Pushing Daisies Rundown: Episode One, "Bzzzzzzzzz"

Oh, joy! Pushing Daisies is back! And it seems to have returned perfectly in form, too, with a premiere that finds Chuck putting her love of bees to use, Olive letting secrets get the best of her, and the introduction of a pig named Pigby. I wish I could just scoop this show up into a big bear hug.

If you missed the first season, the first five or so minutes of this one would get you caught up right quick, as we zoom through a quickie explanation of Ned's powers and Chuck's resurrection. But the good stuff starts with Chuck's dead bees, so to talk about it, just read more.

  • Chuck bringing her bees back to life by dumping them over Ned's bare back might be one of the best visual effects this show has done. I love how Chuck decided it would only be fair to strip down to her silky unmentionables to balance things out.
  • Speaking of which, Chuck and Ned appear to have a relatively normal romance — as long as they both wear bells on their slippers and only touch with the help of Ned's Digby scratcher.
  • This week's victim is Kentucky Fitz, who had just been tapped as the face of Betty's Bees, a honey-based business that recently sold out to a big conglomerate that wanted to strip the products of their honey ("even the honey!") (sound familiar?). I'm already a little bee-phobic, so that shot of Kentucky in the morgue with bees spewing out of her mouth made me shiver.
  • I guess we're not worried about Chuck being recognized in public anymore, because she poses as Kitty Pims to get in with the bee people. So many great visual gags in those scenes, including the beehive dome, the honeycomb-tiled floors, and Chuck's pin-turned-microphone that's a direct line to an eavesdropping Emerson.
  • Maybe my favorite line of the night, after Chuck protests that Betty was too young to be replaced at just 38: "Which rounds up to 40, which rounds up to 50, which rounds up to old!"
  • The aunts are out of the house, fulfilling Chuck's goal from when she started sneaking happy drops into their pies but creating drama for everyone else. Their appearance at the Pie Hole sends Olive into a fit, since she's become the dumping ground for everyone's secrets and now feels like a gun stuffed with "truth buckshot." I know Kristin Chenoweth can sing, but man, that lady can also scream.
  • It seems appropriate that Chuck's having a (re)existential crisis: "I haven't gone anywhere with my life, and this is my second one!" Once Olive's off to the nunnery, Chuck takes over her apartment, thus beginning Chuck and Ned's "Parisian lifestyle."
  • Love Olive's mixup between "the porter" and "the poor."
  • Chuck's dad was Vivian's fiance? I'm going to need a genealogist to document this family tree.
  • The crew figures out the murder, but not before Chuck finds herself dressed head to toe in bees. Ned quickly reminds her she can get dead again: "There's a reason I don't let Digby play in traffic."
  • OK, scratch everything I said before. My actual favorite line: "You want a drink? Lily, hand me your purse." Runner-up: "But it's also sweet, like a taxidermied pet, or stuffing someone's ashes in a teddy bear."

So, Olive's living simply at the place where Lily sneaked off to have Chuck, Ned has (somehow?) rescued Chuck's special pillow, and Emerson's adorable Lil' Gumshoe has been put into the world to help his daughter find her way back. There's nothing left to say but "Aww!" What did you all think?

The ratings were only 6 mil. =[ Hopefully some other shows flop! I really don't like Lilly. I haven't since the show started. I did enjoy the almost naked Lee Pace! Mmmmmm I think that makes up for there being no Office tonight!

Oh and I'm REALLY glad to see this show back. It's got at least 12 episodes this season!

Ugh, I am so bummed about the ratings. I was hoping for at least 8 million, 10 if we got lucky . . .

I know =[ but it's got a crappy pairing with Private Practice. It needs a better lead in and some more advertising! I say we just put the pictures of Lee in his boxers everywhere! That'll get more women to watch at least!

Those rating numbers makes me so sad. Especially since this is the one show I'VE been heavily anticipating the return of. And I was not let down last night.

And I absolutely loved the guest appearance of Missi Pyle. Her face is always so animated!!! I just :heart her

Pushing Daisies is the leading show of Wednesday nights. I like Private Practice, but I don't think it fits with the whimsical (Pushing Daisies) and fanciful (Dirty, Sexy, Money) block the ABC has going on.

LOVED the show! My favorite line of the night was I'm telling you and you and you and your hump from Olive. I think she had all the best lines of the night!

Overall I loved it! But I couldn't remember one thing--I thought at the end of the last season Chuck was mad about Ned killing her dad. Am I forgetting an episode--did they get over this!

I also loved the end when he had all her things at the new place--but it's sad--they should have left that empty for Olive!

That confused me too! She ran away and she was furious with Ned! What happened?

Welcome to Post Writers Strike Jump the Shark Season Premiers.

At the end of Chuck, Chuck was seen about to leave his friends and family b/c he was too dangerous for them and be put in an NSA holding cell.

Olive's convent looked like a cross between the "Sound of Music" abbey, and the "Black Narcissus" convent!

I am SO happy to have this show back. My husband prefers Chuck, so we watched that first (TIVO) then this...42 mnutes of irritation, followed by 42 minutes of pure happy. Please let this be a good world where we get this show for many seasons to come!

If I remember correctly, Chuck forgave Ned on the season finale. They reconcile at the Windmill House (at least I think).

I was a bit confused too but I remember in the last episode they sat by Chuck's dad's grave together (silently). I'm thinking that solved everything(?)

    Pleaseeeee don't cancel this show.

I was hoping for better ratings...shoot.

This is a show that puts a smile on my face from start to finish.

The scenery/colors, the cast and the script...all so amazing.

I love Emerson's dialogue. He has some great lines.

I would be heartbroken if it was cancelled. I think it needs more promotion.

I love this show too. Its like a bedtime story for adults. I hope to god they don't cancel it!

I got the impression though (no idea where from) that Chuck's dad was the brother of her aunts. I just assumed that he stepped in the raise his sister's baby. I could be wrong though...

It would be beyond tragic if something happens to this show. I will start a one woman effort to pull a Jericho and start sending ABC pies. Like Buzz (ha your name is so appropriate right now!) said, I just want to pinch the show's cheeks. Lee Pace is all kinds of adorable and I had forgotten how funny Emerson can be Smiling.

Private Practice afterwards was another story... That show is horrible and definitely would NOT have survived if not for the writer's strike. They need to ax it and bring Addison back to Grey's. Not to mention getting it the heck away from Pushing Daisies. I think they should put Pushing Daisies w/ comedies. Like maybe pair it w/ Samantha Who? and something else. Clearly I should be a tv executive.

Oooooo! Put it w/ Eli Stone! That would be perfect. Samantha Who?, one other 1/2 hour comedy (Scrubs???!???), Pushing Daisies then Eli Stone. That would be PERFECT.

I'm so glad this is back! I'm afraid I contributed to the low ratings though... "Bones" was on FOX at the same time, so I elected to DVR "Pushing Daisies" & watch it after "Bones." Not next week!

So happy this show is back; and I think I may need to start enjoying a slice of pie every Wednesday evening to accompany it. I loved Ned's line, "If I could breathe, I think I might vomit!"

But I'm totally confused on the whole Chuck's parents ordeal. Ok, so Lily and Vivian are her aunts...I always assumed on her "mom's" side until we found out who her real mom is. So if Lily is Chuck's mother, then who does Vivian THINK Chuck's mother is? My mind keeps circling around on this and coming up with naught. Any thoughts?

I had to work last night (missed three shows! But that left lots of goodies for today, what with no Grey's and all) so I watched online today - I almost forgot how amazing this show was! It makes me so happy. I need to rewatch the first season just for fun. Also, I love the fact that the narrator (Jim Dale) also did the readings for the Harry Potter books on tape (yes I have a few of those, lol). I'm also loving how the feel of this show is so very much like Amelie - one of my favoritest movies.

And lastly, Lee Pace + boxers = yum. Better than pie.

I completely missed out on season one,
even though I'd always wanted to watch.
After watching the sneak peek of the season premiere,
    I had to watch.
And it has become one of my top 5 favorites just in watching one episode.
    It's so spectacular,
there is nothing else like it on TV.
I'm in love with Lee Pace already. haha.

So...I will be buying season one on DVD this week.

this is just such a sweet and funny show Smiling I really hope it stays on. Visually there is just nothing else on TV like it. Kristin Chenoweth was particularly hysterical in the convent scenes. The 'poor' hauling away her sofa made me laugh out loud.
