How I Met Your Mother Hires Heidi and Spencer

Yup, a rumor from last week has been confirmed: Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt are heading to How I Met Your Mother for a guest spot in an upcoming episode.

The Hills stars are on set to film their roles this week, and the episode will air in January. Series co-creator Craig Thomas joked to E! that "one of them is the Mother," but that's so obviously not true. What is true: Their part of the episode revolves around poop. How . . . oddly fitting.

Writes E!'s Kristin Dos Santos, Marshall will be lacking an appropriate place to do no. 2 at work. Then:

According to CBS, Spencer and Heidi will be playing magazine cover versions of themselves as Marshall searches for a place to "read a magazine." Speidi will taunt and tease Marshall from the confines of his current copy of Them Weekly.

Heh, Them Weekly.

Anyway, How I Met Your Mother showed it can handle big-name guest stars well with the Britney Spears episodes last Spring. But I'm curious to see whether Heidi and Spencer will draw viewers to the show — or repel them. Do you think this is a savvy move? Or does it seem risky to give these two even more exposure?

Buzz In: What's Your Ideal Night of TV?

Sometimes, I think network programmers manage to pair shows together perfectly (can't really argue with Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill). Other times, not so much (what do Knight Rider, random reality shows, and Lipstick Jungle have in common?). In this age of DVRs, I spend a lot of time thinking about how I'd rearrange the week if I could just create my own custom programming lineup.

So today, I wanted to pass that challenge on to you. What shows would you pair together if you could pick and choose anything you wanted from the lineup? Dramas, comedies, network and cable shows — anything's fair game. The only rule is that together, they should total three hours (the standard length of a network primetime programming block) or less.

I'll start you out with one of my current favorites: I dream of the TV happiness that would come from watching Greek followed by Privileged, moving into Samantha Who? and capping things off with How I Met Your Mother. What's your ideal night of TV?

30 Rock: Season Two
Tina Fey has been on a roll with her frequent appearances on Saturday Night Live but come Oct. 30 she'll return to her day job, 30 Rock. Is there anything this woman can't do? I for one will be adding this DVD of the show's second season to my collection. Special features include commentary by Fey, deleted scenes, a peek at the table read for the episode titled "Cooter," and a featurette called, "The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Presents: An Evening With 30 Rock."
How I Met Your Mother: Season Three
Another adorable television comedy I would love to own (hint, hint parents). Special features include Lily and Marshall's honeymoon videos, additional scenes, behind-the-scenes footage, an unrated gag reel and, of course, music videos!

TV Tonight: How I Met Your Mother

The end of the Emmys means the true start of the TV season, as networks start rolling out new episodes left and right (are you using my Fall TV calendar to keep track?). Up tonight: the CBS comedy block, which includes newcomer Worst Week and the delightful How I Met Your Mother.

A brief note about Worst Week: I didn't like the pilot very much, mostly because I found the main character unsympathetic and the pratfalls predictable. It's an interesting concept, though, and pretty different for CBS, so I'm curious to see how it does.

Meanwhile, How I Met Your Mother starts its fourth season by resolving the legendary (sorry, couldn't help it) cliffhanger of Ted's proposal to Stella. The show doesn't keep us waiting long for Stella's answer: After a montage of several possible reactions (played perfectly by Sarah Chalke), we see her real response within the first few minutes of the episode. Other things we see over the following 20 minutes or so: Star Wars references, Barney's struggle with having actual feelings for Robin (er, well, having actual feelings at all), a bored and troublemaking Marshall, and a rather amusing exploration of the art of the late-night hookup call. How I Met Your Mother Recap: Goats, Slaps, and Tramp Stamps

We've seen a lot of great preview clips for returning shows that will soon be back on the air to tie up last season's cliffhangers. But where's How I Met Your Mother? The CBS comedy finished strong last Spring, aided by a couple of guest appearances by Britney Spears, a great plotline involving Sarah Chalke as a candidate for "the mother," and a cliffhanger that's had me waiting all Summer for an answer. But though it premieres just a week from tonight, I still haven't seen much about what the new season holds — just a teeny tiny clip of Barney being, well, Barney.

So, for now, I suppose I'll have to be content with this adorable recap of season three, which hits all the highlights — tramp stamps, goats, slaps (lots of slaps), Robin Sparkles, and the potentially inappropriate bedding of best friends. Yup, that's what this show is all about.

The Hollywood Reporter has the news that Martin Scorsese is in talks with HBO to direct a dramatic pilot titled Boardwalk Empire. Scorsese is already a producer for the upcoming show about Atlantic City gamblers in the 1920s.
According to Variety, Pineapple Express had the best Wednesday opening ever for August. The comedy took in $12.1 million.
Regis Philbin is following in the footsteps of Britney Spears and is set to appear on the second episode of the upcoming season of How I Met Your Mother, Entertainment Weekly says.
The reunited Police closed its tour, the last live show ever for the band, last night in New York, reports Billboard.
The AP reports that Philip Seymour Hoffman is slated to direct a play in London later this year. The play, Riflemind, is about a rock band reuniting after a 20-year split. Sounds a lot like The Police!
Reuters reports that Hollywood producer Bernie Brillstein died last night of lung disease at the age of 77. He was best known for his work on The Blues Brothers and Happy Gilmore fame.
Pitchfork has the scoop on the soundtrack for the upcoming Michael Cera film Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. Vampire Weekend is collaborating with a member of Devo for the project. Awesome.

Welcome to the Writers' Room, Thanks to the New York Times

Earlier this year, TV writers were in the news like never before — but, unfortunately, that's because they were on strike. So, what's it like when they're working? The New York Times has given us a peek, taking us inside the rooms where the writers come up with the dramatic scenes and witty one-liners that make television so great.

The story goes inside five different writers' rooms. Awesomely, each one belongs to a favorite show of mine: Flight of the Conchords, Weeds, Damages, How I Met Your Mother, and House.

Some fun facts: The Damages room includes a rescued puppy who barks every time a page comes out of the printer. The Mother staff chomps salt-and-vinegar potato chips, while the Weeds room is a sugar-free zone. House writers actually use a whiteboard a la their title character when he's working on a diagnosis, and the Conchords spend a large portion of their day looking up old music videos on YouTube.

I was impressed by the patchwork pattern of colored index cards in the Conchords room that reportedly tracks "every idea [they've] ever had in the last six months," as well as by the fact that Weeds writers aren't allowed to have their cell phones in the room. Overall, it's a cool glimpse into a side of the writing life that we viewers don't get to see very often. Go check it out, and then tell me: What TV show do you imagine has the coolest writers' room? TV Tonight: How I Met Your Mother Gets Britney Back

After Britney Spears made her first appearance on How I Met Your Mother last month, show star Neil Patrick Harris got into a kind of media kerfuffle over whether he did or did not say he wanted to keep guest stars like Britney off the show. So I'm finding it a little amusing that when Brit returns to the show tonight, she seems to be spending most of her scenes with Harris.

Britney is back to reprise her role as Abby, the receptionist in Ted's dermatologist's office. As we now know, Ted and Stella have been dating — and raising all sorts of speculation that she's the mother — but Abby isn't faring quite so well. Not only did she have to watch Ted, who she believes might be the love of her life, run off with her boss, but she also suffered the indignity of sleeping with Barney and then never hearing from him again. (You and half the women in New York, Abby.) When the two meet again, though, they bond over their shared hatred of Ted and decide to show off like a couple — even showing up at the bar in matching baby-blue sweaters.

This episode looks like it will feature more of Britney than the two-line snippets we got last time. Do you think you'll be tuning in? Britney's last appearance brought in about a million extra viewers, and though the series is expected to be renewed at Wednesday's CBS upfronts regardless, it would still be nice to have another good showing. Faux Music Video: Robin Sparkles, "Sandcastles in the Sand"

Oh, How I Met Your Mother. Not only did they bring us a legen — wait for it — dary kiss last night, they also premiered the long-awaited B-side to Robin Sparkles' "Let's Go to the Mall," a mournful breakup ballad called "Sandcastles in the Sand." We got a preview of the video last week, but that didn't make the ultimate reveal any less amusing. (Admittedly, my biggest laugh in the episode came from a well-timed Degrassi joke — but that could just be me.)

The overwrought, obviously-written-by-a-16-year-old ballad included lines like "Together we were going to travel the globe/from Alberta to Ontrario," an awesomely bad makeout session with a character played by James Van Der Beek, and cameos from Tiffany and Alan Thicke to bring real '80s cred. I think the best description might be Barney's from the episode: "You know, if you re-edit it, there's a tampon commercial in there somewhere." It also made me think of this Wilson Phillips video for the first time in a decade or so, which I suppose is something to be proud of.

First Look: Robin Sparkles, "Sandcastles in the Sand"

The moment that How I Met Your Mother's Robin first revealed that she was the Canadian teen pop sensation Robin Sparkles, complete with hit single "Let's Go to the Mall," was one of the show's truly classic moments — not to mention one of my favorite online TV spots of all time.

On Monday, Robin Sparkles is back — this time with a little help from James Van Der Beek as an ex-boyfriend of Robin's who happened to star in the video for the B-side to "Let's Go to the Mall," a wistful breakup ballad called "Sandcastles in the Sand." Variety already has the whole song streaming online, but I'm holding off on listening to it until Monday. It's probably silly, but I want to be at least a little bit surprised.

I did, however, cave and watch some of the video teasers that have been released via CBS and MySpace. From the peeking I've done, I can tell the videos have a great, dated vibe, with a dose of Heidi Montag beach video and an amazingly awkward Dawson-related make-out scene. Can't wait till Monday? James Van Der Beek Heads to How I Met Your Mother

Seriously, won't someone give James Van Der Beek a full-time job? At least the ex-Capesider is staying busy with some decent guest-starring roles — first on Ugly Betty, then on the guest-star-happy How I Met Your Mother. (Don't tell anyone, but I might be more excited about this than I was about Britney.)

Van Der Beek will pop up in an upcoming episode that revisits Robin Sparkles, Robin's past life as a Canadian teen pop sensation. E! reports that while it's not confirmed yet, it's likely that he'll play Robin's crush from back in the day, whom she runs into again (and re-crushes on).

The episode will also reveal the B-side to the Sparkes single "Let's Go to the Mall" — apparently a soulful breakup ballad, rumored to be shot on a beach in black-and-white. Man, I can't wait to see that video.

There's no date set yet for Van Der Beek's appearance, but with only a few weeks left in this TV season, we shouldn't have to wait long. Here's hoping the next time I write about this guy, it will be for a job longer than one episode. I mean, not to get all competitive, but Pacey's doing pretty well for himself.

Rewind: This Week's Buzz

CBS learned a big lesson this week: Britney equals ratings gold. I learned you should never mess with the fanboys of Fanboys.
The Oliver Stone Bush biopic cast is quickly filling out. I wonder who's going to play Dick Cheney? Which reminds me, all that horse-loving talk aside, I'm starting to think Kristy Lee Cook is an evil genius.
This is one of those weeks where TV news makes a lot of sense and then none at all. I can understand why there is interest in shows about escorts after the Spitzer scandal. But a show that's just people falling? Really?
More good stuff came out of the Paley Festival in Los Angeles this week, including the goods on Gossip Girl, Damages and Dirty Sexy Money.
Well it's the end of the road for the March book club, thanks to everyone for reading along! I'm really excited about April's book, The Life Before Her Eyes. I hope you can hunt down a copy for yourself this weekend and join in. And don't worry, I can confidently state the new editions of these books will never be selected.

Britney on How I Met Your Mother: Yay or Nay?

So last night was Britney Spears' big acting comeback on How I Met Your Mother, and if the goal was to get some big ratings for the on-the-bubble comedy, it worked: The show pulled in 10.6 million viewers and hit its highest ratings ever in the key 18-49 demographic. Coupled with the better than average 9.7 million viewers the show got last week, I have to think things are looking pretty good for a season four. Personally, I thought the best part of the episode was Ted's two-minute date (watch it here), and I definitely think Stella was supposed to be the mother — had that whole Alicia Silverstone/Britney/Sarah Chalke thing not happened, that is. Pop had a split second clip of her earlier this week, which was enough to get us excited but not really showcase her role. How Do You Feel about High-Profile Guest Stars on TV?

This week, Law & Order: SVU announced something of a casting coup, saying it had gotten Robin Williams to guest-star on the show's 200th episode on April 29. It was already a big week for news about cameo appearances, anyway, as we're now counting down the days till Britney's big appearance on How I Met Your Mother. Show producers seem to especially love getting big-name guest stars for milestones and key ratings periods, like the February and May sweeps — and I expect we'll be seeing more guest stars this spring as shows try to drum up some attention in the aftermath of the writers' strike. I'm wondering: Do you like it when big-name actors or personalities show up on your favorite TV shows? Or do you just find it distracting? Source

TV Tonight: How I Met Your Mother

The Hollywood writers' strike ended more than a month ago, but tonight, it will finally start to feel over, as three CBS Monday comedies — The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, and Two and a Half Men — return with new episodes for the first time in months.

Of them, I'm most excited about How I Met Your Mother, which returns in its new 8:30 p.m. time slot with a St. Patrick's Day-themed episode called "No Tomorrow," in which Barney convinces Ted to toast the Irish by partying like there's . . . well, you know. This isn't the episode with Britney Spears, unfortunately — we have to wait another week for her highly anticipated guest spot — but there's a little Vanessa Minnillo action, if you're into that.

What's better than slapping your best friends across the face in a hilarious and unexpected manner? Why, singing about the slapping, of course! If you watched last night's very special Slapsgiving episode of How I Met Your Mother, you saw Marshall's latest slap of Barney — and you also saw the gang gathered around the piano at the end, singing an ode to the special moment.

Well, that's not all: The HIMYM crew recorded an official music video for the song, with Jason Segel's Marshall fancied up all in a tux and tails, slapping glasses off the top of his grand piano. All it's missing is Barney's warbling harmonies.

Happy Slapsgiving, everyone! Tonight on How I Met Your Mother, the slap bet makes its triumphant return. People raving about last year's inaugural slap bet was 80 percent of what convinced me to start watching the show, so I'm now ready to witness the genius for myself.

The idea behind this slap bet is that Marshall has let Barney in on when the slap is coming (remember SlapCountdown.com?). But something tells me it's not going to be so easy to prepare for the next hit. After much persuasion from Pop and several other friends, I've decided this will be the year I finally start watching "How I Met Your Mother" (OK, the Mandy Moore cameo on tonight's season premiere helped). I usually leave the celebrity gushing to Pop, but I have to make an exception for Mandy Moore, who I think is hilarious and best-friend-worthy and deserving of a lot more credit than she gets for her acting. I'm hopeful that her guest spot on the Sept. 24 season premiere of "How I Met Your Mother" will prove me right. Moore plays a hard-drinking, heavily tattooed bad girl whom Ted meets on his first night out on the town, and she's already got a couple of good lines just in this short clip from the episode. Continuing with the Sugar network's celebration of wedding season, this week I'll be bringing you some of my favorite TV moments and movies having to do with the actual Big Day itself.
Thank goodness for "How I Met Your Mother" which has provided us with some great material this wedding season. In this episode, It's Marshall and Lily's wedding day and nothing is going according to plan. Their intimate outdoor ceremony has turned into an indoor wedding for the masses, the harp player is in labor, Robin forgot to pack Lily's wedding underwear and to top it all off, Lily's cousin has given Marshall's hair blond tips! Marshall is at the end of his rope and decides that drastic times call for drastic measures. This wedding day scenario may cause the most romantic of us to want to elope!
