TV Tonight: Privileged

Reminder! Privileged is starting its new day and time tonight at 9:00 p.m., right after Gossip Girl. There will be a repeat of this episode tomorrow night in the usual Privileged time slot, which is nice and helpful, but I for one will be watching tonight — I need my Privileged fix! After all, it's one of the things I'm most thankful for this year.

Tonight's episode has the cute title "All About Love, Actually" and includes all sorts of relationship issues — from Megan and Will's new problem of Will's job in Brazil, to Laurel and her old flame Miles (played by Michael Nouri) reconnecting, to Charlie's doubts about having Mandy move in (I knew he wasn't as psyched about that as he wanted her to believe he was!). Also, Rose is furious at Sage for telling Megan about her cheating ways and Marco gets a helper in the kitchen: Charlie's cousin, Luis.

Why I Love. . . Privileged

The CW's funny little new Fall show Privileged is back tonight with a new episode (that guest stars Lauren Conrad as herself). But will anyone be watching?

So far, at least, the answer seems to be no: The show's dropped viewers nearly every week since its premiere, with just 1.9 million people tuning into last week's episode. And that's a shame, because this underappreciated gem just might be my favorite new show of the entire Fall TV season. What do I love so much about the show, you ask? Well. . .

I love. . . the writing, first and foremost. Some lines on this show make me laugh out loud, the characters are funny and interesting, and the plotlines are entertaining without going overboard into crazyland. (They can say things like "Judgey Judgerson" without making me roll my eyes.)

I love. . . our fearless protagonist, Megan. She's smart, funny, warm and optimistic. She's like that Type-A girl who annoyed me in high school because she was always so good at everything, except Megan is endearing because she's also honest and human. For all her perfectionism, she's still a twenty-something girl who took a not-so-ideal job (as a live-in tutor to some super rich girls) as a means to an end — not unlike a lot of twenty-something girls. And despite the job being not-so-ideal, she makes the best of it with a great attitude. She's a peppy person who can also be direct about her feelings, proving that girls can be sweet without being weak or doormat-y.

Why else do I love this show? Please,

Would You Want to See a Veronica Mars Movie?

Today EW is reporting that Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas recently met with Kristen Bell to discuss the possibility of bringing Veronica Mars to the big screen. He's a very busy man these days, that Rob Thomas, and he says he'd have to wait until his new shows are off the ground before he could concentrate on a film version of VM, but he reportedly said, "as soon as I have any free time, that's my top priority." Kristen Bell seems to be on board for it, though she doesn't like to think about VM too much because, she says, "it really does make me sad." At the mention of a possible movie, she smiled and said, "We'll see." What do you think of this news? Crazy awesome, or just kinda crazy? Reaper Needs More Lady Viewers, Bret Harrison Tells Me

Right on the eve of the CW's upfronts, when we'll learn whether or not Reaper (one of my favorite new shows of the '07-'08 TV season) is getting a second season, Bret Harrison took a few minutes to chat with me about Reaper's need for more female viewers, what his first thoughts were reading the script and what we can expect from the season finale, airing Tuesday May 20.

He was totally sweet and friendly so check out what I learned from everyone's favorite bounty hunter for the devil:

Buzz: So, about that send-socks-to-the-CW campaign to save Reaper. . .

Bret Harrison: Yeah! I don’t know who started it or whatnot but I think it’s amazing and I don’t know if it’ll work, but we’ll certainly go out with a bang if it doesn’t.

Buzz: That's true! Are you feeling optimistic about the network's decision? Or do you just not know at all?

BH: I feel optimistic. I weirdly feel optimistic. There’s just been too much positive press about it, especially with these past five episodes, we’ve gone up in ratings. . . There’s been talk about how we’ve done better than some of the other shows that are getting picked up but we don’t have as strong a female demographic, and that may be one of the reasons they’re holding off.

Latest Save-a-Show Effort: Socks to Save Reaper!

There have been peanuts for Jericho, Mars bars for Veronica Mars, and footballs for Friday Night Lights. Now, Reaper is joining the ranks of floundering shows with an anxious fanbase ready to send hundreds of the same kind of item in the mail to studio executives in an effort to prove how much the show means to them. This time, it's socks, a reference to the hilarious character of Sock on the show, played by Tyler Labine.

According to the official Bret Harrison website, Krakoom, it is imperative that all Reaper fans inundate the folks at CW with professions of love for the show — via phone, email, letter, or soft foot garments. The urgency to get this effort going was spurred on by a recent LA Times article that declared Reaper's future to be "on the bubble." The show's producers and creators believe it would be "foolish" of the CW not to pick up Reaper for another season, especially since it's not like they're competing with the network's most popular series, Gossip Girl, or even with Gossip Girl's audience.

Executive producer Tom Spezialy acknowledges that it took a little while for the show to hit its stride, but now he feels that they're on a roll, and they can already envision several seasons down the line. He said the show is such "a blend of black comedy and horror — and just traditional character comedy and some legitimate drama, we hope — that's it's hard to find the tone in a language that everyone understands."

We won't know Reaper's fate until May 13 when the network announces their schedule, so in the meantime, if you're so inclined, put some socks in the mail.

Sam Raimi Readies Horror Movie-Style Reality Show

Sam Raimi, writer/director of The Evil Dead, A Simple Plan and Spider-Man 3 (among other stuff), is a busy guy. In addition to directing a horror flick (Drag Me to Hell) and creating an action/fantasy TV series (Wizard's First Rule), he's decided that the world also needs another reality TV show. A reality show that's kind of like Fear Factor, but shot like a horror movie. Or something.

Airing on the CW, the eight-episode summertime series titled simply 13 will "utilize horror-themed challenges to knock players off one by one, until just one is left, having survived all that bloodshed." Reality show producer Jay Bienstock will executive produce alongside Raimi.

According to Bienstock, "We want to cast it like a horror movie, and shoot it a little differently as well. Think about those old movies — we want to put people in a place like that, where they have to deal with their fears and anxieties. They'll end up surprising one another."

As casting begins for the 13 contestants, producers are also deciding in "which classic horror setting" the show will be placed: "An evil small town? A lakeside retreat with a creepy secret? An abandoned cabin in the forest?"

Rewind: This Week's Buzz

If you missed Amy Poehler's impression of Project Runway's Christian on SNL I highly recommend kicking your weekend off with this clip.
ER has been around since 1994 and might be back for yet another season — and they're even courting older stars to return. The '90s are hot right now as the big news out of the CW is that they're looking at a spin-off of Beverly Hills 90210. Any characters from that hit show you'd like to see again?
Check out the trailers for two cool action thriller trailers out right now: The Incredible Hulk starring Edward Norton and Righteous Kill starring super acting duo Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino. Norton also made news this week with talk about developing an Obama documentary.
There was a lot of scary movie remake news this week that struck me as mostly odd, involving more Michael Bay projects and tomatoes that kill.
What do you think of the new Breeders song? And did you hear? You'll be able to get the new REM album on Facebook!
Some things don't need a part two — I'm looking at you, Lost Boys 2. However, somethings should be recast (just for fun!). What actors do you think could fill the big shoes of the characters in Jerry Maguire?
Whether or not you thought letting Idol contestants sing the Beatles was blasphemous, America loved it, and next week the top 11 will be singing more from that songbook. Let's hope Kristy Lee Cook leaves the fiddles out this time.

TV Tonight: Reaper Returns!

My love for this show knows no bounds. I am so totally excited that it's back on TV again tonight, but in case you didn't get into Reaper when it started last fall or if you've forgotten what's going on, allow me to fill you in:

The show revolves around Sam (Bret Harrison), a bounty hunter for the Devil (the absurdly funny Ray Wise). He spends his time working at the Work Bench and capturing souls that have escaped from hell. He sends them back down below by handing them over to a DMV employee named Gladys.
Sam's coworkers and friends, Sock (Tyler Labine) and Ben (Rick Gonzalez) help him with the capturing. Really, the adorable/funny relationship between the three boys is my favorite part of the show. That and pretty much everything Sock says.
Sam has an undying crush on girl-next-door Andi (Missy Peregrym), but Andi isn't ready to date Sam just yet. So, Sam has found another girl, Cady (Jessica Stroup). Here's the catch: She may or may not be the Devil's daughter.

Now, tune in tonight to the CW at 9:00 p.m. for a new episode, "Hungry for Fame," in which Jamie Kennedy guest stars as a musician trying to sell his soul to the Devil in order to become a rock star. Love. This. Show. To check out a clip from tonight's episode,

CW to Make Another Show About Filthy Rich Girls

After less than a year of following the exploits of rich teens on the Upper East Side with Gossip Girl, the CW is setting its sights on another book-to-TV adaptation, this time centering on rich teenagers in Palm Beach, Florida.

The new show will be based on Zoey Dean's young adult novel (published by Gossip Girl's same house, Alloy Entertainment) How to Teach Filthy Rich Girls, which sounds as though it starts off like The Devil Wears Prada and ends up like The Nanny Diaries — but set in Palm Beach.

According to Variety, Pushing Daisies writer and producer Rina Mimoun will write the pilot episode. The story follows "a young woman who's fired from her job as the assistant at a glossy tabloid mag. She's then hired to serve as a live-in tutor and life coach for the teen granddaughters of a cosmetics magnate. Show's lead must win over the girls while also navigating Palm Beach's high society and dealing with her own personal issues."

While this story has a not-so-wealthy protagonist, there still seems to be something endlessly fascinating about rich kids. What do you think about this project? Is it intriguing or more of the same?

Reaper Rundown: Episode 10, "Cash Out"

I can't believe this week's episode of Reaper was our last for a while! I'm not sure what I'll do without my weekly fix of the adorable Sam, sweet dimply Ben, and sarcastic Sock. Most of all, of course, I'll miss the overly tan wisecracking Devil. This show's like candy. Like Red Hots. I'll miss you, Reaper!

For now, some of my favorite things from this week's episode, in which the boys had some moral questions to deal with, in addition to the normal capturing-escaped-souls thing:

I love that they succeeded in trapping one of the souls in the vessel early on in the episode. The formula of getting the vessel, researching the soul, and finally capturing the soul in the final 10 minutes can wear thin. I like that they mix it up sometimes.
Sock calls Katie, possibly the Devil's daughter, "Beezlebabe."
Ben and Sock come up dancing next to Sam and Katie. "We were doing our recon work," Ben later explains to Andi.

Reaper Rundown: Episode 9, "Ashes to Ashes"

Okay, on this week's episode of Reaper, I found the escaped soul's tactics for revenge to be truly gross. All those cremated remains flying around gave me a bit of a sick feeling in the tummy. However, I love that the Devil had a romantic interest and I super-love that Sam now has a romantic interest that isn't Andi. She needs to figure out her stuff before messing with Sam's heart. My favorite aspects of this week's show, though, are the moments with Ben and his powerful grandmother (who has "The Eye"!).

Reaper Rundown: Episode 8, "The Cop"

This week's episode of Reaper provides us with an inside look at the life of the demon Gladys, who works at the DMV, a.k.a. the portal to hell. As Ben points out, all demons were once angels, and by the end of this week's episode, Sock has a newfound softness for the hell worker. In other news, the Devil's fancy gift to Sam turns out to have another purpose as Sam hunts down an escaped soul who can — awesomely, in my opinion — pull weapons from the tattoos on his body. Finally, on the love front, Andi's guy Greg is kind of a jerk and she continues to resist a romance with Sam lest it ruin their friendship.

Check out some of the quotes and moments I enjoyed most this week:

Sock, in regard to Gladys shopping at the Work Bench like any other person: "My brain is itchy."

Five Songs by The Virgins to Be Featured on Gossip Girl Tonight

Music Supervisor Alexandra Patsavas is trucking right along on her crusade to bring cool music to the TV-watching masses. Tonight's episode of Gossip Girl, titled "Seventeen Candles" on account of Blair's seventeenth birthday, will feature five songs by New York band The Virgins. That's a good number of songs by the same band to be played in one episode! These dudes will probably be household names in little time.

Until tonight you can download the song "Love Is Colder Than Death" and I would definitely recommend doing so. The song has a boppy, '80s-style thing going on that I'm really digging. So, well played, Patsavas: Now I'm going to have to buy their EP! Reaper Rundown: Episode 7, "Love, Bullets and Blacktop"

Just when I think Reaper is getting a little too ridiculously formulaic (get the vessel, hunt down escaped souls, Sam/Andi drama, funny quips from Sock and the Devil), there are little touches that surprise and delight me all over again. I think Andi's "Ted-Free Zone" is the coolest thing I've seen in a while, for example. And the introduction of both Russ the sketchy coworker and Taylor the possible love interest for Sam really helped to spice things up this week, too.

Check out some of the things I liked best about this week's episode below:

Sock announces that they are "getting Sam laid" tonight. Or, as he also puts it, "We are planting your flag at Iwo Jima tonight my friend."
Okay, I had to rewind the part at the bar when Sock appears to fire off pelvic bullets across the table first at Sam's and then one at Ben. So great!

Reaper Rundown: Episode 6, "Leon"

This week's episode of Reaper was as sweet and fun as free Halloween candy. I just love this show! And it is, of course, most appropriate the week of Halloween. I love that the Devil hates Halloween because it's the one day of the year when nobody fears him. "I become a party gag. A plastic mask!" So, he lets Hell take a holiday on Halloween. This show is so clever. I love it.

This week's episode featured Patton Oswalt playing Leon, an escaped soul who has been working through his issues in therapy and may be a reformed evildoer. Check out the things I loved best about this episode below:

Sam: "We can see your wall of insanity, okay? We know what you're planning."
Leon: "No, no, that's my Thought Board. My therapist told me to make it."
Sam: "This is going to sound weird, but are you okay?"
Devil: "Holidays always depress me." He goes on to gloomily explain that Halloween has become "the commercialization of evil."

Reaper Rundown: Episode 5, "What About Blob"

As it gets closer and closer to Halloween, I find Reaper to be more and more satisfying — especially when it features blob people, like this week's episode does! I do wish there had been more Ray Wise wisecracks this week, and I'm starting to grow weary of the Sam-Andi drama, but there were definitely some moments that made me laugh out loud, as always:

Sam suggests the demon come out to karaoke, and that he could be the demon's wingman. "Not to suggest you need any help. You're a very attractive demon."
Sock holds Sam's hand while walking through the parking lot so Sam doesn't slip and fall. So cute!

On this week's Reaper, I got a huge kick out of Ben's deep affection for the vessel, a bird he names Winston. I'm glad that guy's getting more screen time — he's funny and those dimples just get me. This week the Devil got more great lines than usual, too, and that might be my favorite thing about the show. Could have done without the whole Sam-needing-the-contract thing, which just seems like a time-waster, but overall I think it was a great episode. "Reaper" Rundown: Episode 3, "All Mine"

Truth be told, I probably should have tried to find someone else to cover "Reaper" this week. Looking at squirmy bugs — especially ones wriggling around on Sam's toothbrush — makes me extremely queasy. Thankfully, there was enough other good stuff this week to keep me watching, and it was definitely an improvement over last week's episode. I love that there is this new guy in Andi's life, setting up a possible love triangle for the future. And, as always, Sock is my favorite part of this show.

"Reaper" Rundown: Episode 2, "Charged"

This week's "Reaper" suffered from the same affliction that plagued this week's episode of "Chuck": a disappointing second episode after a really great pilot. It wasn't totally awful — Sock provided his hilarious one-liners like a champ, for example — but the parts with Sam and his family seriously dragged. I'd like much more Ray Wise making devilish quips and less family drama, please.

TV Tonight: "Aliens in America"

As far as this fall's new shows go, the CW's "Aliens in America" scored pretty high with TV bloggers who saw the pilot episode. I myself found a lot to love about the show, most notably the two main boys, Justin (Dan Byrd) and Raja (Adhir Kalyan). The story follows a Pakistani exchange student, Raja, who goes to live with an "all-American" small-town Minnesota family. The mother in the family (Amy Pietz) has a lot of reservations about this arrangement, including the fear that Raja may be a terrorist. But Justin soon finds a friend in Raja, someone who listens to him without judging.

There are some hilarious moments in this pilot episode and some clever writing overall. Yet there are also moments that make me squirm, and not in the funny-awkward "The Office" kind of way.

I actually watched the pilot episode twice, since the part of Justin's father was recast with Scott Patterson (yes, Luke from "Gilmore Girls"!) and I actually liked the show a lot more the second time around. "Reaper": Episode 1, "Pilot"

"I'm not a carjacker, Sam. I'm the devil!"

I could watch that "Reaper" clip of Ray Wise good-naturedly reassuring the character of Sam that no, no, he's not out to jack his car (though he would "if it were an Escalade!"). He's just the devil incarnate! Having already watched the pilot a few times, that scene never fails to make me chuckle.

Then again, most of this show makes me chuckle. Whether it's the writing, the acting, Kevin Smith's direction of the pilot or a magical combination of all these things, it totally worked — I'm hooked on this story of Sam the 21-year-old whose parents sold his soul to the devil. As I mentioned before, this premise seemed ridiculously stupid on paper (a bounty hunter for the devil who sucks up lost souls with a Dirt Devil?!), but in execution it somehow works really well.

"Gossip Girl" to Feature Cool Pop Music

I seriously admire Alexandra Patsavas, the clever mind behind musical placement in hit shows "The OC" and "Grey's Anatomy." She's credited with launching the careers of many an indie band by using them on "The OC," and I've often felt that the music on "Grey's" is just the thing to seal in the poignancy of a scene.

Now, Patsavas is taking her gift for placing music to the CW's fall series "Gossip Girl," and this time, she's planning to do for pop music "what 'The OC' did for indie rock." Billboard has more:

As with "The OC" and "Grey's Anatomy," and other shows on the CW, music will feature heavily into the lives and plot lines of the main characters. The pilot episode of "Gossip Girl" spotlights music by Rihanna, the Mooney Suzuki, Hanson, Amy Winehouse, Angels & Airwaves and others.

"I'm relying on old favorites while exploring current pop music," Patsavas says. "And since the show revolves primarily around high school students in New York, we'll definitely be using some New York-based bands. But these kids listen to the radio, too," she adds. "So, there will be that music, too."

I've already called it with KT Tunstall's single "Hold On" which sounds like something that could easily fit into a "Gossip Girl" episode — I'm thinking by the third episode or so we'll have heard it. I have complete trust in this lady's skills, so I can't wait to see what she does for the music in "Gossip Girl"'s first season.

Got Questions for CW, Fox or ABC Stars?

I'm headed back to LA today for the final three presentations on the TCA press tour. The new CW shows take center stage today, and I'm sure we'll also hear lots of questions about the cancellation of "Veronica Mars." Then, on Sunday and Monday, Fox's shows — the new ones plus favorites including "House" and "So You Think You Can Dance" — are in the spotlight. Finally, on Tuesday and Wednesday, we'll be hearing from ABC, including much-buzzed-about new shows like "Private Practice" and "Dirty Sexy Money."

So I'm turning to you again to see what I should ask. What would you like to know from the stars, writers and producers? Which new series interest you most at this point? I'll be updating with TCA goodies today and throughout the weekend, so be sure to check back!

Pilot Watch: "Reaper"

What's it about? A young man named Sam learns on his 21st birthday that his parents sold his soul to the devil. Thus, he becomes a bounty hunter for Satan, tasked with collecting evil souls that have escaped from hell.

Who's in it? Bret Harrison, Tyler Labine, Ray Wise, Missy Peregrym, Rick Gonzalez

The good: Astoundingly, this implausible and ridiculous storyline somehow comes across as... realistic. Perhaps because of Kevin Smith's influence on the pilot episode, they successfully manage to commit wholeheartedly to this setup and seriously explore the problems a 21-year-old would encounter in this situation without taking it so seriously that it becomes absurd. The actors are fantastic; the interplay between the two main friends played by Bret Harrison and Tyler Labine is especially gratifying, reminding me in many ways of the guy friendships in a Kevin Smith film. Maybe I went into it with low expectations (I mean, really, look at the plot description), but the show definitely made me laugh out loud many times.

The bad: This show requires some serious suspension of disbelief. For example, why can't the devil just grab these souls himself? Also, Sam's task is actually a positive thing: he's ridding the world of evildoers. So, it kinda seems like belonging to the devil is pretty cool. Finally, there's the recent news that the girl playing Sam's crush, his co-worker Andi, has been recast. Now she's being played by Missy Peregrym who seriously annoyed me in "Heroes." In the pilot episode, I really rooted for those two characters, so I just hope Peregrym can do the role justice.

Will I watch? Absolutely. I did a complete 180-degree turn with this show, assuming it would be the biggest joke on the CW's new fall lineup (and that's saying a lot). Now, though, I'm in awe of how well they were able to pull off a premise that seems so outrageous. Also, I'd like to see Sam get with his work crush. The whole thing has just the right ratio of silliness to sincerity for my tastes.

Ah, "Gilmore Girls." You have served us well! The series finale this week included all our favorite things: crazy townspeople antics, Rory-Loralei speed-talking conversations and some Loralei-Luke excitement. It's sort of like they've been honing their hearstring-pulling ways for seven years, just to make this final episode. When Rory says to Loralei "Mom, you've given me everything I need," was there a dry eye in the house? I think not. To relive some of last night's bittersweet moments,

"America's Next Top Model" Gets Political?

For the first photo shoot challenge on this new "cycle" of "America's Next Top Model," the women had to pose for photos that convey a political stance. It reminds me of something Molly Shannon's Mary-Catherine character on "SNL" might do: "My thoughts on this issue would be best expressed in a highly stylized fashion shoot."

The difference, of course, is that the people at "ANTM" aren't joking. What's more, the models didn't even get to pick their issues; Jay Manuel assigned each girl a political view, including such polarizing topics as gun control, the death penalty, and gay marriage. As with the trend in Halloween costumes (slutty nurse!), the resulting get-ups turn serious issues into bizarrely sexual outfits. For more ranting and a gallery of the photos,
