Do You Prefer TV Sitcoms or Dramas?

Is the TV sitcom dying? USA Today printed an interesting story recently pointing out that there are only half as many half-hour sitcoms on TV today as there were five years ago. I know I've certainly turned more to dramas and hour-long "dramedies" such as "Ugly Betty" than to the traditional half-hour sitcom. All of this makes me wonder: When you turn on the TV, would you rather watch a sitcom or a drama?

Usually my attention span can't handle the dramas, unless they're the old standby's-- L&O:SVU, etc. Bring on the sitcoms!!

Dramas, for the most part. The only sitcoms I watch are "The Office" and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia."

And "Weeds," although that doesn't really count as a sitcom, does it?

this is tough! i like them both! a lot of dramas these days are pretty funny at times, so it's kind of like getting the best of both worlds. although, i would watch Ugly Betty over any drama...so, comedy?

I like sitcoms and dramas all the same. The thing for me is that sitcoms are waaay too short! It was frustrating getting 21 minutes of Arrested Development before it moved on to whatever meager show Fox had to follow. Sitcoms only work on a night where all sitcoms are worth watching (NBC's Thursday night lineup from the 90's and this past year since Scrubs joined The Office and ...Earl).

i like them both, but it seems like tv is seriously lacking in the comedy department. the only sitcom i religiously watch is the office. however, i do find "how i met your mother", "new adventures of old christine" and 'two and a half men funny." i guess overall i'm a tv drama type of girl.

I don't think you can choose either one...there are both sitcoms and dramas that are awesome and both that stink. Interestingly, the pictures you posted are from my 2 very favorite shows...The Office and Grey's.

I prefer dramadies. I really don't think there are many good sitcoms around, nor have there been for a while. Although, I don't know about 'The Office' - it just seems pointless to watch that.

it really depends on what mood i'm in. but definitely will watch either a sitcom or drama over any reality program, unless it's project runway. Smiling

I barely watch TV, but since Friends ended I have pretty much zero interest in sitcoms.

Is it me, or does it seem like there are hardly any sitcoms anymore these days? It seems like ABC is just flooded with dramas and other networks are trying to pick up the slack by doing the same...Even paid cable channels are throwing out shows now as well.

I dont know, I just feel like ever since shows like Friends and Will and Grace have gone off the air, there hasnt been anything truley funny that has caught my attention. Everything is either a serious "cop, investigative, murder mystery" show or its a witty serious drama.

both! although i've never really been a huge fan of the traditional sitcom with laugh track, i love offbeat comedies like the office, and dramas with a touch of humor. basically, if it's quality tv, i'll watch it.

i don't have a lot of time in the evenings for tv, so if i watch a drama i am usually confused or i am interested but have to skip episodes which then leaves me confused! but sitcoms at least entertain me with a short story that i don't feel like i need to keep up with every week

I said "other," because I like both but there are hardly any good sitcoms on anymore. My favorite show of all time is Friends, but I really liked the show "The Class" that was on last year and it already got canceled after just one season. I mean, I do like my fair share of dramas and dramedies, but they need to make more sitcoms to balance it out.

Hmmmm I don't know, I always enjoy watching an episode of Friends but sometimes Grey's Anatomy is a better option. IT really depends= i Love them both.

I don't watch much TV myself...but when I do, dramas only. Sitcoms are too forced to me...I don't go for that kind of humor. I've never been much of a fan.

Dramas - Majority of my favorite shows are dramas...24, Nip/Tuck, Ghost Whisperer, The OC, CSI: Miami, Criminal Intent...

The only sitcom I've ever really taken to is Frasier. I adore him.

I wasn't so sure I would have selected one over the other, but that still of Michael (Steve Carrell) in the Victoria Secret store from the Womens Appreciation Day episode of The Office sealed the deal for me. That was my favorite episode - nay, my favorite tv watching experience - of the season. Done and done.
