I've already given my whole diatribe about this strike in comments before, but I am directly affected, not just as a viewer but as an employee to the production world. I was listening to the radio this morning and they were saying that it will "hit the viewers the hardest" which annoys me because it's simply not true. People tend to forget that there are thousands being put out of work by this strike. Here's hoping it's not as long as they're predicting... :-/

Since this dispute will be resolved eventually, it's too bad it couldn't have been settled without causing pain to anyone. Here's hoping for a quick, reasonable resolution.

At first I thought that it wouldn't really affect the shows, but when I saw that chart, I was shocked. Why can't Jon Stewart write his own show? He is funny. I thought most of it was written by him anyway. Some of the shows won't be finished--like Lost--and that is a shame. But I think television and movie writing is one of the most under-rated and under-paid jobs there is. When you see a good movie, the first thing most people attribute it to is the acting. Then maybe he directing, but what about the, uh, STORY? I heard that they typically make about 200,000 a year, which is NOTHING compared to what actors and execs make. One one hand, I think strikes are entirely selfish, but on the other hand I think if they weren't being taken seriously and being heard, there may have been no other way. I'm sure there was a proverbial straw that broke the camel's back, and they didn't all just wake up one day and want to ruin the entertainment industry.

I feel bad for all the other lower paid workers this will be affecting.

i am concerned for all of the people this puts out of work. i'm not too concerned about my own tv watching... i know i'll find something else to do.

my biggest concern so far is the effect this will have on the southern california economy...

I didn't vote, because there was no 'other' and there was no option that 'I care about it because of the impact it has on the community it involves'. I may miss my shows, but that is TRIVIAL in comparision to people who are losing income. Let's not be selfish people, this is hitting more than just the writers. As PhaseKitty has shown, it is hitting the little people in the business who have more to loose by not working. Sure I care about equality and getting what you deserve, but I care more about an hourly employee than someone who makes $200,000 a year already.

MandyJoBo- Jon Stewart can and does write a lot of his own stuff, but he's in WGA too, and therefore has to strike with everyone else. It might be interesting if you live in the area to check out the pandemonium going on at the studios, plus there are a lot of directors and actors that are in the WGA. I read somewhere that it's mandatory that members picket 20 hours a week, but I can't imagine Jay Leno or Jon Stewart standing on the picket line for 4 hours a day!

I can see the picketers from my office window right now- it's sorta crazy.

and its not even just people who work for on the shows... going with what kiddy said, its everything in the area where those people live, shop ect... retail, food and service industries, everything will suffer in one way or another..

i guess i'll be bummed about old shows but it'll just give me an excuse to get out and do something worth while or read a book! i hope that the people who are affected by it will get their jobs back and then some.

Ouch, PhaseKitty...hope everything works out. You're right, a lot of people tend to forget that it's not just the people at home who are affected...it takes a lot of people to put shows/movies together!!!

Yes, I care a lot!! I watch Leno, Colbert and Stewart almost every night and will miss new material... and a few other regular shows that might be in trouble like "24" and "Lost". Yikes! I hope they can get this resolved fairly quickly.. it's not just the writers but a whole industry affected. It could really hurt the LA economy with a ripple effect. Good luck, PhaseKitty!

Yes I care, and it is totally going to suck come January when we run out of new shows, but in the end I support the strike because they deserve to be paid right.

ITA. The focus being on losing shows is really disgusting, in my opinion. Who cares about new episodes when people are losing their income, or at least a good portion of it?

This is why I dislike strikes in general - so many people outside the issue are affected in a huge way. I understand why the WGA is striking, and they're not the ones I dislike in this situation. They should've been given more money and this should've been headed off a LONG time ago.

I have a friend who's a film screenwriter but luckily she's been prepared for this thing so hopefully she will ride it out alright. I mostly look forward to getting caught up on the 30 Rock, Brothers and Sisters, and Beverly Hills, 90210 episodes piling up on my dvr.

I'm bummed about Conan...I love Conan. I watch him pretty much every night.

And the only other one I'm sort of bummed about is Scrubs. I mean, it's the last season and they have most of their episodes filmed so it's a little early to get "upset".

That chart didn't say anything about House. What's gonna happen with House?
I'm sad for all those people that this strike is gonna effect but hopefully the strike won't last long and everyone will benefit from it.

I definitely don't care yet. I don't watch anything on TV and when it comes to movies, there's loads of old stuff to catch up on. But I hope things are resolved soon for everyone directly affected by the strike.

To be honest, I could do without TV and think this is a blessing. Buuuut, I do feel bad for the employees.

I hear you, alillee - what about House? My most immediate gripe is that there won't be new Daily Shows and Colbert Reports, but beyond that House is the only thing I need. I can deal without some new episodes of 30 Rock and The Office for a bit.

I'm really glad that this issue is being brought to light, though. It's crazy that writers aren't getting anything from internet releases.

As far as it hurting the "little people," yeah, it does suck. It pleased me to see that Jon Stuart is planning on paying the Daily & Colbert writers for the first couple of weeks, anyway. I think that says a lot about him.

I just really hope this gets resolved efficiently. It's so strange to think about what it would be like with no new programming.

It affects the Daily Show, and that annoys me. And I think it also affects The Soup, so that REALLY annoys me (I need my weekly new dose of Joel!). Grrr... greedy studio bosses.

I love that people forget just what the studio heads do. They run the whole studio. They oversee hundreds of films, while putting in more hours than most people can imagine.

Most writers make that 200 grand "or so" a year by working from home, on their own schedule, while taking couple hour lunches, and (if its in film) they likely make that much money off ONE script. From there they get additional pay for rewrites, edits, new drafts, money when the film gets released, part of the box office, part of the DVD sales... the list goes on.

Are you really going to compare jobs that are so drasticly different.

Most produciton jobs don't get money on the backend like the writers do. And hundreds of non-union workers (Production Assistants, Office Assistants, Secretaries, Set PAs...) barely even make minimum wage and put in between 60 and 95 hours a week. I bet all of these guys would settle for even half of what the writers get for one script.

ThePit, I'm pretty sure that a MAJORITY of the writers are NOT making $200,000 a year. They don't ALL have cushy write-at-home jobs. There are some actual hard-working writers in the WGA, and they're the ones that are needing the changes that they're striking about.

That's not even mentioning the people that are still waiting to sell a script to get into the WGA. They have other jobs too that compete with their writing time. You can't schedule creativity like most other jobs.

I'm really bummed about the strike. I think the writers deserve to get what they are asking for! The actors in our favorite shows make good money and continue make money long after the show is over. These shows wouldn't be the same with out the writers!! Hope all of it works out soon~I don't like reruns!!

its not just that i dont want to miss out on my favorite series -- and dont want to be left on a cliffhanger. its that the writers are RIGHT! you can take the best actors and actresses and the best producer - but without a great idea and an amazing script, the show will bomb.
the writers had to take a pay cut a few years ago because of a little project that "wasnt going to be so profitable" known as putting tv shows on video and dvd. they lost out big time on that one. and the way tv is going nowadays, we will all soon be watching is on the web from giant media centers. i already watch some shows online!
the writers work really hard, and are the reason shows are successful. they should get residuals from the internet and from dvds!
