Grindhouse Loses the Box Office Race

Mediocrity topped curiosity at the box-office this weekend, with two tepidly reviewed holdovers — Blades of Glory and Disney's Meet the Robinsons — landing in the No. 1 and 2 spots with $23 million and $17 million in ticket sales, respectively. Both movies beat out Grindhouse, the groundbreaking double feature directed by Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino, which earned just $11 million.

Grindhouse getting trumped by Blades of Glory doesn't surprise me; after all, it's easier for hordes of movie-going teens to flock to a PG-13 flick than two hard-core R movie. What's tragic is that Grindhouse didn't even manage to win the race against the new Ice Cube movie, Are We Done Yet?, which sounds fairly dreadful. What movies did you guys see this weekend?

I did not get out to the movies this weekend, but I would bet a lot of families went out together, which would make the box office numbers make a little more sense.

It did beat out "The Reaping" which was the only similarly adult-oriented movie opening this week.

(And, I have to admit, I sorta am hoping Will Ferrell movies stop being so popular. The first couple of times it was really funny, but now it's just annoying. And I keep picturing him as either a Spartan cheerleader, or the cowbell guy.)

None of the movies out right now seem very interesting to me.

I guess I think the B horror movie homages have been done to death. I can't stand Tarantino, either. A lot of you seemed to enjoy it, though- maybe I'll watch it when it comes out on dvd.

I loved Planet Terror.. and OH my God.. the trailer for "Don't"! My friends and I were losing it! SO funny. I thought Death Proof was good.. the end was just fantastic, certainly not as full out entertaining as the Planet Terror though. I'd love to see it again, so many funny moments. And I really hope more get out to see this, I'd love to see more installments in the future. Just pure entertainment.

Grindhouse was amazing and worth the 2 for 1. However I'm going with the crowd this time and agreeing that Plant Terror AMAZING. funny, bloody, campy just everything while Feath Proof...the only amazing thing was the stunts and when the driver turned into Sam Jackson on a cussing spree other than that it was another dialogue diatribe..but still better than half of whats out there. Also FINALLY saw the 300. it's no sin city style wise but it was completely fantastic and entertaining. also DAMN fine men all of them.

Finally saw Grindhouse, and I loved it! While Snakes on a Plane wasn't nearly as awesome as this film, the atmosphere in the theaters were the same. People were being loud jackasses, and it did nothing but add to the fun of seeing the movie.

So many people strongly disliked Tarantino's Deathproof, but I thought it was good. I was pretty frustrated at how excrutiatingly slow it built up to the final chase scene, but I suspect that was the point. And oh, what a climax it was!

As for Planet Terror - effing fantastic! Everyone rocked in the film, and it was nice to see Michael Biehn kicking ass again! And, it's nice to see Sayid, er... Naveen Andrews in a meaty role on an American film.

I can't wait to see this again!
