Mad Money: Mad Problems

Fortunately, I don't think I'll be ruining your weekend plans. The votes indicate that Mad Money is the new movie you least want to see. I don't blame you. From the looks of the trailer, I had mediocre expectations at best but I was secretly crossing my fingers that MM would be a guilty pleasure (a la The First Wives Club). Or that it might turn out to be an intelligent bank robbery flick like Bandits. Unfortunately Mad Money proves to be neither deliciously bad nor covertly smart. It's just bad-bad and dumb-dumb.

The first problem — and it's a big one — is that almost everybody in this film is miscast. Let's begin with Diane Keaton who plays Bridget, an upper-middle class housewife who is forced to get a job after her husband (Ted Danson) is laid off. In theory this makes sense, but the execution — as we watch Bridget search for a job that will utilize her comparative literature degree then quickly accept a janitor position when the first couple interviews don't pan out — feels forced. As does Ms. Keaton's performance. Next is Katie Holmes who does not stop dancing throughout the entire film. It's supposed to be quirky and endearing, but more than anything it's annoying. Lastly, Queen Latifah is only as good as her roles allow her to be. And sadly, obnoxious stereotypes withstanding, there isn't a lot for her to work with.

To read what else I thought about Mad Money read more.

Even if the movie had been perfectly cast, it still would have fallen victim to a weak plot. Apparently the film is based on a true story, and the only excuse for this awful plot I can imagine is that the filmmakers chose not to embellish at all. If that were the case — and it's so obviously not, since the movie is so over-the-top — a documentary would have been preferable.

The absurdity of the storyline is still not the biggest issue I have with the film. That honor goes to the worst ending ever. It is just so stupid. What the filmmakers forgot, or perhaps chose to ignore, is that people love the "a-ha" moment at the end of bank heist films. Think Ocean's Eleven. The bare bones plot is (spoiler alert): the women steal money, they get caught, then they get released from prison because there is no physical evidence. That's all she wrote!

If you're in the mood for a better female-centric movie this weekend, go see 27 Dresses instead. You'll thank me.

I would def. not see this movie. I'm not about to pay $10 to see a sloppy movie, with no real captivating story or humor. I could watch something on TV. Plus, Diane Keaton is just a troublemaker... and she has a foul mouth to boot. I would not willingly patronize any of her endeavors.

I could not agree with you more. Diane has in my opinion completed a string of melodrama, cliched pieces that all fall flat. As for Katie Homes, she has never commanded the screen. Are supposed to believe that because she is now Mrs. Tom Cruise, she somehow has depth??? I'm laughing just thinking about it.
Queen should find more roles where she is not the slapstick.

I love the title .....Mad Money: Mad Problems
I knew that I didn't want to see it the moment i heard Katie Holmes say (in the commercial) "I don't like to think" or something lame like that

Katie Holmes is not a good actress. If you've seen "Thank You for not Smoking" then you know. I'm sure this applies to the Batman movie as well.

Queen Latifah deserves better. She's a good actress but she needs to stand up and demand better scripts. Or start her own production company and make the type of movies that don't rely on idiotic stereotypes (but maybe she just wants the paycheck?).

Diane Keaton is just...sad. I love her style but she's capable of so much more. Too bad she doesn't take advantage of her acting chops. Maybe she's got a big mortgage to pay off?

The ONLY thing Katie Holmes has been good in (I'm not counting Dawson's Creek because to me Katie Holmes is not acting in DC...Joey is just like her) was Pieces of April. I thought she was very intriguing in that movie. Of course, there's no way she will ever be allowed to do a movie like that again by Mr. Cruise.

I think Katie Holmes was okay in that scary movie about high schoolers being brainwashed... but that was back before she ACTUALLY got brainwashed.

This movie looks like the three of them got bored or needed money or something (which clearly isn't true in Katie's case). I wonder if people are as turned off to Katie in movies as they are with her crazy husband.

i just keep trying to think that this movie will do better than people think. especially since katie turned down Batman for it. and the cast actually has potential when they aren't playing crazy 'characters' all the time

I have never thought Katie was a good actress. She was terrible in Batman, and I am glad she was replaced. I could tell that she was going to be especially horrible from the part in the commerical where she hams it up worse than a child actor when she says, "I don't LIKE being SMART!"

Yikes. I wouldn't see this film if you paid me. (Love Latifa and Diane when they are in good films, though).

Katie is a great actress, if you are into eye rolling and smirking. I am so glad that she dropped out of Batman. Thank you Katie!
