Fall Movie Preview: The Westerns

We may not be getting the crisp fall weather just yet, but we are getting previews for tons of movies opening in the fall. In preparation for this autumn and winter at the theaters, I've broken up the lengthy list of upcoming movies into many small themes for my Fall Movie Preview series. This way, you'll be in the know when the chillier months roll around, bringing a whole new crop of new films. Today I'm focusing on a curious surge of new takes on an old genre: the Western.

The Assasination of Jesse James by That Coward Robert Ford
The title kind of says it all, huh? Brad Pitt stars as Jesse James in this story about Robert Ford (Casey Affleck) who "joins Jesse James's gang, only to become resentful of the legendary outlaw and hatch a plan to kill the fastest gun in the West." The trailer on the movie's website doesn't give a whole lot away, but this movie had me at "Western" and "Brad Pitt."

Giddyup! Two more dusty, gritty Westerns when you read more

3:10 to Yuma
If you've been checking Buzz lately you know I'm looking forward to this Western remake that stars Christian Bale, Russell Crowe, Ben Foster and Peter Fonda. In 3:10 to Yuma, "a small-time rancher agrees to hold a captured outlaw who's awaiting a train to go to court in Yuma. A battle of wills ensues as the outlaw tries to psych out the rancher." Check out the tension-filled trailer.

No Country for Old Men
Though this latest Coen Brothers' project didn't take home as many of the accolades it was expected to at Cannes this year, the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. Apparently the film is full of the typical Coen darkness, strangeness and humor, and even the plot description sounds familiar: "Violence and mayhem ensue after a hunter stumbles upon some dead bodies, a stash of heroin and more than $2 million in cash near the Rio Grande." They must be doing something right, though, because critics adore this film, and I can't wait to catch it on the big screen myself.

"Women love horses but hate Westerns." I may make an exception for Brad, but only on DVD.

Brad Pitt does NOT play Robert Ford. He plays Jesse James.

Haha they are going to release the Assasination of Jesse James?! I heard the director wouldn't listen to the studio so they were going to shelve it...they shot it like, 2 years ago.

I just finished reading No Country for Old Men, and I can't wait to see what the Coen brothers do with this amazing novel. Everyone should read it if you haven't already.

Whoo! I'm a total geek for Westerns- give me John Wayne any day of the week. I can't wait for these three, but I'm mostly looking forward to No Country for Old Men. I read the book, and while I didn't LOVE it, I know the Coen brothers are going to rock the material, like they do everything else. I hope this genre makes a big comeback!

These filmmakers are smart, they know women aren't the target audience for westerns and yet they cast Brad Pitt and Christian Bale in them and I'm sold!! Smiling

A new movie from the Coen brothers, great. I watch everything they make. I'm so looking forward to Burn After Reading as well. Laughing out loud

I've seen another trailer for The Assassination of Jesse James (it should be "the Coward" in the title, by the way, not "that") that seriously gave me the chills. It looked dark and cool and I'm not even into westerns.

I have been waiting patiently for TAoJJbtCRF FOREVER!!!

I know there is a major struggle going on between the studio, Pitt and the director as to whether this film should be an action based or character driven movie.. I am with the director and Pitt and say charqacter driven. We have seen a million glossed over bang bang Jesse James movies. Lets see the real man and what happened between him and Ford.

And the studios need to stop hiring people for their "vision" and then completely re-edit a movie based on a test audience that had no idea they were about to wattch a long character based drama set in 1880.

If studios had told test audiences to go f themselves we would have had Blaine chose Duckie in Pretty in Pink and Micheal Douglas go to jail under the false assumption he killed Glen Close in Fatal Attraction.. much better messages.

They stood up to poor audiences returns for Natural Born Killers, Fight Club and Disturbia.. they need to do it more.

i love westerns. factor in brad pitt, christian bale, russell crowe and the coen brothers, and i simply can't wait for these fall movies!

i'm with ima on this: jesse james needs to be character-driven. enough with the overdosing on mindless bang bang shoot 'em up movies.

You actually lost me at Brad Pitt. The other two look interesting, though. I'm going to have to read No Country For Old Men now.

Brad looks so damn hot in the Jesse James movie. He'd been looking haggard before the filming of that movie, but it restored my faith in his looks. LOL.

    But I love westerns!
