Harry Potter & The Order Of The Phoenix: Just What You'd Expect

I feel the need to start off my review of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix with the disclaimer that I am and always have been a fan of the books. As good as the movies are, they will probably never fully capture the wonderful magic of the novels. That being said, the fifth film installment of Harry Potter definitely makes a solid attempt.

The movie takes us back to Hogwarts for year 5, and so begins a much darker time for Harry and the rest of the wizarding world. A war is brewing between good and evil, and the need to take a side is growing imminent. Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) is reunited with his best friends and sidekicks Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson), but the brooding teenager has never felt more alone. To find out why, and more, read more

As the only good wizard who can confirm Lord Voldemort’s return, Harry is constantly faced with opposition from his peers, the particularly awful new Professor Umbridge, and the Ministry of Magic. Umbridge and the Ministry have teamed up to prove that Harry is a fraud and will stop at nothing to assure that all is well at Hogwarts and in the world of magic. Unfortunately, the school begins to crumble under Umbridge’s nauseatingly negligent care while Harry is forced to confront his own inner demons as he struggles to make sense of the connection between himself and the Dark Lord.

The best things about The Order of the Phoenix are the visual effects and the acting. The young actors only get better as they age, and I was particularly impressed with Imelda Staunton as Umbridge and Helena Bonham Carter as the frightening Bellatrix Lestrange. The cinematography is stunning, and the world director David Yates creates for us is almost better than what you’d imagine when you’re reading the book. The magical action sequences are a lot of fun, and there are enough flashes and fireworks to keep kids and adults entertained throughout.

My biggest problem with the film is its lack of emotional depth, although Yates tries his hardest to pack as much teenage angst into Harry as he possibly can. There’s just so much plot to get through that the audience has little time to feel connected Harry's problems. The movie barely scratches the surface of his complicated situation and I couldn’t help but feel a little empty inside, even despite the dazzling visuals. However, I realize the movie is intended to be suitable for kids which means making light of heavier issues, and it does a great job in this category, even injecting a fair amount of comedy into a story that is often very grim.

Overall, I’d say that fans of the Harry Potter mania that has been sweeping the world will enjoy this movie, and be satisfied enough to make the ticket purchase worth it. Whether you’re an avid reader or grew to love Harry in the films, audiences will appreciate a good reason to take a two-hour escape into Harry’s whimsical world.

This was my least favorite book of the series thus far, but I'm glad that they apparently do a decent job of capturing it. I'm really looking forward to seeing the new cast members and hopefully I don't walk away with that empty feeling! I'll probably like it more since it's a little less brooding and I really can't wait to see it!

I have to say that overall, this was my favorite screenplay. This movie really sought to capture a lot of the smaller story-lines that build the books and become important later on, more so than moves three and four. I did have a few problems with the movie, but they were mainly in the minutia and not large missing back stories like the Marauder's Map that didn't get enough time/explanation in Prisoner of Azkaban.

Overall, it made me even more excited for book 7 (which is hard to image...).

Didn't it seem really short? At 2 hours 20 minutes, I feel like they could have really fit a lot more in and not had too terribly long a movie; I wish they'd gone further with all of the new characters, and with the background of the characters we already know, since I felt like that was the emphasis in the book. But I loved it all the same. It did for the series of movies exactly what the fifth book did for the series of books, and that's the important thing.

I saw it last night at midnight and loved it. By far my fave out of all the movies. Some people seemed to be upset that the other characters had smaller roles (like Ron...barely spoke) but I think that the focus is and should be on Harry anyway. Overall really enjoyed the movie.

I went into this thinking it was going to be BAD! I was told it was crap. I went in there and saw the dementor part and was like... here we go again it's the dark gothic Azkaban all over again. I was wrong! This has to be my favorite of the 5 movies. They really did try to get everything they could into it. While changing it here and there to make it a movie for everyone.

I loved Luna! That little girl was SO great! I loved how they made Grawp, him and Herminone were ADORABLE! I cried during the fight and the vail. I tried not to though.

As for things I didn't like... I HATE HATE HATE Michael Gambon as Dumbledore. Dumbledore wouldn't ever say "don't you all have studying to do?!" NEVER! Or how he looks around for apporval after everything he says. No! Dumbledore just knows. As for the fight between him and Voldy I must say the fire and water thing was just dumb. Sure it looked cool but COME ON! Dumbledore was so strong he only had to walk towards Voldy to intimidate him.
Also why no St. Mungo's? And where did all the rooms go!? Nevelle being hit in the nose and talking all 'beird' or Ron and the brains! I would've loved to see that but NO! They walk through the door and look at all these prophicies. ARGH!

However it was better then the last two (not that hard because Azkaban was pure crap! and Goblet; while good still left me wanting to kill Michael Gambon) and the first two are dear to my heart, Chris Columbus did a great job on them. Now though 5 will be my favorite and I will probably see it MANY MANY more times.

Sorry this was so long... I love harry potter! ~*~RIP Sirius~*~

I just got back from the theater and I thought it was pretty good. It irked me how they changed some of the things from the book like the fact that Cho wasn't the one to reveal Dumbledore's Army and the whole scene with Snape worst memory made me a bit sad because I expected more than just a brief flash of the whole thing. I absolutely loved Luna and Tonks and I especially hope Tonks has a bigger role in the next film. Anyways all in all it was good, made me laugh and made me cry. Now I am all excited for the book.

This sounds like a pretty fair review, the books got pretty dense after year one. So, there was so much to cover, probably hard to fit into a 2-hour movie. So, excited!! I love being the dork that I am.

I was so proud of this movie!!!! i am a major harry potter fan and goblet of fire the movie was a disgrace back when it came out.
i was proud of the fact that they included the important details of the book and turned into a very acceptable screenplay. the moments with Sirius and harry built up well to the final scenes.
i was disappointed though at how Sirius died. i mean i understand that in the book it was very quick as well and not drawn out, but i mean there wasn't even a curtain it was this weird archway thing!
the actors did an amazing job, i loved Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix. she made an outstanding performance. I do have to say i was disappointed that Weasey is our King was not at all in the movie but it would have been far too cluttered if it was.
I think out of all the HP movies this one has been the best due to its great acting, good adaptation, and exquisite visual effects.

I'm so happy to hear all of the great reviews of the movie, I'm so excited to see it. I haven't read the books, now don't hate me, but I'm a fan of the movies and I plan on reading the books eventually but haven't gotten around to it, but I'm a huge fan of the movies since the first one. I can't wait to see it now, just can't wait!

I thought the movie was actually quite good. As for Gambon's portrayal of Dumbledore, he was actually spot on. He didn't look around for "approval", he looked around to see who was listening and what the reactions were to his statements and actions. Dumbledore listens, looks, and studies people. I do wish that key plot elements weren't passed by in earlier films that are important in the later books, which is probably my biggest complaint about the films, but they all have the approval of JK Rowling.

i definitely agree with the lack of emotional depth...the movie was definitely not as dark as the book is supposed to be and harry's would-be teenage angst is largely hindered because he is given a lot of explanations early in the movie that he wasn't given in the book so it's like he doesn't have as much reason to be angry. and snape is NOT supposed to be so nice to harry! the casting was AMAZING though... tonks, luna, bellatrix and umbridge were FABULOUS. who knew i would enjoy umbridge's character so much?

I saw this at midnight and I thought it was pretty well done. I think they could have added a couple things, but I was pretty pleased. I love Gary Oldman as Sirius and Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix, I just wish that all of the amazing adult actors had bigger roles but then I guess the movie would be like 6 hours long. I also wanted them to address the part where Sirius called Harry "James" near the end but oh well. The books are obviously still better than the movies though.

Just got back to the movies in time to watch So You Think You Can Dance and I agree they should have addressed the part where Sirius called Harry "James." I also wanted them to go further with the storyline about Snape being bullied by Harry's father and how Harry feels about that and did his feelings changed about his father? After seeing the movie with my little brother and little cousin my brother suggest reading the books if I wanted more explanation so that I will do.

But I have a question who is Tonk?

First off,I think they did an AMAZING job with the special effects and visuals in the movie! But other than that, I was not very impressed. The movie seemed to jump around a lot, and if I hadn't read the book, I think I would have been completely lost. The movie also left out so many important events! Apart from the lack of emphasis on Snape's memory, they left out Hermione and Ron becoming prefects, basically all of Harry's emotional trauma, Fred and George getting kicked out of Hogwarts, and one of the most interesting things in the book to me, the fact that the prophecy could have had been about Neville but Voldemort chose to believe Harry was the only person it could have been about. Although the movie was already two hours and twenty minutes, I think they could have added more to the plot and thus made the movie piece together and more enjoyable.

i saw the movie!!!! ummmmm i realize that movies and books are different mediums so they have to be different. i liked a lot of the elements used in the movie to convey the story but was disappointed that a lot of my fave parts from the book never made it on screen. Sad better than goblet of fire though (way too rushed and not super universal as it was a movie made for people who had read the books)

this was my favorite of the 5 movies! i saw it in imax 3d and the whole "climax" was so amazing as it was all in 3d! this is the most visually beautiful of the movies, it think. i loved not seeing so mch of draco malfoy as i dislike that part of the books/movies. i thought it seemed short though, and that they spent too much time on the dumbledore's army bit and not on other things like the major love stories that go on, and the OWLs which are a major part of the 5th year and the book... harry keeps wondering what to do with his life in a way and decides ot try to be an orrator (sp?) and take the apropriate courses to do so. yeah, anyway - i love this movie and can't wait to see it again! this is a good movie in that you don't have to have read the book to get it and enjoy it because of all the visuals and such. oh...also, i wish they'd spent more time on the order of the phoenix. most members weren't even introduced/mentioned (their names and importance etc).

Saw the movie at the midnight opening. I completely agree with your review. From Year 4 (Goblet) on through Year 7 (Deathly Hallows), I think that if anyone wants to truly appreciate the films, you MUST read the books. Otherwise, you are going to be LOST.

That being said, the new movie is wonderful as a film version of that HUGE book. The young actors do their best work (and Evanna Lynch IS Luna Lovegood!).

The books are just, well, the books. There is no comparison. I sobbed through the entire OOP, so I wish the movie brought in a little more of Harry's alienation (and anger) during the summer and at Hogwarts, the intense fear looming at the OOP that Voldemort is strengthening, and Harry's DEVASTATION at his godfather's death. I also did miss at least a little bit of "Weasley is our king," (which does appear as a passing comment in the Wii "Order of the Phoenix" game!) Hogwart's always needs a little Quidditch!

Finally, I have always pictured a young version of Helena Bonham Carter as Tonks, so I love seeing her in the film series as Bellatrix.

So, for complaints, it's mostly the small stuff that's missing. But I've been trying to take the films for what the are - because they can't get everything from the books in there. The majority of the important HP moments are.

However, if Arnold the Pygmy Puff isn't in the film for Half-Blood Prince, I will be very mad!!!

I think it's not a children's book/film anymore since 'the prisoner of azkaban', it started to get too heavy and dark. On the other hand, daniel/harry used to be an emo wizard kid, now I wanna do him Drool!
he's like shazam!!!! he can use his magic wand on me anytime.
but besides THAT I don't feel the urge to watch the movies anymore, a bit too well...dark as I said, it's no fun anymore. when J.K started to get popular and films were made, the books started too get serious, you know? big business, ca-ching and she lost that childlike thing. i regret it, but it's her choice Smiling
