Adam Brody, J.K. Simmons Join Jennifer's Body

Former O.C. nerd-hunk Adam Brody and Juno's dad J.K. Simmons have joined the cast of Diablo Cody's horror-comedy Jennifer's Body. They round out a cast that already included Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried. The Hollywood Reporter has more:

Cody's script centers on Jennifer (Fox), a cheerleader possessed by a demon who starts feeding off the boys in a Minnesota farming town. Her bookish best friend (Seyfried) must take drastic measures to protect the town.

Brody will play Nikolai, a hot lead singer of an up-and-coming rock band with a penchant for evil. Simmons will play Mr. Wroblewski, a high school science teacher.

Nice — I hope this means we get to watch Brody rock out onstage. I bet he'd be good at that. I'm so curious to see how Cody's follow-up project to Juno shapes up.

Sundance Review: Death in Love

Ugh. Where to begin with the list of atrocities the Sundance film Death in Love manages to accomplish? Preposterously wooden dialog? Check. Gratuitously violent sexuality? Check. Quick cuts to the grotesque torturing and dismembering of concentration camp detainees meant to "shock" the audience? Check. A collection of gratingly obnoxious characters, none of whom gives us any reason whatsoever to sympathize with them? Check, check, check.

This film may as well be titled Psychopathic Murderers, Mating. About a third of the way into the movie I was mentally pleading for it to have something — anything — redeeming about it. Then the sole redeeming factor entered the film, and that factor's name is Adam Brody. And sure, I like him well enough, but when Adam Brody is the one thing about a movie that doesn't entirely make you want to vomit, it's a bad sign. It's time to walk away.

The movie starts and ends with shrill, anguished screaming. Not just a few shrieks but the kind of prolonged screaming that makes you want to kill someone, just to make it stop. There's then a way-too-long montage set to music that alternates between images of various women having sex with a man and these same women's bodies being ripped apart or otherwise mangled in experiments. Awesome, right? Yeah,

Who's Auditioning for the Justice League Movie?

Yup, Adam Brody, a.k.a. little indie Seth Cohen of The O.C. is trying out for a role in the Justice League movie. He's up against a slew of other young actors, as well as rapper Common who, in my humble opinion, would make a gorgeous addition to the cast.

What are the roles that need to be filled?
Director George Miller is looking for people to play Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Flash, Aquaman, Green Lantern and the Martian Manhunter.

Who else is auditioning?
A good chunk of the Friday Night Lights cast (Minka Kelly, Adrianne Palicki, Scott Porter) is in the running, along with Joseph Cross (Running With Scissors), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Grindhouse), Michael Angarano (Sky High), Teresa Palmer (December Boys) and Max Thieriot (Jumper). The hopefuls are all on the young side because Miller is reportedly "looking for actors to grow into their roles over the course of several movies." So, which young actors do you think should play these superhero parts?

Rolling Stone reports that the White Stripes have canceled their fall tour on account of Meg's "acute anxiety."
According to the BBC, Ang Lee has cut out 30 minutes of his sexy espionage thriller Lust, Caution for audiences in China.
Variety reports that if you have On Demand service, you can watch all of NBC's pilots for free right now.
Former "Saturday Night Live" star Chris Parnell has joined the cast of the ABC comedy "Miss/Guided," Zap2it reports.
Variety reports that Run, Fat Boy, Run is the No. 1 movie in the U.K.
Led Zepplin is reforming for one night only, at a tribute show for the late Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun, Billboard reports.
"The Closer" broke its own cable ratings record for its season finale on Monday, writes the Hollywood Reporter, drawing 9.2 million viewers.

The Ten: Absurd, But Not Absurdly Funny

I think Paul Rudd is cute and funny. I think the concept of making a movie using ten vaguely intersecting comedic skits is potentially great and funny. So why, then, is The Ten just not that funny?

The movie has Paul Rudd playing Jeff, a kind of surreal host on a sparsely furnished "stage," of sorts, introducing each of the film's stories based on the Ten Commandments. Between each segment we get an update on the travails of Jeff's love life (the end of his rocky marriage, followed by his relationship with the bouncy young Liz (Jessica Alba), etc.). The stories themselves are moderately interesting. For the commandment about stealing we do indeed find Winona Ryder playing a young woman who steals a ventriloquist dummy with whom she's fallen in love. The piece featuring Adam Brody (based on the commandment about worshiping false gods) is a pretty funny commentary on the phenomena of American celebrity. Ten stories starts to feel like an awful lot, however, and when the mildly amusing musical finale comes, it arrives in the form of silly relief. For more on my perplexed "eh" reaction to this movie,

The Results Are In: Recast Back to the Future

Every Wednesday on BuzzSugar, I post a Recast challenge, where I ask you to choose new actors for a classic TV show or movie. The reader who submits the best cast wins a BuzzSugar t-shirt!

This week's recast challenge was a fond favorite for many of you, so I was delighted to see how thoughtful the recast lists were! Some of my favorite ideas include casting Frankie Muniz or Michael Cera as Marty McFly, as both actors have that youthful earnestness.

I also enjoyed many of the suggestions submitted for the character of Doc Brown, such as Steve Buscemi, and emei47's idea of Robert Downey Jr. Finally, selecting who should play the villainous Biff Tannen seemed to be a fun challenge for some of you, and I especially liked BunGirl's pick of Owen Wilson. BunGirl also posted her own cast photo, which I thought was awesome.
However, my favorite recast list this week comes from CocoChic! She wondered if we were casting these characters as teenagers or as adults. Movie Preview: The Ten

News about The Ten first caught my eye when it screened at Sundance back in January. After that I kind of forgot about it... until yesterday when the full trailer hit the web — and the trailer is awesome.

The broad cast seriously runs the gamut, from comedic people I'm a little in love with (Paul Rudd, Rob Corddry, Ken Marino and other members of "The State") to mainstream actors (Adam Brody, Jessica Alba, Winona Ryder). The result is bizarre, but also looks like it could be really funny. Opening August 3, The Ten tells ten stories, each with the theme of one of the Ten Commandments.

This week's recast challenge was a tough one, especially when it came to casting the wise old Mr. Miyagi. I loved the idea of casting George Takei, as suggested by lem0n and sarap 007. I also liked some of the picks for the part of Ali, such as SU3's Mandy Moore and sasha9000's Ginnifer Goodwin. Movie Preview: Adam Brody, In the Land of Women

I was sort of starting to hate "The OC" by the time it went off the air, but it did leave me hoping that Adam Brody gets more work. He's probably not the world's most versatile actor, but I find his laissez-faire hipster demeanor hard to resist.

So, I'm curious about In the Land of Women, the first feature from writer and director Jon Kasdan, whose brother Jake also has a new movie, The TV Set. On paper, the premise sounds a bit Garden State: After getting dumped by a movie star, Carter Webb (Brody) decides to move to Michigan care for his grandma (Olympia Dukakis). As he straddles that vexing line between mature adult and immature 20-something, he's charmed by two women across the street, including a sassy mom (Meg Ryan) and her teenage daughter, Lucy (relative newcomer Kristen Stewart). "The OC" Returns — on Cable

Until last week, I was only vaguely aware of Soapnet, but if you're a fan of "The OC," it might be time to get the obscure cable channel on your lineup. Starting tonight,
Soapnet is adding the recently canceled teen drama to its regular programming, which includes evening rebroadcasts of traditional soaps like "All My Children" and "Day of Our Lives," as well as reruns of "Melrose Place" and Beverly Hills 90210."

"The OC" kicks off tonight with the pilot, which airs at 6 p.m. Eastern/Pacific, and continues on subsequent Mondays. When I look at photos from the first episode, I can't believe how young everyone looks, so it will be fun to go back to the beginning. This evening also marks the Soapnet premiere of "One Tree Hill." Hilariously, the channel is marketing the show pairing as "pretty people, pretty messed up." Check the web site to see if the channel is available in your area.

"The OC" Recap: Episode 16, "The End's Not Near, It's Here"

So the series finale of the "The OC" has come and gone, with an hour of television that was at once wonderful and terrible. For the first 20 minutes or so, I found myself wanting to tap the actors on the shoulders and remind them that this was, in fact, the final episode ever and could they please stop wasting time on silly trivialities, such as exposition and Taylor's blog?

Fortunately, about halfway through the episode, they seemed to get the message, delivering plenty of juicy details and referencing everything from The Graduate and "Six Feet Under" to "Deal or No Deal" and "The OC's" own demise. To find out what happened,

TV Tonight: "The OC" Series Finale

I've said it once and I'll say it again: "The OC" is officially over. Sure, the show hasn't been a ratings darling this season, but even I was shocked when Fox announced in early January that it was canceling the series for good.

Thankfully, after last week's rather lackluster post-earthquake episode, it looks like the writers have prepared the action-packed finale that this melodramatic show deserves. Time-wise, the final show picks up six months after the earthquake happens, which is kind of a cheap move but also lets us fast-forward to some juicy plot possibilities. Taylor has gone to France, the Cohens are living at the Coopers, and the previews are promising a baby and a wedding. To see a promo for tonight's episode and a clip,

"The OC" Recap: Episode 15, "The Night Moves"

Maybe it's because last week's episode of "The OC" ended in what looked to be the worst earthquake since the great San Francisco shake-up in 1906, but I was expecting something a little more earth-shattering on last night's show, "The Night Moves." (And for those of you wondering, yes, the title is a reference to the Bob Seger song of the same name. Oddly.)

"The OC" Recap: Episode 13, "The Case of the Franks"

I rushed home from the Sugar Publishing happy hour to catch last night's episode of "The OC." By the time the show ended at 10 p.m., I was feeling a little nauseated — and it wasn't from the cocktails. So just how sappy and ridiculous and flashback-filled was "The Case the Franks"? Let me just say: Had I spent the week eating only conversation hearts and clothing myself in rose petals, I don't think I could have written a more sickeningly sweet Valentine's Day episode than this one.

Taylor and Ryan are trying to decide how not to mess up the big day, when Taylor finds a mysterious address in Ryan's stuff. Turns out, it's the address of Frank Atwood, who Taylor agrees to help reconnect with Ryan. Meanwhile, Summer is troubled when a psychic says her soul mate is named George, so she goes to talk to Kirsten. Then, the episode basically becomes one giant big-hair flashback, so

"The OC" Recap: Episode 12, "The Groundhog Day"

You know a show is desperate for ideas when it's building plot lines around Groundhog Day, and that's precisely what happened on last night's episode of "The OC." Che is still in Newport and struggling with the revelation that his soul mate is a sea otter and, therefore, probably Seth. His other major concern: liberating the groundhog that is Newport's version of Punxsutawney Phil. He enlists Seth's help in freeing the critter, and thank goodness, because otherwise, we'd miss out on a number of old-fashioned Seth one-liners, which keep the episode from being a total waste.

Meanwhile, Kirsten is fretting about her health as her 40th birthday nears, and Kaitlin has been emailing Bullitt for about a month, pretending she is Julie. (Her latest message ends, "I miss your butt. Love, Julie." Classy.) To find out what happens,

"The OC" Recap: Episode 11, "The Dream Lover"

I'm really hoping the "The OC" will pull out all the stops now that the show is going off the air, and last night's over-the-top episode, "The Dream Lover," was a promising start. We've got two interlopers in Newport, including Che, who is getting weird Seth vibes, and Henri-Michel, who wants to rent a house in California and invites Taylor to move in.

Henri, after all, is willing to do anything to win his Peaches back. Taylor doesn't seem crazy about this idea but gives him credit for "really taking an emotional risk, unlike some people.” Meanwhile, Summer reassures Seth that "I still really love you. I hope we marry some day.” Soon, Seth sets off on a spiritual journey/camping trip with Che, while the rest of Newport's denizens embark on their own strange trips, so

"The O.C." Recap, Episode 10: "The French Connection"

Thursday night's episode of "The OC" focused mostly on Taylor and her French ex-husband, Henri-Michel, who makes Ryan feel threatened despite being a pretentious weenie. The episode starts as Taylor realizes that the hottest new erotic novel on the market, A Season for Peaches, is a thinly veiled account of their affair written by Herni. (Apparently, page 47 is where it gets really hot.) She begs Ryan not to read it, and he agrees — until he runs into the ex-hubby signing copies at a bookstore and breaks down.

Speaking of breakdowns, over at NewMatch, Julie is having a hard time hiding the male prostitution ring from Kirsten, who is getting suspicious. It certainly doesn't help when Kirsten overhears Julie promising a client that "this one will have his back waxed," which prompts Kirsten to steal Julie's cell phone to snoop.

Meanwhile, Seth is jetting up to Seattle to ask Dr. Roberts for Summer's hand in marriage, while Kaitlin Cooper has a romance of her own brewing, so

The O.C. Recap: Episode 8, "The Earth Girls Are Easy"

It's tough running a male prostitution ring when your business partner still thinks it's merely a dating service. That's where we find Julie in Episode 8 of "The O.C.," when both Kirsten and Bullitt offer to help her keep the books. Feeling in over her head, she and Bullitt's son, Spencer, come up with another solution: They'll burn the evidence and extract themselves from the whoring business once and for all. That is, after they clean up from their New Year's bookings.

Meanwhile, Seth is in the kitchen with Sandy, mulling over a problem of his own: He has made absolutely no plans for New Year's, and Summer isn't happy about it. So, he just decides to tag along with Ryan, who's planning to surprise Taylor with a trip to Las Vegas.
