Well, my original excitement over a Fight Club reunion with Edward Norton and Brad Pitt starring in State of Play has been dashed. First Pitt dropped out of the project and was replaced by Russell Crowe. Now Norton has decided to leave as well, with Ben Affleck in negotiations to replace him.

Though while Pitt's departure had to do with issues he had with the script, Norton's problems had to do with a conflicting schedule, as Norton committed to starring in the indie comedy Leaves of Grass. Variety continues:

Now it will be Affleck who plays a fast-rising politician who is caught up in a murder conspiracy. Crowe will play a journalist who leads a newspaper’s investigation into the killing. He’s conflicted in that he once ran the pol’s campaigns, and he is now romancing his estranged wife. Still in the cast are Helen Mirren, Rachel McAdams, Robin Wright Penn and Jason Bateman.

All this shifting around does not inspire a lot of confidence in this project. Then again, maybe Crowe and Affleck will be a fantastic duo in this situation. I just hope this cast stays put!

Disappointing, for sure. But maybe Affleck and Crowe can pull this off.

as long as the rest of the cast (Helen Mirren, Rachel McAdams, Robin Wright Penn and Jason Bateman) stay put, along with the replacements of crowe and affleck than i still have hope for this movie.

just because norton and pitt are gone, the excitement doesn't have to go away with them. yes i know crowe isn't exactly brad pitt in the looks department and affleck is no edward norton in the talent department, but russel crowe never fails to shine in every role he takes and affleck (i can't believe i'm actually defending him here) has shown that he has grown as an actor in hollywoodland (was that the movie called with diane lane last year?).

then you have helen, rachel, jason and robin....the movie still sounds good in my head.

    booo that suck !

If they leave the project it probably mean that the change they made in the script are pretty bad.

I'm not a huge Russel Crowe fan. But I have to say that Russel is known for picking some really good movies. He also has a Oscar to show for it. I don't think Russel is going to take a movie that has a bad script. It has to be fixed before he starts the movie.

As for Ben Affleck, If their is anyone who can step into this role on short notice it's him.
Ben has campaigned for Al Gore, The Clinton's, Eward Kennedy and John Kerry. And Ben can hold his own with just about any Politico on TV shows. He already his the research done.

    This could be interesting.
