Broderick as Ferris Bueller, though I liked many of the choices, in particular the popular choice of Ryan Reynolds.

It was entertaining to see who you chose for the role of Ed Rooney — Pinkrabbit's pick of Will Arnett and hokku241's suggestion of Quentin Tarantino were among my favorites. Casting Jena Malone as Jeanie, as hollywoodholiday offered up, is another fun idea.

But the best cast overall came from sumbum, whose choices all seemed young enough to play high-schoolers, and Michael Cera would be ideal as Cameron! Congrats, sumbum!

"The OC" Recap: Episode 16, "The End's Not Near, It's Here"

So the series finale of the "The OC" has come and gone, with an hour of television that was at once wonderful and terrible. For the first 20 minutes or so, I found myself wanting to tap the actors on the shoulders and remind them that this was, in fact, the final episode ever and could they please stop wasting time on silly trivialities, such as exposition and Taylor's blog?

Fortunately, about halfway through the episode, they seemed to get the message, delivering plenty of juicy details and referencing everything from The Graduate and "Six Feet Under" to "Deal or No Deal" and "The OC's" own demise. To find out what happened,

TV Tonight: "The OC" Series Finale

I've said it once and I'll say it again: "The OC" is officially over. Sure, the show hasn't been a ratings darling this season, but even I was shocked when Fox announced in early January that it was canceling the series for good.

Thankfully, after last week's rather lackluster post-earthquake episode, it looks like the writers have prepared the action-packed finale that this melodramatic show deserves. Time-wise, the final show picks up six months after the earthquake happens, which is kind of a cheap move but also lets us fast-forward to some juicy plot possibilities. Taylor has gone to France, the Cohens are living at the Coopers, and the previews are promising a baby and a wedding. To see a promo for tonight's episode and a clip,

"The OC" Recap: Episode 15, "The Night Moves"

Maybe it's because last week's episode of "The OC" ended in what looked to be the worst earthquake since the great San Francisco shake-up in 1906, but I was expecting something a little more earth-shattering on last night's show, "The Night Moves." (And for those of you wondering, yes, the title is a reference to the Bob Seger song of the same name. Oddly.)

I rushed home from the Sugar Publishing happy hour to catch last night's episode of "The OC." By the time the show ended at 10 p.m., I was feeling a little nauseated — and it wasn't from the cocktails. So just how sappy and ridiculous and flashback-filled was "The Case the Franks"? Let me just say: Had I spent the week eating only conversation hearts and clothing myself in rose petals, I don't think I could have written a more sickeningly sweet Valentine's Day episode than this one.

Taylor and Ryan are trying to decide how not to mess up the big day, when Taylor finds a mysterious address in Ryan's stuff. Turns out, it's the address of Frank Atwood, who Taylor agrees to help reconnect with Ryan. Meanwhile, Summer is troubled when a psychic says her soul mate is named George, so she goes to talk to Kirsten. Then, the episode basically becomes one giant big-hair flashback, so

"The OC" Recap: Episode 12, "The Groundhog Day"

You know a show is desperate for ideas when it's building plot lines around Groundhog Day, and that's precisely what happened on last night's episode of "The OC." Che is still in Newport and struggling with the revelation that his soul mate is a sea otter and, therefore, probably Seth. His other major concern: liberating the groundhog that is Newport's version of Punxsutawney Phil. He enlists Seth's help in freeing the critter, and thank goodness, because otherwise, we'd miss out on a number of old-fashioned Seth one-liners, which keep the episode from being a total waste.

Meanwhile, Kirsten is fretting about her health as her 40th birthday nears, and Kaitlin has been emailing Bullitt for about a month, pretending she is Julie. (Her latest message ends, "I miss your butt. Love, Julie." Classy.) To find out what happens,

"Growing Pains" started airing on Nick at Nite this weekend, so for last week's Recast challenge, I asked you guys to pick new actors for the roles Dr. and Mrs. Seaver, Mike and Carol, and, of course, Mike's sidekick, Boner. Many of you took it upon yourselves to cast the roles of siblings Ben and Chrissy Seaver, too, and I really admire that extra bit of effort!

"The OC" Recap: Episode 11, "The Dream Lover"

I'm really hoping the "The OC" will pull out all the stops now that the show is going off the air, and last night's over-the-top episode, "The Dream Lover," was a promising start. We've got two interlopers in Newport, including Che, who is getting weird Seth vibes, and Henri-Michel, who wants to rent a house in California and invites Taylor to move in.

Henri, after all, is willing to do anything to win his Peaches back. Taylor doesn't seem crazy about this idea but gives him credit for "really taking an emotional risk, unlike some people.” Meanwhile, Summer reassures Seth that "I still really love you. I hope we marry some day.” Soon, Seth sets off on a spiritual journey/camping trip with Che, while the rest of Newport's denizens embark on their own strange trips, so

"The O.C." Recap, Episode 10: "The French Connection"

Thursday night's episode of "The OC" focused mostly on Taylor and her French ex-husband, Henri-Michel, who makes Ryan feel threatened despite being a pretentious weenie. The episode starts as Taylor realizes that the hottest new erotic novel on the market, A Season for Peaches, is a thinly veiled account of their affair written by Herni. (Apparently, page 47 is where it gets really hot.) She begs Ryan not to read it, and he agrees — until he runs into the ex-hubby signing copies at a bookstore and breaks down.

Speaking of breakdowns, over at NewMatch, Julie is having a hard time hiding the male prostitution ring from Kirsten, who is getting suspicious. It certainly doesn't help when Kirsten overhears Julie promising a client that "this one will have his back waxed," which prompts Kirsten to steal Julie's cell phone to snoop.

Meanwhile, Seth is jetting up to Seattle to ask Dr. Roberts for Summer's hand in marriage, while Kaitlin Cooper has a romance of her own brewing, so

Season Recap: "The O.C."

Season four of Fox's "The O.C." got off to a rocky start. Given, a few hitches are expected when your main characters move into a new phase of their lives (e.g., graduating from high school), but the early part of the season was sorely lacking the campy melodrama we know and love. However, if you stopped watching after the first few episodes of Season 4, you should tune back in in January, because it's getting good again. (You can even sign a petition to save "The O.C.") Here's a recap of the season so far.

Just in case you missed it—maybe you live in Encino or something—Marissa Cooper died at the end of Season 3.
While Summer escapes to Brown University, Ryan defers college to take a job at a bar, Seth is working at the comic book store, and Taylor travels to France.

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I'll sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue.

The Last Kiss
At first sight I thought The Last Kiss would be Garden State all over again, only ten years later. In fact, The Last Kiss is a remake of the Italian film L'Ultimo Bacio and is more serious than Garden State, painting love as a grim and difficult thing. Zach Braff (one of my personal favorites) plays Michael, a thirtysomething guy with a nice job, a good group of buddies, and an adorable, charming girlfriend, Jenna (Jacinda Barrett). Jenna delivers some news that forces Michael to contemplate adulthood and commitment. As he grapples with deep thoughts about Growing Up, he meets the lovely Kim (Rachel Bilson), and his world grows even more complex. The subject matter is heavy, but there is enough humor to keep the film from feeling too bogged down, making this a good pick if you're in the mood for a thirtysomethings-in-relationships film.

The O.C. Recap: Episode 8, "The Earth Girls Are Easy"

It's tough running a male prostitution ring when your business partner still thinks it's merely a dating service. That's where we find Julie in Episode 8 of "The O.C.," when both Kirsten and Bullitt offer to help her keep the books. Feeling in over her head, she and Bullitt's son, Spencer, come up with another solution: They'll burn the evidence and extract themselves from the whoring business once and for all. That is, after they clean up from their New Year's bookings.

Meanwhile, Seth is in the kitchen with Sandy, mulling over a problem of his own: He has made absolutely no plans for New Year's, and Summer isn't happy about it. So, he just decides to tag along with Ryan, who's planning to surprise Taylor with a trip to Las Vegas.
