AFI's 10 Top 10 Films: Do You Agree?

Jun 18 2008 - 10:31am This week, the American Film Institute announced its choices for the 10 greatest movies in each of 10 genres, ranging from fantasy to epic to mystery. To create the list, AFI chose 50 films in each of the categories, then handed out ballots to 1,500 greats from the film community, who narrowed the choices down to the final winners. Lists like this are simply meant to be debated, of course, so I'm curious to hear your take on which films are deserving and which were left out. I haven't seen enough of the movies to say whether I agree or not. I just watched it for the fun of it.

Oh, and watching this reminds me of why I love (really) good movies. I need to rewatch some old movies and see even more I haven't seen already. I like that this list is done by people who really appreciate well done movies and not done by someone who would settle for mediocre choices. I have to admit I'm a bit of a film snob (sort of).

I watched this last night and was really surprised at how randomly they broke it down ('Gangster' and 'Courtroom Drama' seemed really specific). Alot of it was predictable (Godfather for Gangster and Mockingbird for Courtroom Drama).

Star Wars should have been the #1 scifi.

And where was the Musical category. They left off The Sound of Music and My Fair Lady, both of which I was expecting to see.

I was totally pissed off about some of the films that were in the Top 10 Fantasy: Groundhogs Day, great movie and I guess it is a fantasy, but just barely; Field of Dreams, not a great movie and should have been under Sports if anything, not Fantasy; Miracle on 37th Street & It's a Wonderful Life, these are CHRISTMAS movies, and not Fantasies. I honestly think The Princess Bride should have been on that list - it is classic and actually very well-written.
Also, what about the other categories of movies - horror, historic drama (although epic did seem to cover this), comedy, foreign, etc.? Are they going to release another 10 of 10?

Also, for animation, why Pinochio and not The Little Mermaid, which was the movie that basically brought back Disney?
