wow i can't believe someone would actually try to compare a group of completely different artists. project runway works because at the end of the day most people have similar taste in clothes as far as what is actually wearable according to current trends, and it's all still fabric. but how can they expect an artist to be "the best" at every medium? i would expect an artist to aspire to be "the best" in their chosen medium, not everything. plus i think people are much more open minded when it comes to art and can have extremely different tastes. basically, i don't like the idea of this show, and i don't think the "art-world" will translate well into competetive pop culture reality tv.

It sounds like a far too complicated project. Just not focused. Plus, can't artists spend like a year on one painting? I just don't see how this is going to work, and how SJP is going to fit in.

jlr — I was wondering about that, too. I know that Project Runway makes menswear designers and lingerie designers and denim designers all design women's clothing, and Top Chef contestants have to cook all styles regardless of their own specialties — but those seem like small differences compared to, say, drawing vs. sculpting vs. product design, right?

i agree with the above comment that 'art' is just too open and subjective a category to make into a reality show. while it might be an interesting concept, doing these vastly different kinds of challenges, it just isn't the same as projrun where people can still be judged across a fairly consistent set of criteria. so pitting different types of artists and expecting them to be able to pull off quality work in 2-d and 3-d mediums...eh, i'm thinking that unless the people chosen are all amazingly awesome in everything, we're gonna see a lot of BSed work. as an artist/designer who went through an art school that made us do everything under the art umbrella, i've definitely seen this firsthand, haha.

so...i dunno. i may tune in b/c i have an interest but i can't see it blowing up the same way as project runway.

Don't get me wrong - I love art. But, for one thing, art as a whole just seems to be so much more subjective than fashion. Also, what would the challenges be like? Would painters have to photograph and sculptors have to do graphic design? This doesn't make sense at all to me.

I think it could work but agree that the focus would need to be narrowed somehow.

If I understand the premise it sounds like they are going to have artists compete in all mediums. So a painter would be expected to take a great photograph? That may relate in a visual way but not in technique. So instead of the "Top Painter" they're looking for "top Overall Artist?

Art and design are very different things; I would not expect an artist to do what I do, and I won't dabble in their field. And, as I know from first hand experience, usually people are good at working in 3D or 2D. It's very, very rare that someone would be as proficient in both.

I don't know. Part of me thinks that no one can even define "art" so how can you judge it like that? But in design school (I went to a multidisciplinary program where we all did graphic, industrial, and architectural design), we always begged if we could have a Project Runway style crit.

Is there nothing that they won't make a reality show about?

I think it sounds interesting and if it managed to go on t.v. I would give it a chance.

i LOVE SJP but i don't know about this show. i think that with too many varieties of art - there really won't be consistency about how the contestants are judged. i guess we'll just have to wait and see

Um... art really can't be judged like dresses or the amount of money someone makes. It's subjective.

I am a professional artist and I think it's a great idea! I've been painting since I was a little girl and I've worked with every possible medium. If you are truely artistic, it doesn't matter the medium or what part of the art field, you should be able to achieve a successful piece of work, no matter what! I would definately be up for the challange and would love to watch other artists show what there made of! Art goes much deeper than a couple college credits!!
