More lists? Sign me up! Entertainment Weekly has compiled their list of the top 25 love songs ever, and I must say I pretty much agree with most of this one. The order is subject to debate, but these things are always a matter of opinion anyway. I love the top five in particular, and EW provides pretty thoughtful explanations for each of the selections.

Some that I might add would be the upbeat, happy-in-love Pointer Sisters song "I'm So Excited" as well as the super groovy Queen favorite "Crazy Little Thing Called Love." What love anthems would you add?

EW's Top 25 Love Songs:

25. The Cure, “Just Like Heaven”
24. Stevie Wonder, “As”
23. Prince, “Purple Rain”
22. Elton John, “Your Song”
21. Cyndi Lauper, “Time After Time”
20. Bob Dylan, “If Not for You”

For the rest of the list, read more.

19. Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”
18. Beyonce, "Crazy in Love"
17. The Righteous Brothers, “Unchained Melody”
16. Otis Redding, “These Arms of Mine”
15. Sam Cooke, “You Send Me”
14. Etta James, “At Last”
13. Percy Sledge, “When a Man Loves A Woman”
12. Johnny Cash, “Ring of Fire”
11. Paul McCartney, “Maybe I’m Amazed”
10. Peter Gabriel, “In Your Eyes”
9. U2, “All I Want Is You”
8. Guns ‘n Roses, “Sweet Child ‘O Mine”
7. Rolling Stones, “Wild Horses”
6. Whitney Houston, “I Will Always Love You”
5. Al Green, “Let’s Stay Together”
4. Aretha Franklin, “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman”
3. The Beatles, “Something”
2. Elvis Presley, “Can’t Help Falling in Love”
1. The Beach Boys, “God Only Knows”

Bob Dylan 's "If Not for You"?? They picked that one out of a bag with their eyes closed didn't they? Not that I don't like the song, but it wouldn't even top my list of 25 best Dylan songs, let alone best love songs.

And ahead of Elton John's "Your Song" no less? That one ought to be in the top 10.

Why do I have the feeling it only won because of the Love Actually movie;)...Anyway, it's a great list, I think. Most of them could be number one.

I actually have more issues with Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire, and G&R Sweet Child of Mine being on the list then the Dylan song.
I expected to see Claptons "Wonderful Tonight" near the top, and its no where to be seen.
I also have issues with the "singers" getting credit for songs they didn't write. Like "I Will Always Love You" should be credited to Dolly Parton, maybe, "preformed by Whitney Houston"?
Same for Elvis, did he ever actually write a song or just cop credit?

i agree jinx, i was thinking the same then when I came across Whitney and Elvis, they will never give the true credit for the songs he made.

Jinx, it's not that those singers are getting credit for the songs, it's that the EW writers chose those specific renditions of the songs (they chose Whitney's version instead of Dolly's, etc.). They acknowledge that some of these renditions they chose were not originally written by the artists they chose.
I personally like Dolly's version more.

I get it Buzz, thanks for the clarification. Smiling

I don't think I ever realised Ring of Fire was a love song!

Sorry, but there are a few songs on this list that raised my eyebrows.....

Some that I feel should have made the list in lieu of others:

Rascal Flatts - Bless The Broken Road
    Incubus - I Miss You
    Sarah McLachlan - Ice Cream

I would have liked to see "Have I Told You Lately that I Love You" (also known as "Ease My Troubles"). That's a GREAT song!

"Ring of Fire" just conjures memories of getting drunk at Wrigley Field during a baseball game and belting it out along with the organ. Eye-wink If anything I'd think "Walk the Line" would be on there. Huh.

"Crazy Little Thing Called Love" SHOULD be on there! I know more break-up songs than love songs, though, so I can't think of any other additions. And I have to agree with "Maybe I'm Amazed"--the Jem version is brilliant as well. Oh, and as for "God Only Knows", Jamie Cullum does this beautiful version of it on his bass player's album. I can't remember the album's name off the top of my head (the bassist's name is Geoff Gascoyne), but he arranges the song in the style of the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" and it's just beautiful. If I ever get married that will be my wedding song.

No "Stand By Me"??? That is the FIRST song that jumps to my mind when I think love song. Ben E. King wrote the most romantic song ever...

um... there is no Luther Vandross on that list. Which should definitely be considered a crime.

god only knows is absolutely my favorite love song of all time, with your song as a close second. I do think there were some very weird choices on the list though, beyonce?? really?

The husband and I looked at this list together, and we agree with a lot of the songs (U2 and The Cure and Otis Redding and and and...almost all of them!). We looked a bit askance at the Beyonce song (no song less than 5 years old should have been considered!), and GnR, really? I mean, I love "Sweet Child of Mine" on principle, but would never include it in a list of best love songs. And I hate the Whitney Houston version of that damn song, I'd rather hear Dolly or even better, never hear it again at all.

And for those who didn't know "Ring of Fire" is a love song, go look up the lyrics. He's singing about be on fire with love for June Carter. The first stanza goes, "Love is a burning thing, and it makes a fiery ring. Bound by wild desire, I fell into a ring of fire."

That said, there are a ton of songs that would be on my personal list that are awesome songs that I love, but may not necessarily be widely known enough for the general population (for example, "Far, Far Away" by Wilco). Some of my favorites, though, should replace those songs I disagree with on the list Smiling

"Night and Day" by Cole Porter, performed by Ella Fitzgerald
"Moondance" or "Crazy Love" by Van Morrison
"In My Arms Again" or "Forever Came Today" or "Someday We'll Be Together" by the Supremes

And I LOVE the suggestion of "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", but I find "I'm So Excited" really annoying...

I'm not much of a fan of the song but Jonatha Brooke (love her) has a nice version of God Only Knows.

Interesting mix of love and anti-love songs.

a lot of these are overly obvious, but at the same time- a lot of these songs have been put on mix cd's from my boyfriend. i guess they're obvious for a reason.

I would prefer Stand By Me to Ring of Fire. Ring is too corny to be taken seriously, we used to make fun of it.
Em, you may want to rethink Elenor Rigby for a wedding, although a gorgeous song, I thought it was about lonely people.

Stand by Me, Walk the Line (instead of Ring of Fire, imo) Crazy Little Thing Called Love, all would have been excellent.
