Buzz Gift Guide: Best of 2008 For Gals

Welcome back to my Buzz Gift Guide series for all the entertainment lovers in your life. Yesterday I sifted through the stacks (er, Web pages) of music, DVDs, and books to find some of the best 2008 has to offer dudes. Today I will share with you some 2008 entertainment gift ideas for the ladies.

It's no secret how much I love Jenny Lewis and I will be spreading the gospel this year by handing out her newest album Acid Tongue to my girlfriends (or at least including her songs on the mix CDs I'll make this holiday season). I'll also be giving out Aimee Mann's newest album, as I think it's pretty awesome.

It was a good year for books: I read both The Opposite of Love by Julie Buxbaum and Certain Girls by Jennifer Weiner and would definitely recommend them. In the movies department, might I suggest the hilarious Baby Mama or Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day on DVD?

Since I watch more TV than most people I know, I use the holidays to not-so-subtly suggest to friends what I know they would love, like 30 Rock or Greek. And many of my friends have grown to love Lipstick Jungle, so it would be a treat for them to receive the show's first season on DVD.

TV Tonight: 30 Rock

What's more awkward than going to your high school reunion? Going to your high school reunion with your boss. That's what happens on tonight's 30 Rock, when Jack persuades Liz to go to her reunion — and then tags along for the ride.

It's a fairly serious episode by 30 Rock standards, which mostly just means it's depressing-funny rather than goofy-funny — all the usual little asides and one-liners are still there, and I've been using a few of them in my daily life ever since I first saw the episode last week. We get to see what Liz was like in high school, which is hilarious for a number of reasons, most of which would be too spoilery to reveal. And there's some good, meaty Jack stuff, as Don Geiss awakens from his coma to determine Jack's future with GE.

And yes, this is the episode that was supposed to have a couple of Gossip Girls as guest stars. Sadly, that never came to be — but Blake Lively's sister, Robyn Lively, does turn up as Liz's old high school nemesis (though you might not recognize her under her awful wig — she's on the right in the picture above). TV Tonight: Jennifer Aniston on 30 Rock

Jennifer Aniston's had a pretty big week, what with that Vogue cover and interview with her comments about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. It's good timing, then, that she heads to 30 Rock tonight as the latest in that show's long list of high-profile guest stars.

Aniston, back on TV for the first time since her quick appearance on Dirt, plays Claire Harper, a Fatal Attraction-esque stalker who randomly turns up in New York and takes quite a shine to Jack. Liz tries to warn Jack about Claire's freakish ways, but that doesn't stop Claire from serenading Jack with a Marilyn Monroe-style rendition of "Happy Birthday" to him (and it's not even his birthday!) and going a little crazy in his house.

Aniston's not the only guest star on tonight's episode; for some reason, the cast of Night Court is also around. Much as I love a good Markie Post sighting, though, it's Aniston whom I can't wait to see. Can the episode possibly live up to last week's Oprah-filled gem? To watch a couple of clips, just

Sunday Funnies: 30 Rock

I know I don't usually recap 30 Rock around here, but after this week's episode — which featured a guest appearance from Oprah — I figured there was no better time to talk about the show. If you haven't seen the episode yet, the whole thing's on Hulu, so treat yourself this Sunday and give it a watch. Some of my favorite moments:

The idea that Jack Donaghy's tranquilizers might lead to "sleep crime."
Liz, under the influence of said tranquilizers, whispering that she was "snitting next to Barpo."
Tracy Jordan's monster claw.
Sweater capes!
Oprah's ninth-grade boyfriend.

If none of this makes sense to you, you owe it to yourself to watch that episode now.

And then there's the moment that had me laughing so hard that I cried so hard that I literally couldn't see my TV. Out of context, it might not even be as funny, but I'm telling you, at the time, it was the most hilarious thing I'd ever seen. Jon Hamm to Meet Liz Lemon on 30 Rock

I'm trying not to get my hopes up too high, because 30 Rock already made my heart soar once this Fall and then went and smashed it into a million pieces. But! If this were to happen, it would be even more amazing than the Gossip Girl crossover: Jon Hamm is in talks to guest-star on 30 Rock as a potential love interest for Liz Lemon.

The plan, apparently, is for Hamm to be around for multiple episodes playing Liz's neighbor (and possible more-than-just-neighbor). That would put the lead actress from TV's best comedy (well, according to the Emmys, anyway) and the lead actor from TV's best drama together. On the same show! Possibly kissing!

Thanks to Saturday Night Live, we've now seen just how funny Jon Hamm can be. And combined with Tina Fey, it sounds like comedy gold to me. What do you think?

TV Tonight: 30 Rock Returns!

Jeez, it's about time 30 Rock came back. Since the NBC comedy was last on the air, it's picked up a passel of Emmys, and its creator and star, Tina Fey, has gotten wildly famous for her side job as Sarah Palin. Which is all well and good, of course — it's just been quite the wait to see the 30 Rock gang together again, doing what they do best.

In tonight's premiere episode, the first of many guest stars (Megan Mullally) drops by the set of The Girlie Show to evaluate whether Fey's Liz Lemon is a good candidate for adoption, prompting Liz to try to convince her coworkers to act normal. Good luck with that. Also, Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) returns from his brief stint in DC to resume his position at the network, putting him toe-to-toe with Devin Banks (Will Arnett), whom Fey recently revealed is based on real NBC entertainment chairman Ben Silverman.

Things really heat up next week, when Oprah makes her highly anticipated guest appearance as Liz Lemon's aisle-mate on a flight. Steve Martin, the whole cast of Night Court, and Jennifer Aniston will be by later in this season, but for tonight, I'll take any 30 Rock I can get. Weekend Reading: Representing the Peacock as a Page

Kenneth on 30 Rock might lack common sense, but he must be quite extraordinary if he's nabbed a page job at NBC. The New York Times recently profiled the page program for a story that includes interviews with current pages, famous pages (Regis Philbin, Ted Koppel), and Jack McBrayer, whose 30 Rock character is probably the best-known fictional page of all time.

Among the things I learned from the story:

The page program is 10 times as competitive as admission to Harvard.
Pages get a 75-page handbook full of NBC trivia, most of which they're supposed to memorize, and they have to pass a test at the end of orientation.
About 70 percent of pages end up with jobs at NBC by the end of the program.
Ted Koppel claims that when he was a page, he dated his way through the Rockettes.
The real NBC pages recently got snazzy gray uniforms, which means Kenneth's look might be getting an update as well.

Yee-haw! This week brings us more TV-to-DVD with two favorites headed to a home theater near you:

30 Rock: Season Two
Tina Fey has been on a roll with her frequent appearances on Saturday Night Live but come Oct. 30 she'll return to her day job, 30 Rock. Is there anything this woman can't do? I for one will be adding this DVD of the show's second season to my collection. Special features include commentary by Fey, deleted scenes, a peek at the table read for the episode titled "Cooter," and a featurette called, "The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Presents: An Evening With 30 Rock."
How I Met Your Mother: Season Three
Another adorable television comedy I would love to own (hint, hint parents). Special features include Lily and Marshall's honeymoon videos, additional scenes, behind-the-scenes footage, an unrated gag reel and, of course, music videos!

Live From the Emmy Press Room: 30 Rock

The cast of 30 Rock just popped up in the press room with a whole bevy of Emmys: one for Alec Baldwin (who is, yes, bowing down to Tina Fey in this image), two for Tina Fey, and still another one for the show as a whole.

Fey's two personal Emmys "look identical," she joked, but Alec Baldwin apparently told her that the acting award should mean that "I can stop apologizing for being an actor and being on the show. He wants me to stop apologizing the whole time!"

As for the Emmy for the show? "That one really belongs to everyone," she said, "so I don't like it as much." Ha!

There seemed to be a sort of mutual admiration society going on between Fey and Baldwin, with her crediting his acting abilities and him thanking her for coming up with the concept of the show. "The show was created by one woman," he said. "This is Tina's idea, this is Tina's thing, she is the head writer and is there every day, even the days she's not shooting as an actress. . . . The interesting thing is to me, there are a lot of good shows on the air right now. There's a lot of good comedy. I think we have the best writers, which I think says a lot right now."

It's funny, isn't it, how and when actors' personal lives begin to sabotage their professional lives? Lindsay Lohan, once a promising young talent, is in the process of rebuilding her career after issues with drugs, alcohol, and bar fights. Then there's Tom Cruise, who has been in career rehab ever since he jumped the couch. Major celebs are more than just talent, they're entire brands, and going off brand is usually career suicide — unless, of course, you're Alec Baldwin.

This guy is known to be, well, a little odd and even a loose cannon. But no matter what terrible, weird thing comes out about his private life, he's such a great addition to any cast (30 Rock is the most recent perfect example) on TV or in movies that I for one tend to ignore that other stuff. I mean, look at him. I can't even type this post without looking at his picture and cracking up.

In this way, he is totally fascinating to me. Which is why I for one will be curling up with this giant, illuminating profile on Baldwin in The New Yorker this weekend. To see some of the tidbits that got me hooked, just

30 Rock Gets Gossipy With Blake Lively, Leighton Meester

OK, yes, I know I was just talking about Gossip Girl. But forgive me for going back to the well so soon, because I can't let this day go by without telling you about the most awesome stunt casting/crossover idea I think I've ever heard: Blake Lively and Leighton Meester will guest-star on 30 Rock, playing high school classmates of Liz Lemon's in an episode where we find out Liz was actually a mean girl in high school.

No word on whether Blake and Leighton's characters will also be mean girls — or whether they'll be victims of Liz's nastiness. Either way, this just proves that 1) 30 Rock is awesome, and 2) these Gossip Girls (or their agents) are pretty savvy themselves.

But oh, the awesomeness doesn't end there. Since the episode revolves around Liz's high school reunion, we'll see adult versions of those two characters, too — and the producers are reportedly talking with Robyn Lively (yes, Blake's sister, of Teen Witch fame) about playing one of them. See? So fantastic!

So, here's a question: What actress should play the younger, meaner Liz Lemon?

TV Tonight: Scrubs and 30 Rock Sign Off for the Season

It seems like just yesterday we were getting our TV shows back, and tonight, a couple of them are leaving us already. Scrubs and 30 Rock have the first finales of this screwy May sweeps period, and both episodes look like they're not to be missed.

First off, Scrubs. It's a curious case right now, anyway, as this should have been the show's series, not season, finale. NBC didn't want to renew the show for another year, and it seemed doomed to end without a proper finale — until ABC, which produces the show, stepped in and said it wanted to air another season itself. The announcement hasn't been officially made yet, but it's expected to come at next week's upfronts. In any case, the show is bidding its farewell to the NBC Thursday night lineup with a blockbuster episode playing homage to The Princess Bride, with some sets and costumes that must have blown the show's budget for a month.

Then, on 30 Rock, Liz Lemon might be pregnant! Well, Floyd and Dennis have both been in town recently . . . Also, Jack officially leaves GE for DC, where he finds things aren't quite what they expected. I'm most excited for the guest stars in this episode, which include Edie Falco reprising her role as CC and Matthew Broderick playing a character named Cooter. It was funny just typing that.

I love these inside-jokey products — I've been known to buy a Friday Night Lights fan a Crucifictorious T-shirt and once proudly gave my West Wing-loving friend a Bartlett for President mug. TV Tonight: Earl, 30 Rock, The Office, and Scrubs, Oh My!

After a long, dark Winter, it's time to laugh again. For the first time in months, NBC's whole Thursday comedy lineup is new. That's right: The Office, Scrubs, and 30 Rock all return tonight, and I'm looking forward to nothing more than popping some popcorn and settling in for a long night with my favorite funny folks.

Between these clips and my interview with Rainn Wilson and Greg Daniels, I have a pretty good sense of how tonight's Office is going to go: Michael and Jan throw a dinner party; inappropriateness and hilarity ensue. As for the other three shows:

On Earl, a still-comatose earl continues living out his dream life with Billie and their new baby boy. Meanwhile, Randy realizes that every item he completes from Earl's list helps Earl get better, so he turns his attention to a stolen motorcycle.
On 30 Rock, we finally get a peek at Jack Donaghy's immensely successful reality show, the steamy MILF Island. Meanwhile, someone gives Page Six some nasty quotes about Jack and pressures the writers to give up the traitor.
On Scrubs, Turk decides to learn Spanish for Carla as an anniversary present, and there's some kind of caper involving Dr. Kelso's breakfast.

Ten Things I Learned from Chatting with Tina Fey

Just one week from tonight, NBC's 30 Rock will finally return with new episodes. Tina Fey did a chat with reporters earlier this week to talk about the upcoming episodes, her dream best friend, and her trademark glasses. Here are 10 things I learned:

She wants Oprah to be her best friend — on the show, and maybe in real life. "I want to spend time with Oprah," she said, "and I don’t know what I need to do to make that happen."
Both of Liz's boyfriends, Floyd and Dennis the Beeper King, are coming back for story arcs this Spring — and Liz, who "probably hooks up once every seven years," is going to have a pregnancy scare.
There was no writers' strike in the land of 30 Rock. "We decided that the strike did not happen in our world because we sort of felt like, for people viewing at home, the real strike was a big enough pain."
Unlike Fey herself, Liz Lemon will never turn up on the cover of Vanity Fair. "Liz Lemon never gets her hair done," Fey said.
That whole thing about "clapter" really wasn't supposed to slam The Daily Show. "That thing was edited kind of weird because I was really talking about audiences and how, you know, audiences respond weirdly to things. And when I was talking, I said, 'like you know, on Weekend Update or anything.' And then that kind of went away, so it seemed like I was saying something bad about those guys."

Jack McBrayer Touches Mariah Carey's Body

You know how sometimes folks who are famous for very different reasons end up doing some project together, and you can't quite imagine how they even ended up knowing each other's names, much less collaborating? That's how I'm feeling about the video for Mariah Carey's new single, "Touch My Body," featuring 30 Rock's Jack McBrayer as the object of Miss Mariah's lust.

You know how I feel about Jack, and it's hilarious to watch his Kenneth the Page-like nerdy character become Mariah's fantasy boy toy — whether he's being spanked, having a pillow fight, or even catching a frisbee in his mouth like a puppy. Only a 40-second snippet has leaked so far, but here's hoping we'll see the whole Brett Ratner-directed video soon. What's that? Yup, Ratner's involved, too. I don't know whose idea this was, but it's strangely brilliant.

Thursday Night of Reruns? Try 30 Rock

Since last night's television selection left me with little to recap, I thought I'd direct your attention to the best show that you're maybe/maybe not watching, but is the funniest thing around — 30 Rock.

Last night's episode, "Cougars," was full of great one liners ("I'm gay for Jamie" "You can't be gay for one person . . . unless you're a lady . . . and meet Ellen."), but really the whole plot line where Liz Lemon gets herself a (much) younger guy was spectacular. And hey, even with the writers' strike, it still has three episodes left to air, which is more than I can say for most shows (ahem, The Office).

Seriously, even if you've never watched the show a single time, check out the video after the jump. There is no way you won't laugh. No way at all. In fact, I dare you not to laugh. Tina Fey is amazing. And I can't help it, I love Alec Baldwin.

30 Rock's Product Placement: Brilliant or Annoying?

One of my favorite things about 30 Rock is the sly way the show savages corporate culture — from Jack Donaghy's title (Vice President of East Coast Television and Microwave Oven Programming) to the hilarious Greenzo episode that poked fun at NBC's Green is Universal initiative. But I'm conflicted about the show's increasingly blatant product placement. I initially thought the gags were hilarious — remember the scene in the "Jack-Tor" episode where the writers complained about having to do product placement, all the while plugging Snapple? — but recently, they've been grating on me.

Unsurprisingly, NBC is getting paid for those placements, even when 30 Rock makes them into over-the-top jokes. The show has had 142 product placements this season — which, interestingly, isn't nearly as many as The Office, which has had 381 product placements so far. But I don't notice the advertising as much on The Office, probably because the show doesn't intentionally draw attention to the products it's plugging as much as 30 Rock does (the episode where Dwight quits to work at Staples notwithstanding).

With more and more people skipping commercials these days, product placement is probably here to stay. But would you rather have it done in a subtle way or in a direct and over-the-top style like 30 Rock's? As annoying as it can be, I do respect the way 30 Rock makes it obvious that we're being advertised to, and it fits the tone of the show — up to a point, anyway. Where would you draw the line? TV Tonight: 30 Rock

Of all of the shows participating in NBC's Green is Universal week, I've been most excited to see what 30 Rock would do with the assignment. The show is so brilliant at poking fun of NBC's corporate culture that I figured Tina Fey would have something special up her sleeve for this politically correct mission.

Sure enough, tonight's episode will introduce Greenzo, a ridiculous, Jack Donaghy-mandated green superhero, played by David Schwimmer. Liz gets roped in to a promotional tour with Greenzo, and it doesn't take her long to get fed up with the goofy mascot's over-the-top message. Even better, the show convinced Al Gore to come poke fun at himself and his environmental mission.

The other green week comedies don't look bad, either — especially this edition of The Office, which finds Michael dropped in the woods on a wilderness-survival mission. To watch a promo for all four comedies, just

TV Tonight: "30 Rock"

"30 Rock," one of the big surprises of last year's TV season and this year's Emmy awards, returns to TV tonight. The Outstanding Comedy Series winner is hoping to make a splash with its first show since taking home the Emmy, dialing up a guest star with the power to bring in lots of new viewers: Jerry Seinfeld.

I got a chance to see tonight's episode early, and I'm happy to report the show's still got it. It's not the funniest episode of the series so far, but it has some stellar moments — including the setup for Seinfeld's appearance, which centers on a revolutionary tactic Jack has developed to insert Seinfeld into all of the network's programming. As always, one of the best parts of "30 Rock" is the humor it pokes at its own industry, and Jack's listing of his summer reality shows — "MILF Island," "Are You Stronger Than a Dog?" — hits hilariously close to home.

If you haven't seen "30 Rock" before and are curious now that it's got an Emmy, this episode wouldn't be a bad introduction. It's not perfect, but it's a great warm-up episode to ease us back into the show's screwball sensibility. To watch a preview, just

What Was the Biggest Surprise of the Emmys?

What a night! There were some expected wins, like America Ferrera winning for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy and "The Sopranos" taking home the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series. But then there were some major surprises, too. I found these things to be most startling wins of the 2007 Primetime Emmy Awards:James Spader — Seriously?! I'm slightly surprised Spader beat out Hugh Laurie, but most of all, how is it possible he beat out James Gandolfini in the final season of "The Sopranos"?Jaime Pressly — I had the toughest time figuring out who might win in this category because, between Elizabeth Perkins, Vanessa Williams and Jenna Fischer the talent was so tremendous. I just didn't think Pressly would take this one.Sally Field — Again, the competition in Field's category was very strong (Edie Falco and Kyra Sedgwick?), and this was Field's first season on a new show, so I never truly expected her to take the award.Ricky Gervais — Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for Gervais because I think he's a genius, but I didn't realize the voters would really choose him, considering some of the mainstream hits that Gervais was up against (Sheen of "Two and a Half Men" and the previous voters' favorite Tony Shalhoub)."30 Rock" — Wow, did I not see this coming at all! In the weeks leading up to the 2007 Primetime Emmy Awards, I'll be looking at the nominees in some major categories and trying to predict who's most likely to win in these Emmy Breakdowns. We're into the last week of these breakdowns, so we're onto the heavy hitters. Today's category: Outstanding Comedy Series.

"Entourage" — "Entourage" has been on Emmy voters' radar for a few years now, but this is the first time the whole show — instead of a single actor or a technical achievement — has been nominated. It's consistently funny and a good reason to keep an HBO subscription now that "Sex and the City," "Six Feet Under" and "The Sopranos" are all gone. But it's also a relatively niche show, and I'm not sure it's ready for the big trophy just yet. Chance of winning: Low to moderate.

"The Office" — "The Office" is the defending champion in this category, and I don't know if any of the other nominees will be able to unseat it. Granted, this season was a little more uneven than the stellar second season that won it the series award last year, but the six episodes the show gave to voters — see the list here — were among the season's best. The show has also grown from a barely watched show into a bona fide cult hit, and while it still doesn't have the ratings prowess of competitor "Two and a Half Men," it's a show that people feel passionate about, which can count for a lot. Chance of winning: High.

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue. This week, the most exciting options in DVD releases are TV shows, from the third season of "Desperate Housewives," to Season 2 of "Prison Break" to, if you're so inclined, the whole short-lived series of "The Black Donnellys." What follows, however, are the three DVD releases I'm most thrilled to add to my collection today.

"30 Rock" — Season 1
Tina Fey's half-hour sitcom in which she stars as a writer for an "SNL"-type late-night sketch show took some time to find its footing, but once it did, I was totally hooked. Fey's particular brand of dark, quirky humor works well when presented by such a hilarious cast which includes Alec Baldwin, Tracy Morgan, Jane Krakowski and Jack McBrayer, and many priceless guest stars like Emily Mortimer, Isabella Rossalini and Sean Hayes.

The DVD set of this first season includes some cool-looking special features, like a blooper reel, behind-the-scenes featurettes, commentary by various cast members (including Fey and Baldwin), and something called "An Evening With Kenneth" in which Kenneth the Page (Jack McBrayer) does a talk show-type thing with certain characters.

Every year, Variety issues their Women's Impact Report in which they highlight women in the entertainment industry that they think deserve some praise. From industry executives (like United Artists bigwig Paula Wagner) to household names (like Angelina Jolie), the list spotlights some strong, smart, intriguing ladies. For the next few Wednesdays I'll focus on some of the women who I find particularly noteworthy as well. Last week I told you about filmmaker Adrienne Shelly, and today I'm spotlighting Tina Fey.

Frankly, I'm always looking for an excuse to write about Tina Fey, one of my favorite funny ladies. It's no accident that she turns up in Variety's report in the "multitaskers" category, because she's made her mark as a writer, as a producer, and now — with her Emmy-nominated role in "30 Rock" — as an actress as well. But she doesn't just multitask professionally; she's also a mother of an almost-2-year-old, and she lists her vocation in her Variety profile as "writer/performer/diaper-removal expert." TCA News Roundup: NBC Shuffles Shows, Adds Trump

In addition to all-fantasy Mondays, NBC announced a few more changes to its schedule during Monday's TCA presentation. On Tuesday nights, "The Singing Bee" will lead in to a 90-minute edition of "The Biggest Loser." "Friday Night Lights" will shift to 9 p.m. on Fridays instead of 10 p.m., with "Deal or No Deal" as a lead-in and "Las Vegas" following it at 10.
It's official: "The Apprentice" is back with a special celebrity edition. The idea is for celebrities who have a business focus to duke it out, and apparently Donald Trump is encouraging Rosie O'Donnell to sign up. The involved celebrities will be raising money for charity, so at least there's something redeeming about this project.
Jerry Seinfeld will star as himself in the season premiere of "30 Rock," going toe-to-toe with Alec Baldwin's character, the bullish Jack Donaghy. Seinfeld's quip in NBC's statement: "I think it's going to be so refreshing for me to be playing myself in a show that has nothing to do with neurotic, dysfunctional New York characters." Tina Fey, meanwhile, said she was happy to have Seinfeld drop by so the rest of America would learn that "30 Rock" exists.
NBC entertainment co-chairman Ben Silverman believes the network has "the next great reality format" in "Phenomenon," which will feature Uri Geller and Criss Angel searching for the next great mentalist. Geller and Angel will judge contestants' abilities in weekly challenges, with viewers at home voting for the ultimate winner.
Norman Lear, the mind behind "All in the Family" and other classic sitcoms, will be returning to TV, working as a producer on a one-hour comedy focused on a single mother battling sexism on Wall Street.

When Alec Baldwin taped his now-infamous interview for "The View" this week, he said he wanted to leave "30 Rock" so the show wouldn't be affected by his bitter custody battle. Which led me to wonder: What does Alec Baldwin's offscreen behavior have to do with his onscreen work? The only time I think about stars' lives while I'm watching their TV shows or movies is when it comes to relationships; it's weird to watch celebs who are in high-profile marriages be with other people (can anyone look at Brad Pitt without thinking about Angelina?). But I rarely think about their stints in rehab, or their recent fashion disasters, or even their use of inappropriate gay slurs while I'm watching them act as characters. What about you? TV Tonight: The "30 Rock" Finale

"30 Rock" had a rough start this season, with uneven episodes, low ratings and the unfortunate fate of being one of two NBC series going behind the scenes at late-night shows. And yet, it's become one of the shows I most look forward to watching every Thursday night. The show got better the second it ditched the weak Rachel Dratch cameos and gave its other actors room to work. Say what you will about Alec Baldwin these days, but his Jack Donaghy is one of the most consistently funny characters on TV (so, uh, he better not be going anywhere). Tina Fey figured out how to write Liz Lemon as a modern-day Mary Tyler Moore, Tracy Morgan got less annoying, and the supporting cast — most of all the wonderful Jack McBrayer (don't forget to read my interview with him!) — gave the show dimension. I'm thrilled that it will be back in the fall.

But first, we must say goodbye with the final "30 Rock" of the season, guest-starring Sean Hayes as Kenneth's cousin. Jack's mom shows up, and Liz tries to make things work with Floyd, who's apparently off to Cleveland. Plus, Tracy is still missing, and Kenneth is tasked with finding him.
