First Look: Brothers and Sisters Season Three

Last Spring, we did some talking 'round here about the Justin and Rebecca situation on Brothers and Sisters, and it looks like those of us who were a little uneasy seeing the two of them together will have lots of chances to get used to it in the coming season. From the looks of things in this ABC promo, the two are definitely more than just ex-brother-and-sister when the show's third season premieres Sept. 28.

Of course, we know promos can be misleading, so take what you see in this one with a grain of salt. But in general, things appear to be mostly the same as ever for the Walker clan. And I'm not saying that's a bad thing, because for this huge and dysfunctional family, that means a lot of fights, awkward family dinners, occasional romantic interludes, and a whole lot of lies that always come out in the worst possible ways. "Certain members of this family are keeping all kinds of secrets," Calista Flockhart's Kitty exclaims in the promo — and I wouldn't want it any other way.

I'm excited for this soapy show to be a fun diversion on my viewing schedule again. What about you? To check out the promo, just

Brothers and Sisters Post-Off: The Justin and Rebecca Situation

There's no denying that Brothers and Sisters' Justin and Rebecca would make a cute couple — except for that thing where they're, well, brother and sister. Or are they? B and S has spent much of this Spring wading into issues of questionable paternity, sexual tension, and generally icky situations between the youngest Walker and the girl we've always thought was his half-sister. And now, after a couple of episodes where the Justin/Rebecca tension hit an all-time high, I'm wondering how you're all feeling. I don't want to get too spoiler-y up here, so to see my take and add your thoughts in the comments, just

TV Tonight: Brothers & Sisters

Brothers & Sisters hasn't been gone as long as some of the other shows that went off the air during the strike — we spoiled fans of the Walker family got to see an original episode in February, after all. But when the show went off the air, it seemed like a lot of big things were about to happen, so I'm frankly relieved that it's finally returning.

While I'm excited about many of the upcoming developments in the B&S universe, I'm a little worried about others — particularly the dynamic the writers have been setting up with Rebecca and Justin, though they recently assured E! that the resolution will be better than viewers imagine. (For some reason, I have shades of Shonda Rhimes promising Grey's Anatomy viewers that she wasn't following the rules of TV right before bringing Meredith back from the dead — once bitten, twice shy?)

On the other hand, I've been loving most of the other Walker siblings' stories — especially the ever-lovable Kevin and his dating issues. (There are plenty of juicy spoilers out there about where his story might be going, and while I won't mention them here, well, go here and scroll down.) Plus, watching matriarch Nora Walker wade into romance again has been a great argument for showcasing interesting, complex middle-aged characters in primetime. That sounds like it will continue tonight, as Nora reacts to a life-altering offer from Isaac.

Idle Speculation: What's Up With Grey's, Gossip Girl, Lost, and More

This is maybe the toughest part of this whole writers' strike-afflicted TV season for me: A bunch of shows are coming back, they're coming soon, and yet it's still several days (or, in some cases, a couple of weeks) before I actually get to watch. Luckily, the network press sites have been loading up with photos from the new episodes, so there's plenty of fodder for idle speculation — as you can see if you take a spin through this slideshow. If you're very spoiler-phobic, beware (though really, these are more like teasers than spoilers, since I'm mostly just guessing). But if you're willing to join me in checking out the photos and trying to figure out the plotlines (plus check out some official episode descriptions), just hit "Start."

What Are You Most Excited to Watch on TV Tonight?

For one of the first times since the writers' strike began, I'm actually having trouble deciding what to watch on TV tonight. NBC has the season finale of American Gladiators and the premiere of the Knight Rider movie (and possible series), while ABC has the final pre-strike episode of Brothers and Sisters. Meanwhile, CBS has the premiere of its cleaned-up version of Dexter, and Fox has new episodes of all of its animated shows. That's in addition to regular goodies like The L Word and The Wire. What Are You Most Excited to Watch on TV Tonight?

Dexter on CBS — I've been wanting to watch it forever.

Brothers and Sisters on ABC — I'm so glad it's new.

Knight Rider on NBC — I loved it before, and maybe I'll love it again.

Animated shows on Fox — I can't go wrong with a classic.

HBO or Showtime — I love Sundays with The L Word or The Wire.

Is TV Too Youth-Obsessed?

One of ousted Brothers & Sisters creator Jon Robin Baitz's recent complaints focused on his show focusing more and more on the younger characters and less and less on the middle-aged folks like Sally Field's Nora Walker and Ron Rifkin's Saul. He wrote that the storylines were being driven "younger and younger, whiter and whiter, and with less and less reflection of the real America."I see his point with B&S, as this season has spent a lot of time with Justin, Rebecca, and Lena. But, on the other hand, the adults on Gossip Girl have gotten more interesting, and the middle-aged characters on shows such as Friday Night Lights and even Dirty Sexy Money are often the best parts of the show. Brothers & Sisters Creator Writes About His Ouster

After months of behind-the-scenes turmoil on Brothers & Sisters, creator Jon Robin Baitz was recently removed from his day-to-day duties on the show. Now, in a two-part essay for the Huffington Post, he's written eloquently — but bitterly — about how he and ABC disagreed on the direction the show should take.

It's pretty fascinating reading (but long, so be warned — here's a link to part one and another to part two). Baitz takes shots at ABC executives, TV journalists, and Hollywood itself in the essays, saying he wanted B&S to focus on people in middle age and take on issues of race, sexuality, and politics, but that's not how things worked out. Here are some of the excerpts that stood out to me:

On watching B&S from the sidelines: "I can no longer argue for tone and can only watch as the demographic demands that have turned America into an ageist and youth-obsessed nation drives the storylines younger and younger, whiter and whiter, and with less and less reflection of the real America, which is made up, to the sorrow of the research departments, of people over 35 years of age and of many ethnicities and incomes."

TV Tonight: Brothers & Sisters

Is it just me, or have there been a lot of weddings on TV this fall? Wilhelmina on Ugly Betty, Karen on Dirty Sexy Money, and, soon, Robert and Kitty on Brothers & Sisters.
