Johnny Depp to Play Mad Hatter in Burton's Wonderland

Disney has formally announced today that the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland movie will be played by Johnny Depp (of course!). The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop:

Depp and Burton. . . have formed one of the longest-running director-actor partnerships in modern Hollywood. And so when Burton committed to filming a new live-action/CG version of Alice, Depp was touted as the most likely candidate to play the Mad Hatter — after all, having worked with Burton on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, he's practiced in wearing a top hat.

We also have a Tweedledee and Tweedledum — er, we have a Tweedle. Matt Lucas will play both Tweedledee and Tweedledum.

The Johnny Depp news is no surprise, really, but it's exciting to know that it's a done deal! I wonder if the next announcement will be that Helena Bonham Carter is the Queen of Hearts?

Matt Lucas is brilliant casting for Tweedles Dee and Dum. I just hope that Johnny Depp's performance won't be anything like Willy Wonka. Alice is near and dear to my heart--so Tim Burton, please don't screw this up!

I'm with girlnone - could be amazing, as long as it's not like Wonka, b/c that was creepy.

OMG i hope they don't screw up this classic! I'm thoroughly excited to see a well-done update, and can only assume Burton will take it to a creepier level since that's what he does best.

regardless of the animated version, i can only hope they stay at least remotely true to the original story. i know someone joked earlier about Helena being the Queen of Hearts - but I think she would be BRILLIANT in the role!

This will be a creepy take on Alice in Wonderland most def. because I expect no less from Burton...don't get your hopes up for something heartwarming and nostalgia inducing...this movie will def. be similar to that of beetle juice and charlie and the chocolate factory. But it's going to be AWESOME I am so excited!

    From the Hollywood Reporter:
A daylong preview of upcoming Disney movies and projects, held Wednesday at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland, ended with a surprise appearance by the actor [Johnny Depp], outfitted as Jack Sparrow, walking onstage to the tune of "The William Tell Overture," the "Lone Ranger" theme.

    I wish I was there!

In addition to this casting, Johnny Depp is going to play Tonto in the Lone Ranger movie, and there will be a FOURTH Pirates fo the Caribbean. Wow the Hollywood reporter has a LOT of casting news right now.

I love Johnny, but Willy Wonka was awful. I hated the whole back story for Wonka and the Ommpa Loompas. Blech, awful and Gene Wilder will forever be Willy Wonka.
That said, I am looking forward to seeing him as the Mad Hatter and Tonto. Smiling

A fourth Pirates? That's a horrible idea. The 3rd one was bad enough.... Johnny, know when to let go!

I LOVED Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Burton version). It was far and away better than the horrible 70's version.

This sounds like fun... although I didn't care for the remake of Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. So, time will tell.

Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter sounds good... but Alice is a story where the most important characters are women! I'm waiting for news on that front.

Yay!! I can't wait for Alice AND Pirates. I think Johnny as Wonka was creepy, but brilliant. Has Burton ever done anything not creepy and brilliant? I don't think so.

The role of Alice is being played by Mia Wasikowska from that show, In Treatment. Buzz posted this news a long time ago...I don't know how I feel about her because I don't watch that show but she doesn't seem as cute as I picture Alice to be.

Johnny is a perfect choice for the Mad Hatter!! I can't wait to see this. Also, I am surprised (but not really) about Pirates 4 - when a franchise makes THAT much money, Disney would of course do anything to keep it going. I agree that they went downhill after #1. Hint to improve the movies: More Johnny, less insanity on the effects and plot. I'd even like to see Keith Richards back as his dad, he was great in that short cameo.

omg. i am overly excited. and by the way... i think johnny did a great job in charlie in the chocolate factory. he just did what tim burton told him to do. tim burton obviously wanted him to be creepy, so he was creepy. and it is not johnny depp's choice to stop making POTC. it is the producer's choice or whatever to keep making them. johnny just keeps playing the part. I LOVE ALL THE POTC MOVIES. i thought they were all great! i cant wait for the movie to come out. but of course they would keep making POTC, disney made so much money. i wouldnt want to stop making them either, if you make that much money. plus... they were all pretty good. to some people? no. but to me? amazing. I CANT WAIT!
