In this week's Grey's Anatomy, things went from bad to craaaa-zy as the two wildest plotlines of the season — the interns' secret surgery center and Izzie's relations with Denny's ghost — got even more out of control. That said, though, I can't remember the last time I was so excited to watch Grey's. This week, I got to spend a few minutes of phone time with Grey's Anatomy's newest regular cast member, Kevin McKidd. His Dr. Owen Hunt — er, that's McArmy to me — is bringing brooding back to Seattle Grace as a war veteran who's seen some dark times in the field. Now, the trauma specialist is deploying some of his unorthodox methods in the Grey's OR — and also prompting the normally reserved Cristina (Sandra Oh) to open up a bit. McKidd chatted with me about why he took the job, what it's really like on set, and what's in store for Hunt and Cristina. Here are highlights:

What initially appealed to you about Owen Hunt?
I liked the fact that he's very direct, he's very focused on his work, he's got a lot of baggage going on, he's trying to be very professional and not get involved with people at the hospital, but he's failing at that each day, because he keeps looking across and seeing Cristina. I'm drawn to the character because he has very noble ideas, I think, about medicine, but he's been though a lot recently and he's struggling with his own emotions. I think it's interesting to watch a highly intelligent surgeon not really have a full grip on himself because of what he's been through.

I think a lot of fans of the show, myself included, would say they're happy to see Cristina finally getting some action. Without giving too much away, will there be more of that?
I think you can put good money on that. I think those two have a deep connection going on between them. They aren't sure where it's coming from . . . We're watching the falling in love of two people who normally wouldn't give credence to that. It's fun and exciting. It's a very kind of touching and heartfelt journey.

Listen Up: The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra

This week's episode of Grey's Anatomy was a bit of a baffling mess, but at least I got one good thing out of it: the discovery of The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra. The LA band's song "The Uniform" from the Escapements EP kicked off Thursday's episode, and it stuck in my head enough that I needed to look it up first thing Friday morning.

Since then, I've become a bit addicted to a few of the other songs on the band's MySpace page, especially "Don't Be Fooled." With unusual rhythms, simple but universal lyrics, and an appealing interplay between the male and female vocals, they remind me of every band I used to love playing back when I was a college radio DJ. It's not revolutionary music or anything, but sometimes it's exactly what I want to hear.

Buzz In: What TV Deaths Shocked You Most?

We've been hearing rumors (and seeing funeral pics) about the death of a major character on Gossip Girl for a little while now and I think most fans of the show (including myself) can probably guess who it will be. I'm not saying who my guess is but if it comes true it probably won't be much of a surprise to anyone. Time will tell.

This got me thinking about television deaths that did take me by surprise. Lost fans, for example, can probably count several shocking deaths over the show's lifespan that came out of left field (and some that didn't, but were still sad). I still vividly remember the jaw-dropping shock I felt at the death of Teri Bauer on 24. And sometimes a television death may be predictable but still manage to bring about some tears of disbelief, like Denny's sad death on Grey's Anatomy.

When a TV death is genuinely a surprise it can be really disturbing, but at least it's all just make-believe entertainment. Which TV deaths have shocked you?

Private Practice and Grey's Anatomy Are Crossing Over

Remember how fun it was to see Addison return to Grey's Anatomy last Spring? Well, she's coming back — and this time, she might be bringing some of her Oceanside Wellness colleagues with her.

TV Guide is reporting that Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice will have a multiepisode crossover for February sweeps. While the exact number of episodes and characters involved is still being hammered out, one certain thing is that Addison will be returning to Seattle.

It's unclear whether the plot would take place both in Seattle and in Santa Monica, but it's definitely an intriguing idea — and maybe a good reason to keep watching Private Practice! Which Grey's docs do you think would have the most interesting trips to Oceanside? And which members of the Oceanside family would you like to see rubbing elbows with the residents and attendings at Seattle Grace?

TV Tonight: Grey's Anatomy

Tonight would probably have been just another episode of Grey's Anatomy, except for one thing: It's going to be Brooke Smith's last. The actress revealed earlier this week that she's been let go from the show after being told the writers could no longer write for her character, who'd been pursuing a relationship — the show's first lesbian relationship — with Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez).

Something tells me we still haven't heard the last of this story, which now includes a statement from series creator Shonda Rhimes that states in part:

Brooke Smith was obviously not fired for playing a lesbian. Clearly it's not an issue as we have a lesbian character on the show — Calliope Torres. Sara Ramirez is an incredible comedic and dramatic actress and we wanted to be able to play up her magic. Unfortunately, we did not find that the magic and chemistry with Brooke's character would sustain in the long run.

The ABC party line doesn't appear to be enough for Patrick Dempsey, who seemed a little skeptical of the logic on Ellen. For a show that already played with fire over the Isaiah Washington situation, this just feels like an odd move.

At least it appears Smith is getting a good storyline in her final episode, as she treats the patient who should have had the heart Izzie snatched for Denny at the end of the second season. Meanwhile, the residents compete for a chance at the first solo surgery of their class, and there's lots of tension (sexual and otherwise) between Cristina and Hunt. Say What? Dr. Hahn Takes Leave From Grey's Anatomy

Yeah, I know, we were just talking about Grey's Anatomy. But hold on tight, cause this story is crazy.

You know Erica Hahn? Hahn, Callie's confidant and lover, who came in to whip the cardiac surgery department into shape after Preston Burke's departure? Well . . . she's off the show, effective this week.

Brooke Smith told Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello that her character doesn't really get much closure — "My final scene is just me heading to my car." She said Shonda Rhimes seemed upset about the decision, almost like "some decision came down from above." She'd only gotten compliments for the work she was doing, she said.

I'll admit the Hahn/Callie storyline wasn't my favorite, but I think Smith is great and had rooted for her to join the show. This all seems rather fishy to me, somehow, though it certainly sheds new light on Grey's adding both a new bisexual character and a new heart surgeon, no?

Update: Melissa George's character, Sadie, might not be bisexual now, either.

Nothing gets me laughing like some good blooper reels from my favorite TV shows. Grey's Anatomy, in particular, has delivered some pretty good blooper reels in the past, and I always look forward to when the next season's will make its way to YouTube.

This year, ABC put out teasers of the blooper reels for a bunch of its shows, including Grey's, Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives, and Private Practice. The whole reels are on the DVD sets for the shows, but this is a pretty good taste of all the funny on-set moments that viewers don't get to see. A Salute to the TV Class of 2004-05

These days, any show that makes it all the way through its first TV season is something of a rarity. A show that succeeds long enough for five seasons is practically a miracle — especially if it's a show that also gets popular buzz, critical acclaim, and industry awards. But in 2004-05, we TV viewers somehow got lucky. That season saw the launch of several fantastic series, and these five are the cream of the crop. Together, they've been nominated for 121 Emmys, won 20 of them, and consistently appear on lists of the most-watched and/or most-loved shows on television. This year, these five shows will launch their fifth seasons, and to celebrate, here's my salute to the valedictorians of the TV class of 2004-05. Just hit "Start."

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

Baby Mama
Hurray for Baby Mama out on DVD! I really enjoyed this good-natured, fun ride when I saw it in theaters and I'm so eager to go back for more now that I can add it to my Netflix queue. The movie stars Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as total opposites who band together in order to make a baby. Basically, Fey's character is a successful woman who wants to have a baby, and Poehler is her wrong-side-of-the-tracks surrogate. Together they make a hilarious comedic team, and while the movie has its faults, it's mostly an all-around good time.

I would love to spend some behind-the-scenes time with Poehler and Fey, and thankfully the special features give me that chance! They include deleted scenes, an alternate ending, and featurettes including "From Conception to Delivery: The Making of Baby Mama" and "Saturday Night Live: Legacy of Laughter" in which Tina Fey and Amy Poehler talk about working with other SNL alums.

Shonda Rhimes Says Heigl Asked for Lighter Material

Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes said she was surprised but not insulted when Katherine Heigl made her now-infamous comments about withdrawing from the Emmy race — and the reason is pretty intriguing.

"In the back half of the season, Katherine asked me personally to write her light so that she could do her movie," Rhimes told critics during a panel for ABC showrunners at the TCA press tour. She also noted that the way Heigl's storyline with TR Knight, who plays George, played out ended up being lighter than many of Izzie's previous stories.

Rhimes said she did find it "surprising" when that news hit the press. "I actually have a really wonderful working relationship with Katherine, and I love and respect her as an actress," she said. "Izzie is one of my favorite characters."

"It was surprising, but Katie is an outspoken person," Rhimes added. "I think we all know that already."

Oh, and no, she wouldn't say anything about killing Izzie.

Well, I can't wait to ask Shonda Rhimes about this when she stops by TCA tomorrow. Frankly, I didn't think much of it when the first rumors came out that Katherine Heigl could be killed off Grey's Anatomy. But now there's a new story with more details, and it's starting to seem . . . oddly plausible. Ridiculous, but also totally plausible.

Kevin McKidd Could Journey to Grey's Anatomy

TV's journeyman has a new location in his sights: Seattle Grace. Kevin McKidd, most recently seen on NBC's Journeyman last Fall, is reportedly eyeing a long-term role on Grey's Anatomy.

According to Entertainment Weekly, McKidd would play a doctor who comes to Seattle Grace after a stint working in Iraq. While the report doesn't say the role would be permanent, it is described as a "long story arc."

I just have one request for the folks at Grey's: Could you somehow make him a Scottish doctor who happens to land in Seattle? Because, while McKidd is attractive with any accent, his natural Scots brogue is — if I may be shallow for just a moment — really, really darn hot. We could call him McScottie!

I think the Grey's ensemble has been lacking something ever since Isaiah Washington left the show, and while adding Brooke Smith as Erica Hahn helped some, it didn't completely fix the show's energy. Five Questions for Grey's Anatomy

The onset of Summer also means the return of my Five Questions series, in which I take a look back at the most recent seasons of some favorite TV shows and pose some hypothetical questions about their future. Today's questions are for Grey's Anatomy, which will start its fifth season in the Fall.

Mere and Der are together — now what? Executive producer Shonda Rhimes has said she wanted to get Meredith and Derek together (and permanently) by the fourth season finale. So, she did, with an elaborate Mere-in-a-field-with-candles stunt that could probably make even the stoniest skeptic weep. But if they're really together for good, where's the tension? The last time they were happy together, they did things like complain about snoring, and frankly, that doesn't make for very good television.
What's with Callie and Hahn? With a passionate kiss in the season four finale, Erica and Callie seemed destined to be the first same-sex couple to grace the Grey's screen. While I'm a little surprised the writers took Callie — an avowed lover of sex with men — in that direction so fast, the storyline could be a great opportunity for two characters who I think are often underused. As After Ellen pointed out, the two would be the only two lesbian or bisexual regular characters currently on network television. I'm curious to see where their relationship will go.

Does Heigl Have a Point About the Grey's Writing?

This week, Katherine Heigl once again finds herself in the center of a bit of a controversy because of something she's said about one of her roles. Some folks over at the LA Times' awards blog noticed that Heigl (last year's Emmy champ) wasn't on the list of actresses being considered for this year's awards. In response, she said:

"I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention. In addition, I did not want to potentially take away an opportunity from an actress who was given such materials."

This has struck many as a major — and inappropriate — slam against the writers of Grey's Anatomy. But does Heigl have a point? In the past, she's had some of the juiciest material the show has ever offered up (hence winning an Emmy). But she spent the fourth season mostly in the background, doing silly things like performing CPR on a deer. It's an ensemble show, and the writers have to consider the big picture rather than dealing out even storylines to each star all the time (also, the show's not called Izzie's Anatomy). But if Heigl really did get slighted with barely-there material that didn't allow her to do her best work, I guess it would feel strange to be nominated. Grey's Anatomy Rundown: Episode 16, "Freedom"

The three words uttered most often during the season finale of Grey's Anatomy were "really big trauma." They were used in reference to a teenager who was dared to lay in a vat of cement at a construction site, after which he was encased in several tons of concrete — yeah, you can say "really big trauma" again. As is often the case with Grey's, those three little words paralleled what was happening in the lives of the doctors too.

Let's start with Meredith who was continuing the brain-tumor clinical trials with Derek. Due to medical regulations, they were allowed only one more day to succeed (following a staggering 11 deaths). To discuss what happened in this situation and with all the other residents' traumas,

Tonight on ABC: Goodbye (For Now) to Grey's Anatomy and Ugly Betty

Friends, the time has come. Just when it felt like we got our Thursday night television back after the strike, it's ending again with tonight's season finales of both Grey's Anatomy and Ugly Betty.

In the case of Grey's, I'm kinda glad to see this season put out of its misery. The show tends to have really great runs of interesting story lines, but something tells me the writers' strike had a major impact (understandably) on the show getting its mojo back. I've said before that I just don't care about Derek's relationship with Rose because she's just . . . annoying. Hopefully tonight's episode will finally deliver and leave us wanting more.

Ugly Betty, on the other hand, did not skip a beat upon returning, and the show just gets better and better with each episode. Of course, the Gio-Betty-Henry love triangle is compelling. Not to mention the fact that Wilhelmina and Marc are back — along with Amanda — which adds up to a lot of laughs. Call me a sap, but I think the show continues to do a great job of unleashing outlandish plot lines and then reeling itself back in for some genuinely touching moments.

Tonight is a biggie as it looks like Henry returns with a big question to ask Betty, plus there are guest stars galore including Lindsay Lohan and Naomi Campbell. I'm very excited — nay, giddy! — for this one.

Grey's Anatomy Rundown: Episode 15, "Losing My Mind"

The second-to-last episode of Grey's Anatomy began with Meredith uttering the words "the only problem with being a resident is, you feel crazy all the time." It just happened to be the perfect setup for the rest of the episode aptly titled "Losing My Mind." Case in point, Crazy Resident No. 1: Meredith. First, she attempted to fire her therapist (most likely because last week she called her a coward). But regardless of how Meredith feels about it, she is a coward! It's annoying week after week how she covertly pines after Derek but then says things like "that's where love exists, in delusional fantasies." It's as if she's trying too hard to prove that she can't — or won't — love him.

My major problem with this episode of Grey's Anatomy can pretty much be summed up by its title: "The Becoming." All the characters still seem stuck. This whole season is supposedly about change, as the promos remind us each week. But here we are, with only two episodes and three hours of Grey's left, and we're still just in the "becoming" phase. I'm ready for some being.

Here's the No. 1 thing I learned from this episode of Grey's Anatomy: I miss Addison. On Grey's, Addison always seemed to be someone who had it together, even when we knew she didn't. She was stronger and sharper-tongued than the version of her who turned up on Private Practice, and she brought something to the Grey's dynamic that no character has been able to replicate. TV Tonight: Guest Stars Galore on ABC

ABC brought back its Thursday lineup a week ago, but it's tonight that two of the network's shows — Ugly Betty and Grey's Anatomy — are really making their presence felt. Both have great guest stars lined up to build some momentum as we roll toward the all-too-soon season finales.

First up, Ugly Betty hosts Project Runway's famously faux-hawked, famously satired fourth-season winner, Christian Siriano. The designer appears as himself, a hot new designer whom the Mode staff is trying to woo for a fashion spread — complete with designs that ProjRun fans will likely recognize from his collection. Runway judge Nina Garcia will appear as well.

But the one I'm really excited for is the return of Kate Walsh as Addison on Grey's. I thought Addie lost most of her sparkle, charm, and cojones when she moved down the West Coast to that Private Practice of hers, and I hope that her return to Seattle Grace puts her kickass side back in the spotlight. (Hey, maybe the writers will remember how to do that, and then apply it to PP when it returns in the Fall.) Oh yeah, and Elizabeth Reaser (Rebecca/Jane Doe/Ava) is back to deliver some news to Alex — but I'm too fixated on what fun Addison antics will ensue to give that much thought.

Welcome back, Seattle Grace! I'm sure the simple fact that this was a new episode of Grey's Anatomy after all that time in the great, barren strike wilderness influenced my opinion of this episode, but it was nice good to see everyone back — with their new haircuts, new relationships, and new facial hair statuses.

That said, I think the episode suffered a lot just by being the first one back. Not only did the writers have to fill in the gaps of what happened over the past six weeks, but they also had to move us — quickly! — into the stories for the rest of the season. There was a lot of setup, and a lot of reminders of things that happened before, but not a whole lot of resolution. For my thoughts, just

Look! Look at What to TiVo! You know what word isn't there? Repeat. At long last, it feels like a normal Thursday, full of my favorite comedies and soapy dramas. Welcome back, television!

Tonight really belongs to ABC, which premieres its dream-team lineup of Ugly Betty, Grey's Anatomy, and Lost for the first time. I've already checked in with Betty and the cast's awesome video podcast, and compared to the other shows, I haven't been missing Lost for quite as long. So that leaves our friends at Seattle Grace to spotlight on this night of new, new, new TV.

When things pick up, it's six weeks after we last checked in with Seattle's finest. That means Derek and Rose have been dating for six weeks, Callie and Cristina have managed to live together for a while without killing each other, and Lexie and George are now roommates in a squalid new place. This episode finds the residents competing in some sort of surgical contest judged by Bailey, while Callie forges a friendship with Erica Hahn (countdown to Cristina explosion: 3, 2, 1 . . . ).

Idle Speculation: What's Up With Grey's, Gossip Girl, Lost, and More

This is maybe the toughest part of this whole writers' strike-afflicted TV season for me: A bunch of shows are coming back, they're coming soon, and yet it's still several days (or, in some cases, a couple of weeks) before I actually get to watch. Luckily, the network press sites have been loading up with photos from the new episodes, so there's plenty of fodder for idle speculation — as you can see if you take a spin through this slideshow. If you're very spoiler-phobic, beware (though really, these are more like teasers than spoilers, since I'm mostly just guessing). But if you're willing to join me in checking out the photos and trying to figure out the plotlines (plus check out some official episode descriptions), just hit "Start."

Jennifer Weiner Brings Her Relatable Storytelling to ABC

In a smart and savvy move, ABC has struck a deal with bestselling author Jennifer Weiner to develop a television series, presumably focusing on what Weiner knows best — highly relatable women.

ABC already has many shows geared toward females like Grey's Anatomy, Samantha Who? and Desperate Housewives, and I give them kudos for thinking outside the box in their search for the next hit series. Handing over the reins to a known name like Weiner — an author who has built a career creating memorable (and often hysterically funny) characters — seems like a win for them, and for audiences (like me) who love to see a little bit of themselves in the female characters on TV. An ABC representative said of Weiner's fans: "They respond to her wry wit, embrace her smart characters and want to live in the worlds she creates."

Weiner's book In Her Shoes was adapted for the big screen in 2005 and her new book, Certain Girls (the sequel to Good in Bed) hit bookstores earlier this month. She's a hot commodity these days: in addition to her deal with ABC, two different studios are working on adapting her books Little Earthquakes and The Guy Not Taken.

Lost, Grey's Get Bonus Hours to End the Season

Lost and Grey's Anatomy are two shows that like to have not just finales, but finale events. And somehow, even in this strike-shortened year, they're still going to manage to pull off super-sized final episodes.

Lost was originally going to air a two-hour finale in May, but then the producers decided they could produce an extra hour — and, according to TV Guide, they convinced ABC that the final two hours had to air together. That meant the finale could no longer fit on the same night with the Ugly Betty and Grey's finales — so it will now air a week later, and Grey's will get to wrap up its season with a two-hour finale, too.

So: On May 15, Ugly Betty, Grey's, and Lost will all air as normal, with Lost showing the first hour of its finale. The next week, the finale of Betty will air along with the two-hour conclusion to Grey's. And then, on May 29, ABC will repeat the first hour of the Lost finale, followed by the two final hours of the show. Whew!

I'm not in love with the idea of taking a week off between the parts of the Lost finale — really, haven't we done enough waiting this season? But if that's what it takes to get more Lost, I suppose I can live with it. And Grey's always does interesting things with its big episodes, so I'm curious to see what they cook up this time. (Hopefully, no shark-jumping ferry deaths. Yeah, still bitter.)

But with Grey's returning after a several-month hiatus on April 24, Rhimes might have let something big slip to Entertainment Weekly about the future of Meredith and Derek. I'm not going to spoil it for you here — you'll just have to go read it for yourself if you want to see — but in general, I'm wondering how you feel about the star-crossed lovers of Seattle Grace. Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice Casts to Sing for Cash

Wondering how you're going to get your Shonda Rhimes fix before new episodes of Grey's Anatomy return in late April? Well, if you live in LA, and you have 85 bucks and no plans for Feb. 29, you can go see the casts of Grey's and Private Practice as they throw a singing benefit.

Yup, singing. The casts are putting on a variety show called Good Medicine to benefit crew members who were out of work during the writers' strike.

Now, some of these people have actually been paid to sing before — and they're even quite good at it. Sara Ramirez and Audra McDonald have five Tony Awards between them, Taye Diggs was an original cast member in the stage version of Rent, and Chandra Wilson has been a Broadway star, too. As for the rest of them, well, I guess we'll find out in a couple of weeks. Can you imagine TR Knight singing? Kate Walsh? McSteamy? Which cast members would you most like to hear belt one out?

The Great Debaters Wins Big at NAACP Image Awards

The Golden Globe-nominated drama The Great Debaters won big Thursday night at the 39th NAACP Image Awards. The NAACP, which uses the annual Image Awards to honor outstanding achievements and performances by people of color and individuals and groups who work to promote social justice, recognized the film with four awards, including Best Motion Picture, Best Actor for Denzel Washington, and Best Actress for Jurnee Smollett.

Talk To Me also nabbed a couple of awards, including one for director Kasi Lemmons. On the television side, Grey's Anatomy won for Best Drama, while Tyler Perry's House of Payne won three awards, including Best Comedy. Alicia Keys won four awards in the music categories, and American Idol alum Jordin Sparks took home the award for Best New Artist.

ABC Plans to Keep Both Lost and Grey's on Thursdays

Does ABC's regular Thursday lineup need some cheering up? Pretty soon, the night won't just be Ugly and Grey — it'll be Lost, too.

That's right: According to TV Guide, Lost, which has been airing in the normal Grey's Anatomy time slot, will move to the 10 p.m. slot after Grey's starting whenever both shows have new episodes to air — probably sometime in late April. Ugly Betty will reclaim its 8 p.m. slot when its new episodes are done.

On the one hand, that's great news for someone like me who's a fan of all three shows, and it's nice that ABC's putting something good in the post-Grey's slot again. On the other hand . . . dang, that's a lot of TV for one night. Besides, I'm really enjoying having Lost on at an earlier time. Call me an old woman, but I like my sleep, and Lost is the kind of show I could stay up dissecting way past my bedtime.

More Buzzworthy Valentines: McSteamy Greetings from ABC

In case the Law & Order: SVU valentines I told you about aren't your style, there's a new entry in the pop-culture Valentine's Day market. ABC just put out some funny e-mail valentines that let Ugly Betty, Grey's Anatomy, and Lost do the romancing.

Seriously, "You're not like the others"? How great is that?

The Ugly Betty ones are a little disappointing (other than the one with a drawing of Henry Grubstick's melting heart — that one's pretty genius), but the Lost batch makes up for it, with Sayid's "Life without you is torture" and Desmond's "I see love in your future" among the best. The Grey's ones aren't bad, either — I love that the heart on Cristina's is stitched up with little cartoon sutures. But man, that Ben valentine is just going to make me giggle all day.
