Grey's Anatomy Rundown: Episodes One and Two, "Dream a Little Dream of Me"

Grey's Anatomy pulled out all the stops for its season premiere on Thursday, with a two-hour episode that seemed at times to be atoning for the show's previous sins. It's packed with romance, dream sequences, and a scene that will make it impossible for me to ever look at icicles in the same way, so to talk about it, just read more.

The fairytale — Can fairytales come true, and would you even want them to? That's the central question of this episode, which finds the doctors treating three "aging princesses" and their three husbands, who were on their way to a ball in a Seattle freak snowstorm when both of their limos crashed. One is having an affair with her best friend's husband, which leads Meredith to question (and question, and question) her decision to move in with Derek. One has a spinal injury that needs a revolutionary treatment, which leads Callie and Erica to muse about trying something new. And one is left with a memory that resets every 30 seconds, meaning her friends have to tell her over and over again that her husband has died — until Izzie realizes she can lie and tell her that her husband is right around the corner. It's a sweet but painful moment, made sweeter/more painful by Izzie's own fantasy version of her story with Denny. Man, every time he shows up, I feel so emotionally manipulated, but it always works.

The icicle — Ack! OK, I don't know why it was snowing in September in Seattle, other than to give us that moment where the icicle stabs Cristina. That story ends up delivering two of my favorite scenes: Cristina imagining herself and Mere as old ladies eating a chicken while wearing what was apparently the world's worst old makeup, and Cristina making out with Dr. McArmy, who's kind of her new rough-and-tumble surgical idol. Cristina got a lot of interesting stuff this episode, actually, between the kiss and her realization that as much as she knows, it's not nearly good enough.

The meta stuff — Seattle Grace has fallen from second in the surgical rankings to 12th — which, as this guy points out, is the approximate trajectory of Grey's in the ratings. Cristina repeatedly tells Meredith to shut up. George says he made a lot of mistakes, but he's trying to do better. Whether intentional or not, all those things certainly seem like commentary on the show itself, and they gave me some of the biggest chuckles of the night.

Some other thoughts:

  • Lexie loves George! And, in true Grey-family fashion, she can't tell him. Her little whispered "I adore you, by the way" was cute, but I really like how this is setting up a fun relationship between Lexie and Mark.
  • Speaking of Mark, his description of his teaching methods: "I'm like a guru. They come to me for help and I gently guide them along the path to truth and wisdom."
  • I'm still getting used to the idea of Callie and Erica together, but it's interesting that Erica has also never kissed a woman before. I think I like that they're new to this together.
  • Meredith on Derek moving in: "He's got fishing gear. And boots. And hair products."
  • So Rose is kind of a crazy, but not as much as I feared they'd make her. Nonetheless, glad she's gone.
  • Anyone in the medical field want to explain to me what the surgical rankings and the level of a hospital's trauma center have to do with each other?

So, what did you think? Is it "a mistake of massive proportions" for Mere and Derek to move in together, or is it about time? Why does Alex always make himself such a jerk in the end? And who else's heart fluttered at the sight of Denny Duquette?

I was a little underwhelmed...Grey's used to make me cry almost every epsiode... (not that its a good thing but I am just saying it have riveting story lines..). I felt a little mainpulated because of the Derek getting hurt dream sequence and the Rose being preggers gag being on the promo. At any rate ...new Army Doc is HOT. I hope he stays around (though I think that has been confirmed he will be around for a little while).

I started crying when I saw Denny. Such a sweet moment. I wasn't crazy about last nights episode. I really didn't understand why it was snowing in September either. As far as Mer and Der...nothing special like you were hoping for after the season finale. I hope this season gets better.

The scene with Christina and the icicle and the "shut up" speech was sooo fantastic! I practically cheered when she told Meredith to keep it to herself when and if she decided to figure things out.

I totally felt manipulated when Derek "died" in the beginning of the episode. I was just sitting there with my mouth open going "it's gotta be a dream sequence, right?"

Great episode overall I thought. I'm glad that Grey's is getting better, even if it was a little slow to do so.

I need Dr. McArmy to remain stationed at Seattle Grace Hospital ASAP!!! My heart totally went AWOL when he was stapling himself!!! This guy just adds so much excitment (and manjoyment)!!!

I truly enjoyed this episode, though it was A LOT to digest.

I am not in the medical field, but I'm assuming that the Seattle Grace Hospital city rival ranked higher as a surgical teaching center and is now the one being "awarded" the Trauma 1 crown. Better teaching = Better Treatment and Percentage of Survival. At least that's my thoughts on it.

I think that was just the Grey's writers taking liberties. Trauma levels are verified by the American College of Surgeons and have very, very specific criteria. Teaching hospital rankings are like college rankings -- they're lots of different lists, all using different criteria. Also, the characters seemed more concerned with dropping in the hospital rankings than no longer being a Level I trauma center. In the real world, loosing a Level I designation is a *huge*.

There were a lot of tugs on the heartstrings in last nights episode. I just wish Meredith would be with Derek and stop freaking out about it, she was so much less annoying in season 1 when she was at least semi-sane.

I cant wait for the Army guy to come in and start telling people to stop being such babies and save some lives already.

I love Meredith but even I thought she was being whiny this episode. And Rose is crazy & I am SO glad she's gone for good. Love the army guy. He should def come back as a series regular. He's awesome. Totally thought the icicle stabbing Christina was a joke, but the symbolism works. The patients storylines got confusing for me, though. I couldn't keep them straight. Enjoyed Mark & Lexie's banter, but wish he would have bantered with someone else. I've been waiting to see that side of Mark for awhile and I kind of like Lexie, but not completely. I like her with George. And I was happy Derek made the Chief shut up when he was yelling at Meredith. The Chief was kind of annoying the whole episode.

I think I enjoyed this episode. It was kind of slow but it seems like Grey's is getting back on track since last season [save the last few episodes] was awful. I don't think the 'old lady' make-up was awful. The Callie/Hahn thing makes me gag. Mostly because I don't like Hahn. I think McSteamy needs a love interest now. I miss Kate Walsh! I loved McArmy but he'd be hotter out of uniform. He and Yang are amazing together! So much better than Burk [gag!].

Does anyone know what song played towards the end. It went 'I'm not a princess this isn't a fairytale' or something like that. It was a country song.

I am glad Rose is gone.

Didn't like how they made Callie so unsure. She is never like that. I get that she is "unsure" now because of Erica, but even with George, she was still kicking *ss with her surgeries, so I like her more decisive.

Loved when Lexie said the "adore" thing. So cute.

I was glad they finally just lied to their friend, as well.

I also loved when Meredith said "I'm not going to say that you deserved that, but you deserved that." LOL

Not sure about Army Guy. Glad Cristina got some action though, she was overdue.

Loved the dream sequence of old Mere & Christina...I thought it was cute!

Why hasn't Mere been in therapy this entire time?? She's got soo many issues...the only way her & Derek are going to work out is if she continues dealing w/ her demons that constantly make her second guess herself.

Yay for McArmy (Kevin McKidd from ROME and JourneyMan). He is fantastic and I am so glad to see him back on tv. It will be interesting to see him romancing Cristina but also butting heads with Derek. That will make for awkward double-dates!
I was annoyed by a lot of the episode though. This whole ranking thing put everyone's egos front and center and I don't like where this is going this year. Is it all going to be about moving up in those darn rankings?
Please, no annoying Lexie fooling around with Mark!!! They've got to give him something/someone, but not this one
This Callie and Erica situation is so odd and I am curious how they are going to work with this.
I found myself bored a lot last night. Let's hope it gets better.

"And, who else's heart fluttered at the sight of Denny Duquette?" Add me to the list! My husband just laughed when I commented about how I never get tired of seeing him, even if I have to put up with Izzie's dreams. Actually, even she wasn't as annoying as she has been in the past; and Christine, as always, was wonderful. The addition of McArmy to the group is brilliant. Overall, I thought last night's episode was one of the better two hour Grey's extravaganzas. As always, great recap, Buzz!

well i think that they really did try to do a lot with the premier and overall i think that it was successful. i can't say that it was the best episode but it does set the season up to be rather eventful.

i like that with the spinal injury thing - they did what was done to the football player and it was successful - at least we know that it's realistic - since a lot of what htey do on the show isn;t

what about the whole brain surgery thing that mer and der were doing last season? don't you think that it would have kept their ranking up for surgeries? i think that with all the far fetched things that they've done - it should have stood for something. and seeing as how they supposedly had some of the BEST drs on staff - mcdreamy, erica - i don't know - it's just not jiving for me.

i can't wait to see what happens with dr mcarmy - he's a cutie and i think that he'll bring a new level of fun to the show.

Was it just me or did Grey's completely jump the shark last night? I mean I know it's not all that realistic but come on she fell right when an icicle jumped into her stomach? Seriously? Then 2 limos crashed and they were husband and wives. And really?? The guys insurance expired at midnight? Really? Come on Grey's we deserve better than that. If Merideth takes back wanting to live with Derek I quit watching. Is it really going to be another season of I like him, no I don't, yes I do, no I don't???

McArmy is freaking hot though and I hope he's around more often! Izzy and Alex are going to hook up. Anyone else see that coming?

jxb, I see it coming like a freight train. Alex/Izzy is sort of a given. They're going to be the new Mer/Der because I firmly believe Mer/Der are going to get a full season of together before they're not again. LOL

I too thought the Rose pregnancy prank was a bit of a cheap shot to show in the promos. I did like the Derek dying in the beginning though because MOST seasons have started out with SOME sort of fantasy sequence from the season before, so I was actually expecting something like that.

I was a bit sick of Merediths narcissism by the end of the episode though. I was all "Bi**h please!" LOL

And someone tell me why, when they saw the icicle cracking and had plenty of time, didn't Christina roll away from that spot? That was a little too convenient.

With most other TV programs, when the hour is up I'm left going "But... But... But... I WANT MORE!" One thing I've always loved about Grey's is they seem to fit SO MUCH into each episode I don't feel cheated when the hour is up (OR in this case 2 hours). I kept thinking, "Oh this episode is going to end soon and I'm not going to have the answers I want!" and then I'd look at the clock and see there was still LOTS of time before the end of the episode! I love that about this show. I just hate when the hour seems to "fly" by because Thursday nights are the one night a week that from 8pm to 11pm no one bugs me. I have other shows I watch, but usually I try to do other things while I'm watching. However with my UB, Grey's and (Used to be on) October Road. I never missed those and always watched beginning to end. I want that time to last! LOL With all that's going on in my life, I like to have those hours of uninterrupted mindlessness. LOL

ummm.. i felt a lil underwhelmed by this episode.. like above - i used to cry sometimes from their story lines.. but not lately - and it's been like this since last season..
    here's what i liked:
    1. denny!!! awwww.. tear. i swear my heart always skips a beat when i see him.. lol
    2. christina yelling at meredith enough!
    3. that rose girl leaving! goodbye!
    4. mmmm...the new army doctor..

    here's what i didn't like:
    1. ugh - meredith talking/whining/being annoying by talking way too much about derrick(sp?).
    2. rose... why all of a sudden was she super rude and unprofessional in the operation room? and that lame joke of her being pregnant - it just made her look a lil psycho right there for me..
    3. alex being the same typical jerk at the end.. we get it? couldn't he have changed - this one time around?
    4. the story between all the victims...i wasn't really feeling it..
    5. i kind of didn't like the speech made by the chief at the end - but at the same time - i think your right buzz in that - there were certain moments - that it seemed the speeches were more for the audience members saying things will change.. so i'll let this one pass... for now..

I don't think that Grey's can ever win. There will always be people saying it's not good enough/boring/jumping the shark/irritating/etc. I'm a huge Grey's fan, but I watch it for mindless entertainment... It's TV. Not a movie out for an Oscar. I just hate how people pick apart every single episode- why watch if you are just out to not enjoy it?

That rant stepping aside, I really loved the episode. I teared up at several parts and thought they did a good job on bringing it back for the season. And here's to more McArmy!

I thought the dream sequence at the beginning was almost a nod to what everyone said after the season finale of last season- so they're together, now what's going to happen? If you go back to Buzz's recap of the last episode of last season we were all expecting some sort of car accident! I thought that was rather clever!

The Rose pregnancy line was such a cheap shot, though. There's no reason to do that stuff just for the promos- it's the season premiere, we're all going to watch! I just don't get why everything on Grey's lately has to be such an event- look at next week's episode where it looks like the roof collapses or something.

I'm also beginning to tire of everything with the patients being a metaphor for the doctor's life. I usually don't realize how blatant it all is until reading write ups the next day and it's just so annoying. Why can't anything just happen and not be a metaphor?

I still always marvel at how the show can make you care for characters (the patients) in just one hour, though. It's still got it in that regard. And I got all choked up when I saw Denny- I feel the same way as Buzz, emotionally manipulated, but it works.

I was really disliking Grey's Anatomy until the last few episodes last season and I'm happy they're back on track.

As someone who was really excited about the Eric/Callie relationship I was really disappointed by the lack of air time and indecision their part. I get that things would be a little awkward, but they could have made it awkward cute, especially when you consider that they were sober and had an entire evening (at least) to talk about it.

I really love Dr. McArmy. Loved him in Rome and he'll be great here. He has similar command traits to Cristina's ex, but his personality is in the whole other direction and I like that. I hope they sort of keep him to her and don't wh*re him out =) to the rest of the hospital. I also think he'll add some "reality" to the hospital. Everyone there, especially Cristina, is working toward some long term goal.

I'm glad she told Meredith to shut up. Meredith needs to realize that nothing perfect or sure and that she's going to sabotage all her long term relationships if she keeps adding these unrealistic expectations to them. I wish what she would learn is that even if your relationship ends 40 years from now the experience could still be worth it.

They could have let Alex grow as a person.
The pregnant Rose thing was a cheap shot.
Lexie and George could be cute.
I liked the speech at the end when the Chief finally responsibility.

It's not so funny to have Snow in Washington in late September. It happens. Believe me, I've lived here my whole life, and while yes, it's rare, it's happened. Heck, we had snow in MAY a couple of years ago. So while a little far-fetched, it's not completely out of the question.

My favorite scne: Izzie's dream sequence of Denny. I started crying. The writers made a BIG mistake killing him off so soon, they should have kept him on for a couple more seasons at least.

I like that its Callie and Erica's first experiences at being lesbians, although Erica seems like she has been a long-time lesbian. I think this couple is slowly growing on me.

I like Lexie and George. I think they could actually be good together.

Oooh the military doctor is really hot. He's so great and take-charge. I like his chemistry with Cristina.

The icicle thing was soooo random. Couldn't Cristina just move slightly out of the way to avoid it? I know her back hurt, but she knew it was coming.

Alex/Izzie are just meh. She has more chemistry with dead Denny.

I thought for sure that Derek was going to get in a car crash after he left Meredith with all of the candles, but thank God it turned out to be a dream sequence.

The medical case this week was incredibly depressing. It was just a lose-lose situation.

I was seriously underwhelmed by this episode. At one point, I was so bored, I *swore* it had to be
