Pushing Daisies Rundown: Episode Two, "Circus Circus"

Pushing Daisies usually manages to make morbid things seem sweet, so it's interesting to see the show take happy things and make them sad. This week, Ned and Emerson investigate a crime at the world's biggest bummer of a circus and Ned faces the idea that Chuck's independent new beginning means the end of something wonderful. To talk about it, just read more.

  • This episode starts on a bummer of a note, with little Ned (and his little hobo sack) trying to do a good deed but killing a whole class project in the meantime. No wonder Ned hates new beginnings; thanks to his power, "starting fresh means that something else is ending stale."
  • Present-day Ned isn't having an easy go of things either, not with Chuck living next door — so close, yet so far. I love the scene in the Pie Hole with Ned constantly checking over his shoulder. Is Olive back? Are the aunts? Either of those things would be bad, but they'd also mean Chuck has to retreat to living with him.
  • Emerson, meanwhile, finds special meaning in the case of a teenage girl who's run away. I love Rachael Harris, and she's deadpan-perfect here, talking flatly about wearing her emotions like a shiny brooch.
  • Nikki's friend's speech about her mind being like an abandoned refrigerator made me think of that very special Punky Brewster episode about CPR, and don't pretend you don't know what I'm talking about.
  • Speaking of which, it's so wonderful to see Chuck contribute to an investigation. She really is good at getting people to say things they shouldn't be saying, and that interrogation scene is a great parallel to the one between Olive and Lily later on.
  • So, A Circus of Fun is pretty much the worst circus ever, no? It's got jugglers and one occasionally murderous human cannonball, but it's also got labor disputes and smells like "sawdust and underarms."
  • I wonder how many times it took Anna Friel to perfect the dive over the Pie Hole counter. It was pretty obvious that as soon as she was left alone, Vivian would show up, but their scene together was so sweet, with Chuck hiding but still managing to produce a tear-seasoned triple-berry pie.
  • Anytime I get sad from now on, I'm just going to think about clown with the looooooooooooooong legs. (Second-best sight gag of the night: Ned getting cut off mid-vulgar tirade by a fire blower.)
  • Thank you, Emerson: "It's a traveling circus, not a 'wait around for the two of you to work all your junk out' circus."
  • Also, Ned to Emerson: "Generally speaking, you don't even have a glass. You have a wet ring on the coffee table where the glass used to be."
  • I couldn't stop laughing at all of the scenes with the newly found Nikki wearing that stuffed animal costume: "You won me a prize!"
  • Emerson has a good message for us all: "Love what's there. Love it."
  • Line of the night: a close call between "Pigby enjoyed the warbling sounds that the nice-smelling thing that fed him made" and "I could throw up in my mouth a little and not even know the difference."

So, Ned and Chuck are starting fresh by pretending they just met cute in the hall, Lily's stashing liquor at the nunnery, and Chuck's family tree is still way confusing. And next week, we murder a nun! What are you thinking about Daisies this season? And what limerick would you make up about Bryce Von Deenis?

I just realized with this episode one of the ways that the budget cuts would affect the show: no more of Chuck's fab outfits. Some of her dresses and shoes last season would make the women from Mad Men jealous. And her hats! I'll miss her wardrobe.

I especially loved Lily trying to convince Olive she had lied to her.

I agree Keiren63, Chuck's outfits seemed to be lagging a bit. I loved her dresses!

Lee Pace is just too cute! My hubby reminds me of him. That smile! *melts*

Seriously, guys, tell all your friends! Ratings were dismal this week (5.5 million) . . . I'm getting nervous.

So I watched my first episode of Pushing Daisies yesterday, and can I say I'm officially in love. Normally I watch ANTM at that time, but I might be making a permanent switch. Hopefully I didn't discover it too late!

Not a big fan of Chuck´s clothes this episode, but that´s a minor detail.

I promoted this show to all my livejournal friends! I wish I could be a part of the ratings but we don't get ABC =[ We only get NBC and CBS and the CW kind of. I guess I could turn my TV to ABC and leave it on even if I don't get a picture!

I'm sorry to hear about the low-ratings Sad. What are this Nielson homes doing...UGH.

I really enjoyed last nights episode (as I always do). Ned is absolutely adorable. I loved his conversation with Emerson when Emerson admitted to his daughter "running away".

As a mystery lover, this show really opens up brand new doors for the genre. I sure hope it stays around. Probably the most feel-good scripted show out there for Prime Time.

I've been trying to tell people to watch this show! Unfortunately, I didn't think last night's episode was that great Sad It was actually kinda depressing although there were a couple of parts that made me laugh like Olive saying to Lily "You hid booze in your Bible!" and Ned talking to Emerson about the inventions that he has constructed with Chuck to...uhhh..find a way around the whole "not able to have sex" problem. Did anyone else see that part? It was funny, but it made me embarassed at the same time. My mind hurts to think about it.

Anyway, Chuck's wardrobe is not as cute as it once was, and the special effects weren't so good either. Next week's episode looks better though!

This was a great episode. I loved the bit with all of the clowns coming out of the car. Too funny. And then the moment w/ Chuck hiding behind the counter and disguising her voice so Vivian wouldn't know it was her...so cute. I'm going to be heart broken if this show is cancelled. I got a few people watching it last year, I guess I'll have to make sure they are still watching!

Oh and I agree about Chuck's outfits. Normally I covet them, but a lot of the time last night she looked ridiculous. What was up w/ those brightly colored high-waisted pants???

Yeah, I also think that this wasn't my favorite episode. But it's still one of my favorite shows, so I'm going to keep watching! (Last night I tried to make a point of tuning in during showtime so I could get counted in the ratings, but alas, I had to play "soccer mom" with my hubby's grad school buddies & got home RIGHT after it ended. Thank goodness for DVR!)

This show is honestly the best...but as for the ratings, do they include Tivo/DVR when determining the numbers?

I normally don't watch a lot of tv, but I caught last week's episode and couldn't wait to see this week's. I really like this show! I even set my tivo to pick up the rest of the season.

DVR ratings are being processed more and more often, but they don't count in the morning-after ratings results — and what's a bigger deal is that they don't typically count for advertisers, either, because the presumption is that people watching via DVR fast-forward through the ads.

Another important thing to remember is that ratings are based on a random sample of households — not everyone (or even close to everyone) gets measured. It's an imperfect system for sure, but for now, it's what's used to get advertising, and advertising makes the TV world go 'round ...

I made sure to watch last night, rather than DVR it. I LOVED the 15 dead clowns!! I'm scared of clowns and the fact that 15 of them died made me more happy than I should have been!

I was struck dead with horror during Lily's monologue...I was hoping that Chuck didn't turn out to be Ned's sister or something, that would be way too messed up! (I think I've been watching too much Gossip Girl...)

And a P.S. Just how old is Emerson Cod's daughter? I was wondering if she was that Mormon's wife (that one of four) since the actress is going to be showing up again in a later episode...
