Sunday's Emmy awards drew the second-smallest audience ever, Variety reports. It drew just 13.1 million viewers, and only the 1990 telecast did worse.
The Hollywood Reporter rounds up who was censored during the Emmy broadcast: Sally Field, Katherine Heigl and Ray Romano.
HBO has picked up a TV series pitch from the Will Ferrell-Adam McKay production company Sanchez Productions, ComingSoon reports.
"Office" producer Greg Daniels wants to take his writing staff on a field trip to Scranton for October's "Office" convention, the Scranton Times-Tribune reports.
Variety has news that A Thousand Splendid Suns, Khaled Hosseini's follow-up novel to The Kite Runner, has already been snatched up for film adaptation.
Billboard names Reba McEntire its Woman of the Year.
Thursday's premiere of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" got the show's best ratings ever, Zap2it reports.
MTV Films will make a feature-length movie version of the YouTube creation Million Dollar Strong, writes Variety.

2007 Primetime Emmy Awards: Thoughts on the Show

I can't let the 2007 Primetime Emmy Awards go by without sharing a few of my thoughts on the broadcast itself. Here's some of what was going through my head as the show went on:

Despite all my fears about Ryan Seacrest's hosting, I actually thought he did a pretty great job. His writers were on the ball, getting in a few zingers — "'Weeds': A great show. An amazing afterparty." — and keeping the most annoying parts of his personality to a minimum, with the possible exception of his appearance in "Tudors" costume (pictured at right). I think the most relief I felt all night was when he announced he wouldn't be singing after all.
I'd been expecting a "Sopranos" love-fest, but instead, the show was shut out of the acting categories, though it did take home one final Outstanding Drama Series award. Not quite the the exuberant sendoff I'd anticipated.
At one point, there was a nearly two-hour break between major award categories. And people complain about the Oscars dragging!
Speaking of "The Sopranos," one of the strangest moments of the night came from the Jersey Boys' tribute to the show. The ultimate tribute with all the cast members on stage was very sweet, but did anyone else find it disconcerting to watch gory, violent "Sopranos" footage with a backdrop of happy, peppy Frankie Valli songs?
I know the announcer pronounced Katherine Heigl's name wrong, but did we need to be reminded of it two more times? No, I think not. Her mom was a cutie, though.

What a night! There were some expected wins, like America Ferrera winning for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy and "The Sopranos" taking home the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series. But then there were some major surprises, too. I found these things to be most startling wins of the 2007 Primetime Emmy Awards:James Spader — Seriously?! I'm slightly surprised Spader beat out Hugh Laurie, but most of all, how is it possible he beat out James Gandolfini in the final season of "The Sopranos"?Jaime Pressly — I had the toughest time figuring out who might win in this category because, between Elizabeth Perkins, Vanessa Williams and Jenna Fischer the talent was so tremendous. I just didn't think Pressly would take this one.Sally Field — Again, the competition in Field's category was very strong (Edie Falco and Kyra Sedgwick?), and this was Field's first season on a new show, so I never truly expected her to take the award.Ricky Gervais — Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for Gervais because I think he's a genius, but I didn't realize the voters would really choose him, considering some of the mainstream hits that Gervais was up against (Sheen of "Two and a Half Men" and the previous voters' favorite Tony Shalhoub)."30 Rock" — Wow, did I not see this coming at all! Kanye Vs Rainn — Who Owned It?

One of the funniest moments of this year's Emmys was the "Don't Forget the Lyrics"-style battle between Kanye West and Rainn Wilson. "Lyrics" host Wayne Brady had the two of them sing a verse from Kanye's "Stronger," declaring Rainn the winner after Kanye swapped a "ya" for a "you." Rainn's so nerdy, but he pulled off Kanye's Kate Moss line with style — and Kanye seemed to handle the loss a little better than he did at, say, the VMAs. Who do you think owned the competition? Ever since the nominations for the 2007 Primetime Emmy Awards were announced, I've been thinking — a lot — about who will be taking home the awards on Sunday. While there are always surprises, here are my best guesses. Don't forget to fill out your ballot for a chance to win a year of free TV!

OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES
My prediction: "The Sopranos." I don't see Emmy voters passing up their last chance to recognize this instant classic.
Secretly rooting for: "The Sopranos." It wasn't my favorite show, but it opened the door for so many other edgy, risky series.

OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES
My prediction: "The Office." It was an up-and-down season, sure, but when it's on, it's unbeatable.
Secretly rooting for: "30 Rock." It probably doesn't deserve the win, but it turned into a comedy gem by the end of the season.

The marquee awards for the primetime Emmys aren't until next weekend, but on Saturday a smaller group got together to hand out a whole slew of creative awards. In terms of networks, HBO walked away with the most awards at 15 while NBC was a close second with 12. There was an upset in the Outstanding Reality Programming category when Kathy Griffin won for My Life On The D-List rather than the reigning champion Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

Emmy Breakdown: Outstanding Drama Series

In the weeks leading up to the 2007 Primetime Emmy Awards, I've been looking at the nominees in some major categories and trying to predict who's most likely to win in these Emmy Breakdowns. Today, it's time for my final breakdown: Outstanding Drama Series.

"Boston Legal" — I've said it before and now I'll say it again: It baffles me that "Boston Legal" got nominated instead of "Friday Night Lights" — or, heck, even instead of "Lost," which ended its season on such a high note. It's a fine show, but it's not one of the five best dramas on TV. But this is about who will win, not who should win, and the fact that "Boston Legal" got four major nominations this year tells me that voters really like it. Still, I think it will only end up in the middle of this pack, mostly thanks to a certain mobster drama. Chance of winning: Low to moderate.

"Grey's Anatomy" — "Grey's" had some wonderful highs last year, and I still count the "Six Days" episodes (which revolve around George's father's illness) and "From a Whisper to a Scream" (in which Cristina tells the Chief about Burke's tremor) among the best dramatic TV I saw all season. On the other hand, there was the ferry arc, which ended with such a whimper that it almost made me give up on "Grey's" altogether. If the show pulls itself together, it can and should win an Emmy one day — but not this year. Chance of winning: Moderate.

In the weeks leading up to the 2007 Primetime Emmy Awards, I'll be looking at the nominees in some major categories and trying to predict who's most likely to win in these Emmy Breakdowns. We're into the last week of these breakdowns, so we're onto the heavy hitters. Today's category: Outstanding Comedy Series.

"Entourage" — "Entourage" has been on Emmy voters' radar for a few years now, but this is the first time the whole show — instead of a single actor or a technical achievement — has been nominated. It's consistently funny and a good reason to keep an HBO subscription now that "Sex and the City," "Six Feet Under" and "The Sopranos" are all gone. But it's also a relatively niche show, and I'm not sure it's ready for the big trophy just yet. Chance of winning: Low to moderate.

"The Office" — "The Office" is the defending champion in this category, and I don't know if any of the other nominees will be able to unseat it. Granted, this season was a little more uneven than the stellar second season that won it the series award last year, but the six episodes the show gave to voters — see the list here — were among the season's best. The show has also grown from a barely watched show into a bona fide cult hit, and while it still doesn't have the ratings prowess of competitor "Two and a Half Men," it's a show that people feel passionate about, which can count for a lot. Chance of winning: High.

James Gandolfini ("The Sopranos") — If "The Sopranos" is going to get the kind of spectacular Emmy send-off that I'm expecting, this category almost has to go to Gandolfini. Yes, he's won three times before; yes, voters could be wary of handing him the award yet again. But Tony Soprano is an icon because of Gandolfini, and I can't imagine voters passing up their last chance to recognize him. Chance of winning: High.

Hugh Laurie ("House") — I'm shocked every time I remember that Hugh Laurie hasn't won an Emmy yet for his role as the acerbic, cranky, brilliant Gregory House — and more amazed that last year, he wasn't even nominated. I don't know why Emmy voters have such an aversion to Laurie, whom I think delivers one of the most consistently strong performances on TV. If not for Gandolfini, I'd think voters might finally come to their senses and give him the award. Chance of winning: Moderate to high.

Patricia Arquette ("Medium") — "Medium" isn't a show I regularly watch (er, I even suggested it should be stopped), but I do know that Arquette is a strong actress who really carries her show. She won in 2005 against a tough crowd that included Glenn Close, and she's certainly a threat in this strong category. But I think she'll be overshadowed by others this time around. Chance of winning: Moderate

Minnie Driver ("The Riches") — I'm thrilled to see this show get some recognition, and I thought Driver really grew into her character over the course of the first season. But the episode she submitted for Emmy consideration was the show's premiere — which I thought was some of her weaker work — and I think that will hurt her against such a tough field. She deserves to be here, but I doubt it's her time to win.Chance of winning: Low

Alec Baldwin ("30 Rock") — Baldwin surprised a lot of people by winning a Golden Globe in January, but that win and this nomination both were well-deserved. "30 Rock" eventually found its footing as an ensemble show, but for a large part of the season, Baldwin was the man responsible for making it funny, and he did so with ease and classic deadpan wit. The rest of the show has grown up around Baldwin, but I still don't think "30 Rock" could work without him. My only concern about his chances: Do enough people watch "30 Rock" to want to see him win? Chance of winning: Moderate to high.

Steve Carell ("The Office") — Some "Office" fans might love the Jim and Pam storyline; others might love Dwight's antics. But when it comes down to it, "The Office" is still a show about Michael Scott, and that has everything to do with Steve Carell. He's put monumental effort into making an unlikable character seem sympathetic, good-intentioned and sometimes even sweet. The writing for Michael occasionally was too over-the-top or inappropriate this year, but Carell deserves credit for reigning his character in most of the time. He's been nominated before, but I think this might be his year to take home the trophy. Chance of winning: High.
