About a year ago, when I first heard about the casting news for The Soloist, I thought it sounded similar to a movie in theaters at the time, Resurrecting the Champ. Both feature a white guy helping an exceptionally talented black homeless guy. So, I created a helpful chart pointing out some of the similarities and differences between the two movies. Resurrecting the Champ didn't do too well in box office sales (approximately $3 million total) and received a so-so critical response.

I'm sure The Soloist will find more success. Though it seems like an extremely familiar story (and not just because of the Champ), it may be aided by its director (Atonement's Joe Wright) and the two acclaimed actors at the center of it all: Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr. In the real life story, RDJ plays journalist Steve Lopez who "discovers Nathaniel Anthony Ayers (Jamie Foxx), a former classical music prodigy, playing his violin on the streets of L.A. As Lopez endeavors to help the homeless man find his way back, a unique friendship is formed, one that transforms both their lives." The drama opens Nov. 21. To check out the trailer, read more.

I can't wait to see this. I love Robert Downey, Jr. It will be nice to see him show off his talents again this year in a different kind of film.

From the opening bars of the aria, I was hooked. I used to play that same one on the cello when I was little. Tears already! It's going to be an amazing film.

well i think that anything with RDJ will get a lot of people out to see it - so i have a feeling that it will see more success than the other one - but who knows. i don't know if it's a story line that i'm really into - but i guess it depends on what else will be out that weekend for me to see

Steve Lopez wrote a series of columns in the LA Times about Ayers. Then he turned the series into a book that was a best seller. Now, it's being turned into a movie. I think that it is a great story, just because the story is similar to the movie the Champ doesn't mean that it's not going to be successful. Lopez has a great following. I love RDJ, he's one of my favorites. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

It looks *great*. Huge fan of RDJ here, so I know I'll like it regardless, but the subject matter makes it extra appealing.

romes — Yes, it's based on the real Steve Lopez and his writings. With the Champ I was merely pointing out similarities between two movies. I'm sure the movie will be successful, and in fact, that's what I said.

I'm super excited for this! As much as I've adored Wright's past work, I don't feel he was the right choice, I mean, he's known for period pieces only. But anyway, I cannot wait to see RDJ in a DRAMA again!
