Heigl and Gerard Team Up For Romantic Comedy

The basics:
Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler will star together in The Ugly Truth, which will center on "a romantically challenged morning show producer (Heigl) who is reluctantly embroiled by her chauvinistic correspondent (Butler) in a series of outrageous tests to prove his theories on relationships and help her find love."

It sounds . . . kind of ugly.
There's a successful woman whose life isn't complete until she finds a man and she turns to a chauvinistic dude for advice. This sounds totally less sexist than Knocked Up, Katherine Heigl. Surely these "outrageous tests" won't be humiliating at all.

Though there is some good news . . .
The Ugly Truth will reunite the creative team behind Legally Blonde: director Robert Luketic and writers Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith. I pretty much love Legally Blonde so this is encouraging.

What do you think of The Ugly Truth? Does it have potential? Will you probably still see it no matter what because Gerard Butler is in it? Discuss.

I am afraid we won´t be able to get rid of her for a while. It´s a pity, I like Gerard Butler, but I won´t pay for a katherine´s movie

didn't she complain that knocked up was sexist? And then she talked about how 27 Dresses was just a silly chick flick, and that her character on Greys was a ratings ploy?? You would think she would try to move away from that

this actually sounds a little bit like an Ashley Judd movie "Someone Like You" coincidentally, starring fellow foreign hottie Hugh Jackman as the chauvinistic co-worker on the...wait for it....morning talk show

Seriously, I'd be doing the same thing if I was her. Sure some of her movies are dumb, or sexist, but Whatever, this is her job and you do what makes you money. Personally, I don't hate her as much as everyone else apparently does. I kind of like that she says what she thinks and doesn't care about how it's percieved.
REGARDLESS, I'll see it because I love Gerard Butler. heaven.

Alright, alright, I agree the movie will be a success as both actors are buzz-worthy and gorgeous.

Think about how much of the success of "PS: I love you" was based on Butler's face, accent, body, voice, and all around appeal. I'm willing to bet he had a lot to do with box office success...

Plus, as Vanity Fair aptly points out, she's Hollywood's 'it' girl right now. Good for her to ride that out. She may be becomming type-cast but making the move from television to film is often impossible without being type-cast.

Seriously, Katherine. You can't diss "Knocked Up" for being sexist, then go on to star in "27 Dresses" and this, neither of which are really putting forth forward-thinking idea about women. I could be wrong, but this movie does not sound promising.

Gerard is hot - I've loved him since his crappy Dracula movie! I guess I don't watch him for his talent...

I'll have to see a preview. Maybe. It sounds like she's keeping with the same kinda role, though. I wish she'd expand her horizons.

I agree with IrishCharm - sounds like "Someone Like You".
I like both of the actors so I would probably give it a try.

i second yaliyah, this does sound like "someone like you."

lastly heigl is just asking for it, isn't she.

...and gerard needs a new agent who can remove him from bad romantic comedy to more serious role. i know he has what it takes to be a serious actor....or maybe he isn't as serious about acting, like it's just all fun and games for him. i'm reading way too much into this. need. to. back. away. from. the. computer.

Oh Gerry. I love the man... even before all the 300 hype... and I think he's a brilliant actor. But. He has to pick better roles. Cross reference: P.S. I Love You. Which I didn't. No matter how cute he is, (and regardless of the fact that I met him while he was filming it)....
Ok, fine. I'll probably go see it anyway. But that doesn't mean I'll like it.

Well, I feel like the actual Legally Blonde message was really empowering to women, but I wouldn't be surprised if the original screenplay synopsis was something like "Ditzy blonde sorority girl tries to make it in the man's world of law school." So, it might be better than it sounds, if it has same creative team.

I would watch it just for Gerard, he's gorgeous and yes, I'm pathetic, lol. Also I love Legally Blonde so it could be a good chick flick (although I hate that term, it is true.)

I don't like chick flicks, so I'm biased not to like this. However, I don't think you can put the blame entirely on Katherine. I mean, she's not a writer - she's a comedy actress. And unfortunately, unless you're Tina Fey, there's not a slew of good female comedy roles to choose from. And most comedies, even the ones that have good writing in them, play on stereotypes especially when those stereotypes compliment/contradict each other in "humourous" ways (ie. the dumb male baffoon vs the shrill prissy woman). It's just an unfortunate reality. And I know you could bring up Ellen Page's turn in Juno as an example as a female lead that isn't sexist or stereotypical, but thats exactly why the role was so heralded - because it was refreshing, new, and honest.
