Atonement was great.

I think Atonement is probably one of the most overrated movies out. I never felt the love of the main characters until they out right said I love you. So I never cared what happened to them and the war scene was too long and confusing, it felt like two movies smashed together. I think they were too pretentious with the Golden Compass, thinking it would be an easy hit and leaving the ending wide open for a sequel. Sometimes it's hard for the movie to stay close to the book but I can understand why some fans would be upset that I am Legend was so different. Bridge to Terabithia was also not as impressive as the previews led you to believe. Is there ever a movie better than the book?

What about No Country for Old Men? I loved Atonement too.

The Kite Runner was amazing. It took key parts of the book and kept it in its element. The adaption was done beautifully with even quotes taken directly form the book. I was so proud and usually I'm disappointed with books to movies, but this was great.
Another great one was Harry potter and the Order of the Phoenix. For the fourth one I was really disappointed, but this summer when the fifth one came out it was awesome! They really knew how to adapt a favorite book to an amazing book.

The announcement of Peter Jackson producing 2 prequel films that have to do with The Hobbit is big news for Book to Film. Even though it hasn't gotten made yet, I'm excited.

PS I Love You - was a great book - i have yet to see the movie partly because i saw they got rid of alot of main characters and changed the storys setting from Ireland to the US

I loved the Golden Compass (movie). So much that I bought the books. I'm halfway through the first one.

There Will Be Blood was an adaptation of Oil! and I thought it was one of the best movies I saw this year.

Though I haven't read the book, I think No Country for Old Men was one of the best movies I've seen this year. Atonement was good, but I truly wasn't blown away by it. Looking forward to seeing There Will Be Blood and The Kite Runner, one of my all time favorite books.

haven't seen the golden compass yet btu love the books so can't wait! will have to see the kite runner too... i am legend was merely okay.

I just bought the book Atonement and I'm excited to read it. I'll most likely see the movie afterwards.

I would have to say Golden Compass, because i havent seen many movies this year, and the ones i did see (Harry Potter, I am Legend) didnt stick to the book at all.

I was so unbelievably disappointed with both Golden Compass and Harry Potter. With HP, they turned IMHO the best book of the series into one of the weakest films so far.

I didn't really appreciate Atonement until a couple of days later when I realized I was still thinking about it. It was a beautifully crafted film, though I have not read the book. I loved the mixture of the images, the music and the typing in the beginning; I thought it created a really interesting flow. The film definitely made me want to read the book, and I think that is one of the best effects an adaptation can have on an audience.

Geez, what movies weren't adapted from books this year?? Atonement, Kite Runner, No Country for Old Men, Into the Wild, There Will Be Blood, The Golden Compass, and of course Harry Potter. Out of the ones I've seen, I think Atonement and Into the Wild were the best adaptations. Atonement was the book through and through, though I don't know if I would have felt for the two lovers as much as I did had I not read the book. (I can see where it would be hard to understand their love in the movie, and that's the only criticism I would have for the film) I thought Into the Wild was wonderful, and having read the book afterwards, I think Sean Penn deserves at least a nomination for writing. It was a such a different experience to read the book, but I felt the film really complimented the book as opposed to competing or just repeating what was already written.

The Kite Runner was okay, but there were things they left out of the movie that seemed really essential to me. The fact that the kites' strings were attached with glass shards in the book gave you a sense of the difference in culture, that the boys were taught in every day life that you must suffer the pain to reach your victory. Leaving this out of the movie also posed the confusing problem of how exactly were the kite's cut down without the glass?

Order of the Phoenix was my least favorite HP adaptation thus far. It happened to be my favorite book of the HP series, and I just don't think they kept the emotion that the book had. Harry's character was not nearly as angry enough, and in this sense along with the overall flow of scenes, the script was lacking. It seemed choppy, and long and as a story was not that entertaining. Hopefully with Steve Kloves back to write, the 6th and 7th will be much better again.

STARDUST was pretty great. haven't seen the movie but p.s. i love you was a nice book too

I think atonement is much beter cause it discuses human feeling not fantasy , and the story itself is very interesting .

I was going to post the movie, "Hoot" by Carl Hiaasen and directed by Wil Shriner but then looked it up and it is listed as coming out in 2006. If you missed it, it is a good for for kids/families. Movie is about kids trying to save endangered Florida burrowing owls. Funny, but brings up items to actually talk about within the family.

Definitely Atonement! I saw it today and it was amazing. Great movie and such a moving story...now I need to go buy the book.

i almost feel ashamed that i haven't read ANY of the adaptations! i almost bought atonement to read but then realized that i didn't feel like being put through the emotional trauma...

I have No Country for Old Men, The Other Boleyn Girl and Atonement saved for my summer vacation reading, along with others. I'm waiting for The Kite Runner on DVD since it wasn't playing that long down here, but the book was fantastic! I prefer to read the book before the screen adaptation simply because the book came first & is the author's vision. I usually find it difficult to see a movie, then go to the book after Hollywood gets through with it.

when i read atonement a few years back, i fell in love with the book. i couldn't put it down until i had finished it. when i saw that it was being adapted into a movie, i couldn't wait until it came out. when i finally saw it, i was so disappointed. perhaps my expectations were too high, especially after so many critics exclaimed how magnificent it was and that it remained true to the novel. although the film did stay true to mcewan's novel, i felt like there was something missing - mostly a spark/chemistry between keira knightly and james mcavoy. i felt that their love for each other was much more palpable in the novel than in the book. because of that, i couldn't get lost in the film as much as i had hoped.
