Desperate Housewives Rundown Episode Eight: "City on Fire"

As the title suggests, in this episode of Desperate Housewives the town of Fairview becomes a "city on fire." It starts out with a fire at the club where the Wisteria Lane boy band Blue Odyssey is performing. Then we travel back in time to the day before and as we learn about the various storylines, did you notice that each scene in that first part of the episode begins with some kind of fire (Susan sitting by her fireplace, Katherine making crème brûlée with that torch thingy, Anne's husband striking a match, etc.)?

Anyway, we get further proof that Dave's a sicko, Julie returns to Wisteria Lane for a visit with Susan and the plot thickens in Porter Scavo's dramatic love life. To chat about it all,

Lily Tomlin! Frances Conroy! Hooray for some great new blood on Desperate Housewives! Overall I think this week's episode is better than the others have been thus far this season, but in particular, it's so awesome to see these new ladies reinvigorating the show. Tomlin plays Mrs. McCluskey's saucy, smart-talking sister while Frances Conroy (known to Six Feet Under fans as Ruth Fisher) is a massage client of Carlos's who has a very, ah, "special" relationship with him.

Here's what I liked best about this week's episode of Desperate Housewives: the faceoff between fellow housewives Gaby and Susan! It's good to shake things up a bit and have the housewives literally at each other's throats. I do think that if that fight were real, Gaby would win for sure. Low center of gravity and all that. Anyway, the theme of the episode was obviously "bullies," and each storyline fell into the theme in one way or another.

I'm really glad we got some more Orson on this week's Desperate Housewives because otherwise I would have been pretty fed up with it. In general the writing on this show isn't exactly award-worthy, but this episode is pretty ridiculous. Also, I think I need more Katherine in my life. There were some things that made the episode worthwhile, though (including Carlos's sweet line, "We have lost nothing that matters. I've never been happier in my life."), so to chat about it all,

The fifth season of Desperate Housewives is set five years in the future, and while it's a pretty big change-up for the show, all the old DH elements are still there (sexy secrets, mysterious new neighbors, unruly kids, etc.). It's a refreshing change of pace to shuttle all the Wisteria Lane residents into the future and then gradually dole out bits and pieces of what happened during those five years. Truthfully, without this little tactic I'm not sure I'd be interested in the show anymore.

New Desperate Housewives Clips Let Us Glimpse the Future

The flash-forward technique at the end of Desperate Housewives' last season was met with some mixed reviews, though I personally found it to be a big relief. The ridiculousness of the show can sometimes get to be a tad much, and in the past I've found myself wishing that they would just get on with it. Well, on with it they went — several years in the future, in fact. And now we've got a few glimpses of this upcoming season, which begins next Sunday, Sept. 28.

In the clips after the jump, you can see how Lynette's boys have grown, and the reckless shenanigans they're now getting into (yeah, I said shenanigans!). I really do wish that woman would catch a break; even her sons are continuing to cause her grief. In the second video, we get to see Susan's new man — as she kicks him out of her bed.

Friday Funnies: Ugly Betty, Grey's Anatomy, and More

Nothing gets me laughing like some good blooper reels from my favorite TV shows. Grey's Anatomy, in particular, has delivered some pretty good blooper reels in the past, and I always look forward to when the next season's will make its way to YouTube.

This year, ABC put out teasers of the blooper reels for a bunch of its shows, including Grey's, Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives, and Private Practice. The whole reels are on the DVD sets for the shows, but this is a pretty good taste of all the funny on-set moments that viewers don't get to see. A Salute to the TV Class of 2004-05

These days, any show that makes it all the way through its first TV season is something of a rarity. A show that succeeds long enough for five seasons is practically a miracle — especially if it's a show that also gets popular buzz, critical acclaim, and industry awards. But in 2004-05, we TV viewers somehow got lucky. That season saw the launch of several fantastic series, and these five are the cream of the crop. Together, they've been nominated for 121 Emmys, won 20 of them, and consistently appear on lists of the most-watched and/or most-loved shows on television. This year, these five shows will launch their fifth seasons, and to celebrate, here's my salute to the valedictorians of the TV class of 2004-05. Just hit "Start."

The Office: Season Four
There are a handful of TV shows that I love to own and have handy for when I need a pick-me-up, and The Office is definitely one of them. Hurray for the release of season four and more of "The World’s Greatest Boss!" The season started out slow for me but got a lot better as it progressed, and Jim and Pam tentatively entering into a romance was a definite highlight.

Special features include deleted scenes, outtakes, commentary on "Did I Stutter?" and featurettes titled "The Office Convention: Writer's Block Party" and "Goodbye, Toby Music Video."

ComingSoon reports that Diablo Cody will develop a comedic movie script based on an idea that Steven Spielberg came up with, though no further plot details are available to us at the moment.
Tween alert! The Desperate Housewives kids have officially been recast, writes the Hollywood Reporter.
Autumn Reeser is one of three additions to the cast of Valentine, Inc., a show about Greek gods living among us that will air on the CW this Fall, writes Zap2it.
According to Variety, Danny DeVito will direct The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, with Morgan Freeman, Pierce Brosnan and Saoirse Ronan starring.
The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop on The World's Greatest Dad, an indie comedy in which Robin Williams will star as that great dad.

Desperate Housewives Rundown Episodes 16 & 17, "The Gun Song/Free"

Wow, that was a lot of juicy Desperate Housewives! Two hours is a ton of any show, but when it's DH, there's just so much that goes on between the revealed secrets and sentimental conversations and plot twists — phew! What a way to end the season though, eh? I enjoyed most of the two hours but those final few moments when we glimpse the future. . . wow. I loved that.

I was totally satisfied with this season finale, as it was like classic DH (drama, humor, violence, redemption, hope, etc.) with a little something new tossed in (flash-forward). Yeah, it's not totally original (hello, Lost) but I think it spiced things up a bit and definitely got people talking! To check out more about this week's DH finale,

TV Tonight: The Desperate Housewives Season Finale

OK, after seeing the sneak peeks for tonight's season finale of Desperate Housewives, I officially cannot wait for this two-hour event. Seriously. Sometimes the show can be pretty hit-or-miss, but lately it's been consistently hitting and tonight promises more of the same.

After the jump you can check out two sneak previews for tonight's finale. In one, Katherine and Bree pleasantly trade party planning ideas while calmly shooting off rounds at the firing range (it's such the perfect combo of dark and funny). In the other, Gaby helps an undercover police guy bug Ellie's room — but finds herself in a sticky situation when Ellie unexpectedly returns (the last line of that one is the best). Elsewhere in the episode, the women meet Susan's new baby (hence the photo above), Lynette is accused of child abuse and, apparently, "Susan realizes she will soon lose someone she loves."

This Mother's Day-themed episode of Desperate Housewives was overflowing with crazy drama — including the departure of one character (though we kinda knew about that one)! I gotta say, this episode made me more uncomfortable than most, between the rudeness of Mike's mother and the entire storyline involving Kayla, it was one long, squirmy evening.

This week's episode of Desperate Housewives had some funny things (Edie, referring to Orson: "It would be like having sex with PBS.") and some sad, ominous things (that quiet exchange between Katherine and Wayne, yikes) but best of all, we have Bad Kayla back in action. It's exciting to have another creepy, maniacal child on TV. Maybe her behavior is due to all the trauma she's been through — including just having a loony mom — but I bet it doesn't help things to grow up on Wisteria Lane, which is kinda chock-full of conniving women. She's like a little "desperate housewife" in training.

Kalya's storyline stood out the most to me this week, but there are other things to discuss as well, so

I admit I rolled my eyes when ABC promoted this week's Desperate Housewives by saying it would be about "the 'wow,'" but I have to give them credit: There were at least a few "wow"s on Wisteria Lane last night. Plotlines both old and new were resolved — from Rick's restaurant fire to Mike's near death — and even Dylan's story got interesting again, complete with heavy dose of ominous music.

Here's what I loved about this week's episode of Desperate Housewives: Julie finally tells Dylan what everyone's kinda thinking — just quit whining already about what happened to your dad, what your mom's big secret is, blah blah blah. I also really liked this episode because it was funny (naked Orson will probably always be hilarious to me) and super soapy (arson at Rick's?!). And I just think Gaby is the best mean girl on TV right now. She fights handicapped people!

Jennifer Weiner Brings Her Relatable Storytelling to ABC

In a smart and savvy move, ABC has struck a deal with bestselling author Jennifer Weiner to develop a television series, presumably focusing on what Weiner knows best — highly relatable women.

ABC already has many shows geared toward females like Grey's Anatomy, Samantha Who? and Desperate Housewives, and I give them kudos for thinking outside the box in their search for the next hit series. Handing over the reins to a known name like Weiner — an author who has built a career creating memorable (and often hysterically funny) characters — seems like a win for them, and for audiences (like me) who love to see a little bit of themselves in the female characters on TV. An ABC representative said of Weiner's fans: "They respond to her wry wit, embrace her smart characters and want to live in the worlds she creates."

Weiner's book In Her Shoes was adapted for the big screen in 2005 and her new book, Certain Girls (the sequel to Good in Bed) hit bookstores earlier this month. She's a hot commodity these days: in addition to her deal with ABC, two different studios are working on adapting her books Little Earthquakes and The Guy Not Taken.

Desperate Housewives Rundown Episode 11, "Sunday"

As a reprieve from all the crazy high-drama episodes (tornadoes, cancer, etc.), this week's Desperate Housewives was the perfect balance of silly fun (Bree's church-related hijinks) and seriousness (Dylan trying to find out what happened to her dad, Lynette searching for something to have faith in). There wasn't too much Edie, which is always a relief. And we're finally getting the story about Katherine and her "shady past." I was so sick of that storyline being dragged out. Oh, and Chris Carmack was in this week's episode! Remember him from The O.C.?

TV Tonight: Desperate Housewives

When we last visited with Desperate Housewives, the ladies of Wisteria Lane were working to dig themselves out from the rubble of the destructive hurricane that swept through their idyllic little town. For once, all the turmoil that usually stays hidden deep within this suburban paradise was visible on the outside, too.

There's been talk of the series jumping either forward or back at some point this season, but when the show resumes tonight, we're close to where we left off: Victor's dead, Carlos is blind, and Katherine is about to lose control of the secrets she's been keeping. The promos ABC has been airing seem to give a lot away — especially with regard to who might be involved with a "surprise wedding ceremony" — but then again, this show has so many twists and turns that it's hard to ever know what to believe.

Newsday talks to Nicollette Sheridan about her future on Wisteria Lane (caution: spoilery).
The full Lollapalooza lineup has been announced and the headliners that leaked Friday (Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, Nine Inch Nails) are confirmed, Billboard reports.
Tobey Maguire will star in the dramatic thriller Hungry Rabbit Jumps, writes Variety.
Zap2it reports that cast members from Scrubs, Cheers, and The Office will serve as "talent scouts" for this summer's Last Comic Standing.
The French comedy Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis (Welcome to the home of the Ch'tis) has surpassed Titanic to become the most successful movie in France ever, Reuters reports.

Desperate Housewives to Flash Forward — Or Possibly Back?

A lot of shows that were taken off the air during the writers' strike will be hitting the reset button when they return over the next few weeks, jumping weeks or even months ahead of where we left them. But that's nothing compared to what Desperate Housewives could be planning. According to TV Guide's sources, the show is considering flashing forward five years in this season's finale . . . and then staying there for the rest of the time the show is on.

Or, maybe they have another idea. Insiders told the same TV Guide reporter that the show might actually jump back five years, returning to a time when Mary Alice was a vital part of the Wisteria Lane gang, Lynette never had cancer, and destructive tornadoes were simply a paranoid nightmare.

They're both interesting ideas, and I think they'd make cool episodes of the show — but I'm not sure it's worth completely restructuring the entire series around a new timeline. The flash-forward scenario, especially, seems to veer a little too close to Lost territory, and the flashbacks would probably mean losing characters like Katherine (not to mention, what would happen to all the teenagers? I doubt they can just be made to look five years younger). But, I admit I would love to see more of Brenda Strong as Mary Alice, so I'd be up for watching a significant story arc set in the past, even if going back for the whole remainder of the series would be taking things a bit too far.

Who knows if these ideas have real weight behind them or if they're just crazy things the writers dreamed up while they were hoofing it on the picket lines. Regardless, it's worth asking: Would you prefer your Housewives in the past, present, or future?

Desperate Housewives Rundown Episode 10, "Welcome to Kanagawa"

It feels like it was ages ago that we left Lynette unleashing her primal scream at a nearly destroyed Wisteria Lane, and by last night I was more than ready to find out what happened with everyone on Desperate Housewives. Maybe it's the steady decrease in new episodes on TV, but I was downright giddy to watch this week's DH, and I'm glad it didn't disappoint. Then again, because there is so little by way of new TV it's possible my standards were lowered. At any rate, I was happy to see Bree, Lynette, Susan, Gaby and the rest of the gang in my living room once more.

TV Tonight: Desperate Housewives

Who survived the tornado that tore through Wisteria Lane back in December — and who (if anyone) perished? That's the big question that will be answered tonight as Desperate Housewives returns from hiatus.

Or at least it better be answered. This is the sole remaining episode the show was able to complete before the writers' strike shut down production, so whatever happens tonight will have to tide us over for a very long time. And between Katherine's secrets, Gaby's affair, Edie's blackmail, Mike's drug addiction, and all of this season's myriad other stories, there's a lot up in the air. Desperate Housewives Rundown Episode 9: "Something's Coming"

This week's episode of Desperate Housewives is a doozy. As promised, a tornado hits Wisteria Lane, forcing together odd combinations of people and generally wreaking havoc in ways that are shown via laughable animation. All the little arguments and quibbles between the characters ultimately seem quite small "in comparison to the storm." All in all, I really liked this episode, though the ending was a dreadful way to leave things for the hiatus.

TV Tonight: Desperate Housewives

Some pretty ridiculous things have happened over the past four years on Wisteria Lane, but a tornado? That's what's on tap on tonight's Desperate Housewives, when a twister touches down right in the middle of town to blow everyone's secrets wide open. (I'd apologize for the bad tornado joke, but I think we might as well get used to them before this episode begins.)

ABC's official description of the episode says the tornado "will destroy homes and lives," but Wisteria Lane's residents have been doing a pretty good job on the "lives" part already this season, what with Mike's pill addiction, Bree's faux son, Gaby's messed-up marriage and Katherine's mysterious, um, everything. Holy episode overcrowded with storylines, Batman! I started to feel dizzy with all the many things going on in this week's episode of Desperate Housewives. There was stuff about Julie dating, Andrew growing up, Bree and Orson's sex life, Mike's pill problems and Susan's trust issues with Mike, the "woman from Chicago" showing up on Adam's doorstep, Carlos and Gaby attempting to elude the cops, and Lynette's many issues with her mother. Edie and Tom even had little moments this week. Sheesh, who didn't they include?

Desperate Housewives Rundown: Episode 7, "You Can't Judge a Book By Its Cover"

It was a pretty uneventful week on Desperate Housewives: Bree and Orson debate the merits of circumcision, Lynette tries to pawn off her mother to her sisters, Susan discovers a secret about Mike, and Gaby makes trouble on Victor's yacht. Yawn. In the land of desperation, this week was anything but. Maybe that's because the two new gentlemen neighbors were noticeably absent, as was Danielle. Apparently, now that she's delivered the baby, Bree is free to parade as doting mother to her grandson, I mean, son. Yet, even though the action was at a minimum, there were some highlights.

Looks like The Office is one of the first casualties of the Hollywood writers' strike. Jenna Fischer wrote today that the show has just two new episodes left before reruns kick in. Here's a video of the writers picketing (thanks to Lindsb for posting it in The Office group):

Here are some other developments from day three of the strike:

The premiere of 24 has been officially postponed indefinitely, Fox announced today, and the rest of the network's spring lineup has been changed significantly.
Desperate Housewives will shut down production tomorrow; executive producer Marc Cherry joined Lost executive producer Damon Lindelof to talk about the strike.
Speaking of Lost, here's a scary thought: In one scenario, the show's return could be delayed until February 2009.
While viewers won't see the effects of the strike at movie theaters till 2009, there's one way films are already suffering: Stars can't promote their movies on the talk-show circuit.
Saturday Night Live will officially be a repeat this week.
On the one hand, new shows might be more vulnerable to cancellation because of the strike; on the other hand, the strike might be the reason some of them are still on the air at all.

I have to say, this week's episode of Desperate Housewives was not my favorite. I could have done without the Susan storyline altogether, but then again, when is that not the case these days? And Gaby seems to be all over the place, which is frustrating. I finally got on board for the Edie storyline, however, and am enjoying the back-and-forth power play between Edie and Carlos. Also, I love Danielle's impersonation of Bree — it's completely spot-on! Spooky.

Desperate Housewives Rundown Episode 5: "Art Isn't Easy"

Another Sunday, another juicy episode of Desperate Housewives. I am loving this season so far. This week's episode piqued our interest even more in what exactly went on "in Chicago," and featured all sorts of Wisteria Lane politics. I must say, however, that as much as I like that the two gentlemen are shaking things up on the street, that Lee is a prick. At first I thought he was just kind of snarky, but now he's reached full-blown obnoxious jerk status. I have a feeling his snide comments are going to get old. Also, because of this character I had a very difficult time seeing him as "The Nice Guy" patient on last week's episode of Scrubs.

TV Dinners: Desperate Housewives — Crab Cakes
On Sunday night's episode of Desperate Housewives, there was a very funny party scene where crab cakes played a key role in Edie discovering Carlos' affair. While BuzzSugar was a little disgusted by this scene, it actually made me want to make mini crab cakes! The crab cakes were served as delicious appetizers at Bree's baby shower, and they make a scrumptious hors d'oeuvre or first course at just about any type of party.

I have to admit, this week's episode of Desperate Housewives made me pretty uncomfortable at times. Between the dying woman frantic to rid her conscience of wrongdoings and Tom demanding Lynette feel sorry for him because he's the one who has to "be the hero" in her fight with cancer, it was a squirmy hour of TV. This week on "Desperate Housewives," the neighbors gather together for a rousing game of charades, though several of the women are there out of sheer gossipy curiosity, hoping to use the event as a way to find out more about Katherine's shady past. Aside from the guessing games, we get more Edie-Carlos-Gaby drama, Bree struggling to keep her fake pregnancy from Susan and Lynette's mother finding, uh, creative ways to get her daughter to eat.

Indeed, with a few exceptions, I thought this week's episode was nearly back to first season "DH" quality. And did anyone notice that Eva Longoria's name in the credits is now Eva Longoria Parker? Fall TV Preview: Five Cliffhangers I Can't Wait to See Resolved

I've given you the lowdown on the new shows heading to TV this fall, but, of course, a bunch of old favorites are also returning. Some of them left us in the lurch last spring, so today I'm listing off the top five cliffhangers that have me waiting eagerly for the shows to premiere.

5. "House"
One of my few problems with "House" has been that every episode is basically the same, but boy, is that about to change after the season finale that left House without a team. I already got a glimpse of what's coming at the TCA press tour, but I still can't wait to see where the old crew ends up and watch Hugh Laurie act the hell out of his character's search for new help.

4. "Desperate Housewives"
Usually when we talk about "cliffhangers," we're not being literal. But in the case of "Desperate Housewives," the term is a little too close for comfort, as we wrapped up last season with Edie's attempted suicide, among other dark matters (Lynette's cancer diagnosis, etc.) Is Edie really gone? Will she live on as Wisteria Lane's new ghost-narrator? And will the show's new neighbors bring some whimsy along with them?

In true "Desperate Housewives" fashion, the newest family to move to Wisteria Lane is dripping with mystery. Actors Nathan Fillion, Dana Delaney and Lyndsy Fonseca recently chatted with TV Guide about their family, one of two new households on the lane this year. Here's what we learned about their characters:

Katherine Mayfair, Delaney's character, used to live on Wisteria Lane with her daughter, Dylan (Fonseca), and an aunt, but she moved away 12 years ago under — you guessed it — mysterious circumstances. When she returns, she's with her new husband, Adam (Fillion), a gynecologist with an "unsavory" secret in his professional life.
A perfectionist and control freak, Katherine is a rival to Bree; apparently there will literally be a throwdown over lemon meringue pie.
Dylan was once friends with Julie Mayer, but she remembers nothing from that time, and the memory loss leads people to suspect something dark in her past; as a teenager, she's kept on a strict schedule, "almost like a dog."

"Desperate Housewives" is also the latest show to get the music video treatment from ABC, with glam scenes of the original five housewives set to the new Jennifer Lopez song "Mile in These Shoes." To watch the video, as well as a behind-the-scenes segment with some of Delaney's first scenes,

TV Casting Roundup: "Desperate," "Medium" and "Today"

"Desperate Housewives" has found its desperate house-husbands — and it's not David Beckham and Robbie Williams, as rumored (gee, who would have thought that was a lie?). The actual couple will be portrayed by Tuc Watkins and Kevin Rahm. Watkins, of "One Life to Live," will play Bob, a country boy seeking solace from the city; Rahm, of "Judging Amy," will play his partner, Lee.
Anjelica Huston will guest-star on "Medium" this season, appearing in six of the show's episodes. According to the Hollywood Reporter, she will play a character named Cynthia Keener, an investigator with an "unusual partnership" with Allison Dubois (Patricia Arquette).
"Heroes" is getting its second "Star Trek" guest star: Nichelle Nichols — aka Uhura — will play the grandmother of new hero Monica. George "Sulu" Takei played Hiro's father last season.
"The Today Show" has named its cohosts for when it expands to a fourth hour in September: Ann Curry, Natalie Morales and Hoda Kotb will host the show, while several guest hosts including Tiki Barber and Giada De Laurentiis will also chip in.

Desperate House-husbands Moving to Wisteria Lane

Nathan Fillion and Dana Delaney won't be the only new neighbors on Wisteria Lane this fall. The house formerly occupied by the Applewhites on "Desperate Housewives" will finally be getting some new owners: a gay couple.

Show creator Marc Cherry (pictured at right) told AfterElton.com that around episode 5, two gay men will be moving into the old Applewhite home, and "one of the gay men will just have a fractious, hateful relationship with Teri Hatcher." Cherry continued:

I just decided to have them move onto the street and have as many issues as any other couple. And Susan wants to be so politically correct and show how open-minded she is and she puts her foot in her mouth instantly and it goes downhill from there. I'm basing it a little bit on my relationship with my neighbors.

Cherry said he's just started writing the episodes, and he's not expected to cast the characters for another few weeks. Personally, I like the idea of shaking up Wisteria Lane even more and adding some diversity to the neighborhood again since the Applewhites were made out to be, you know, basically criminals. Which TV Show Will Announce a Musical Next?

Apparently, musical episodes of TV shows are the new black. I told you a while back that "Ugly Betty" was mulling a musical episode, and now, according to Variety, "Desperate Housewives" creator Marc Cherry is thinking about getting Wisteria Lane to sing and dance, too.
