What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue. In addition to my selections below you can also take home the fourth season of Entourage, as well as season five of One Tree Hill (you know, the one where they leap ahead in time and everyone owns a business or is a famous writer or something). Also, Morgan Spurlock's documentary Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden? is out on DVD along with another great indie film, Son of Rambow.

What Happens in Vegas
This comedy starring Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz didn't do so hot with critics when it first came out, but I found myself charmed by it, despite how staggeringly absurd it is at times.

Two opposites (Cameron Diaz, Ashton Kutcher) are forced to live together in matrimony so they can collect a large sum of money they accidentally won together in Las Vegas. Not only do the leads have a surprising amount of chemistry (well, I didn't expect any,
so. . .) but two supporting actors, the droll Lake Bell and The Daily Show's Rob Corddry, anchor the ridiculous moments with superb comic timing. All in all, it's a decent choice for your at-home enjoyment.

Special features include commentary from the director and a featurette titled "Sitting Down With Cameron and Ashton."

Box Office: Iron Man Continues to Soar

Update: As of this afternoon, What Happens in Vegas beat out Speed Racer for the No. 2 spot at the box office, Variety reports.

It will come as no surprise to the majority of movie critics who screened Speed Racer that the highly anticipated Wachowski brothers' flick had a disappointing opening weekend.

Not only did Speed Racer fail to knock Iron Man out of the top spot (the Marvel action hero brought in another $50 million over the weekend), but it's still unclear if the film can truly claim second place as What Happens in Vegas is hot on its trail in what Variety is calling a "photo finish." Vegas only earned an estimated $200,000 less than Speed Racer and both films are currently hovering around the $20 million mark.

In addition to poor reviews, another problem Speed Racer had is that it seemed to only appeal to kids, and filmmakers were shooting for a broader audience. An executive for the film told Hollywood Reporter, "What's hurting us is that the picture is playing very young." The Hollywood Reporter article also points out that if this is the case, then they'll have a hard time when even more competition heads to the theaters next weekend in the form of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.

Made of Honor fell to fourth place followed by Baby Mama to round out the top five.

What Happens in Vegas: Sometimes the Formula Works

Perhaps it's because last week's Made of Honor left me with sub-zero expectations for this genre but whatever the reason, I really liked What Happens in Vegas. Sure, it's cheesy, there's a ton of overacting and absurd coincidences, but there's also a strange charm to this movie. And while I never thought there might be real chemistry between Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz, two actors who I think have become like robots trying way too hard to impersonate human beings with their exaggerated goggle-eyes and faux indignation, there is, actually, something there between them.

These two leads are also seriously aided by an engaging, well-paced (if a little silly) plot that rarely drags, and supporting actors like Lake Bell (whose droll humor is great in small doses here, as opposed to the leading lady roles like the one she had in Over Her Dead Body) and The Daily Show's solid comedian Rob Corddry, both of whom help anchor the ridiculous moments with dashes of sarcasm and superb comic timing. It's one of those times when I just want to give the casting director a kiss for taking this project from so-so to a pretty good time. For more of my take on What Happens in Vegas,

2008 Kids' Choice Awards: And the Kids' Choices Are . . .

Big stars! Lots of slime! Silly good times had by all! It can only mean one thing: Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards were back yet again over the weekend, and I have to say, I'm impressed with the turnout. Big stars walked the orange carpet to promote big films, including Harrison Ford and Shia LaBeouf, who showed up to get the kids pumped for the return of Indiana Jones.

However, to this crowd of tweens, no one — not even Harrison — could hold a candle to the superstar bonanza that is Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers. Apparently the screams were off the hook (as the kids say) when those acts took the stage. Oh, and then there was the moment when Heidi Klum was hoisted into the air on a cable and, as Reuters put it, "had to pop balloons with spikes attached to the derriere of her jumpsuit." That's fierce.

As for the actual honorees, Cameron Diaz took home the Wannabe Award for being a role model and raising awareness about environmental issues, which is certainly a step up from her previous Kids' Choice Award for burping. To see who else the kids voted for, just

New What Happens in Vegas Trailer Is . . . Almost Kinda Funny

To be honest, I'd sort of brushed aside the Ashton Kutcher-Cameron Diaz rom-com What Happens in Vegas because from the trailer it struck me as vapid and charmless. This new trailer, however, is slightly better, I must admit. Diaz tiredly steps back into her kooky-goofball-hot-girl shoes as Joy, a woman who takes off for Las Vegas in a post-breakup getaway. There she meets Jack (Kutcher) and the two spend a wild night together that ends with their nuptials, which, of course they regret the morning after. Then, when one of them wins a jackpot using the other's quarter, as the plot description goes, the "unhappy pair try to undermine each other and get their hands on the money — falling in love along the way." Yeah.

It's not going to be thoughtful and poignant, but it also doesn't look that bad. The movie opens May 9. To check out the new trailer,

TV Tonight: Shrek the Halls

It's not even a week since Thanksgiving, but Christmas special season is well underway on ABC. The network aired the classic Charlie Brown Christmas on Tuesday, and tonight brings our first look at the newest animated holiday special, Shrek the Halls.

The whole original Shrek gang — including Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz — is around for this half-hour special, which finds Shrek struggling to get into the holiday spirit. Who would have known Shrek wasn't much for decked halls and mistletoe? Of course, Donkey, Puss in Boots and the rest of the clan will rally the silly ogre into yuletide shape before the end of the half-hour. Maybe this will turn out to be a holiday classic — but even if it's not, we can recover by watching How the Grinch Stole Christmas immediately after. (Pushing Daisies follows at 9 p.m., while Private Practice takes the night off.)

My Sister's Keeper Gets Fanninged — Twice

Well, for all of you who were none too pleased by the casting choice of Cameron Diaz in the film adaptation of My Sister's Keeper, this news may not help: Elle and Dakota Fanning have been cast to play the two sisters in the film.

Elle Fanning will play Anna, the girl who sues her parents for medical emancipation, while Dakota will take on the role of Anna's sick older sister Kate. Cameron Diaz is playing their mother. According to Variety, "The girls are younger than they were in [Jodi] Picoult's novel, but a decision was made to cast them younger because it was age-appropriate for Diaz."

Oh, Nick Cassavetes. What are you doing?!

Cameron Diaz Is a Sister's Keeper

The Facts:

Jodi Picoult's novel My Sister's Keeper is being adapted for film.
Cameron Diaz will star as "a former defense attorney who returns to the courtroom to defend herself and her husband when they are sued by their 13-year-old daughter for emancipation."
Nick Cassavetes, who directed The Notebook, will direct the project.

Ms. Diaz is one busy lady.
What with the Ashton Kutcher comedy What Happens in Vegas... and then the suspense-thriller The Box, My Sister's Keeper won't go into production for a while. Cammie's rather in demand these days, no?

The Book:
I enjoyed Picoult's Vanishing Acts, so I should probably get to reading Keeper before it comes to the big screen. Anyone read the book already? Thoughts?

Cameron Diaz Scores Role in Horror Film

The news:
Cameron Diaz will be trying her hand at a thriller, The Box.

Why I'm excited:
The movie is written and directed by Richard Kelly, who also brought us the creepy cult classic Donnie Darko.

What's it about?
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the movie is based on a Richard Matheson short story about an unhappy couple who receive a box with a mysterious button; at the push of the button, they become wealthy — but they also kill someone they don't know.

I'm a little confused:
I can't say I've ever thought of Cameron Diaz as a horror actress; she just seems so perky and giddy and happy all the time.

Odd bit of trivia:
"Button Button," the story The Box will be based on, also was adapted into an episode of "The Twilight Zone" in the '80s.

Shrek the Third: Pretty Good... For a Sequel

I'd actually expected really good things from Shrek the Third, but it turns out this is a case of the funniest bits being in the trailer. Sure, the movie succeeds in the way all Shrek movies do: there's plenty of kid humor (physical gags, farts, etc.) and adult humor (cultural references, puns galore, songs we recognize) all played out with colorful animated fairy tale characters. In this sense, Shrek the Third is perfectly satisfying as a family movie everyone can enjoy. But is it as good as the first Shrek movie was? Nah.

At the movie's start, Shrek and Fiona are filling in for the ailing king of Far, Far Away with the help of Puss in Boots, Donkey and Donkey's brood of half-donkeys/half-dragons. Shrek and Fiona find the job of running a kingdom not to their liking, so when the king reveals that there is another heir to the throne, Arthur (or Artie as the bullies at his high school know him), Shrek sets off to make Artie the new king. In the meantime, Prince Charming is still determined to be king and rallies all the fairy tale villains to help him storm the kingdom. This doesn't sit well with the princesses, however, who take matters into their own hands rather than waiting for their men to rescue them. That's not all there is to this movie, though, so

Movie Night: Good Cameron Diaz Movies

Watching Shrek the Third this week I was reminded that I have, on occasion, been truly entertained by — and sometimes impressed with — Cameron Diaz. More often she annoys me, but for this week's Movie Night I'm highlighting three movies in which I think Diaz does a great job.

Being John Malkovich
Hands down, this is my favorite role I've seen Diaz play, perhaps because she doesn't rely on her wide goofy smile or generic beauty for it. In fact, she looks so totally not like Cameron Diaz, I always forget it's her. What's more, I get the impression from watching her that she forgets herself, which is extraordinarily refreshing. In this bizarrely entertaining film, Diaz plays Lotte, the dowdy, oddball wife to Craig (John Cusack), a puppeteer who discovers a portal to John Malkovich's brain.

Cameron and Ashton Know When to Hold 'Em

It was only a matter of time, really, before goofy Cameron Diaz and goofier Ashton Kutcher got together for a romantic comedy. The two are in talks to do What Happens in Vegas, and not unlike Lucky You, I have an inkling that this will be chock full of "roll the dice and take a chance in love" puns.

Variety has a plot description:

Set in Sin City, story revolves around two people who discover they've gotten married following a night of debauchery, with one of them winning a huge jackpot after playing the other's quarter. Unhappy pair try to undermine each other and get their hands on the money -- falling in love along the way.

The article continues to say that neither actor has definitely signed a deal, so Variety may be bluffing on this one.

Shrek the Third: New Trailer and Photos

While I know everyone is all excited about Spider-Man 3 right now, I'm loving the new trailer for one of my most anticipated summer movies: Shrek the Third. I'm not usually one for sequels (and even less for multiple sequels), but this trailer for the third Shrek installment actually makes it look — dare I say? — as good or better than its predecessors.

There are more clever jokes that will probably fly over kids' heads, puns galore, and that same big-sad-eye face that Puss in Boots makes which just kills me every time. Added to the mix are girl-power princesses, Donkey's pegasus-type offspring and some awesomely hilarious actors lending their voices (included: John Krasinski, Amy Poehler, Amy Sedaris and Justin Timberlake, to name just a few).

Casino Royale
Picking up where many Bond movies left off — including a 1967 spoof of the same name — Daniel Craig reinvents Bond as we know him, creating a sort of everyman hero. Sure, he's still smart and handsome, but he's also got a temper, is often klutzy, and at times makes poor decisions. Yet this only makes you root more for the gruff British spy with a "license to kill." Eva Green makes for a refreshingly unlikely Bond girl, while Judi Dench plays the tough, witty M. The Holiday: Frothy and Fun As a Cup of Cocoa

Holiday romantic comedies are bound to be a bit cheesy. When the movie is actually called The Holiday, cheesiness is almost guaranteed. But this latest romp from director Nancy Meyers, which hits theaters tomorrow, rises to the top of its frothy, feel-good genre. The self-aware storyline centers on two women—movie-trailer producer Amanda (Cameron Diaz) and British weddings columnist Iris (Kate Winslet)—who swap houses for the holidays to get away from their less-than-satisfactory love lives. Amanda, who sleeps with her Blackberry and has just ruined another relationship with her workaholism, goes to live in Iris's quaint Surrey cottage, while Iris takes up residence at Amanda's palatial LA haunt to forget her three-year unrequited love.

In the beginning, that scenario lends itself to too many scenes of lonely women talking to themselves; the ones featuring Diaz's high-strung Amanda are nearly intolerable. But when a trio of men enter the picture—including Iris's sexy, suntanned brother Graham (Jude Law)—things get a lot more interesting, so
