Last year was supposed to be the big Britney Spears comeback show at the MTV Video Music Awards — but this year marked Britney's real return. Britney won her first VMA (and, before long, her second and third), taking home the moonmen for Best Female Video, Best Pop Video, and Video of the Year for "Piece of Me."

Russell Brand hosted the 25th ceremony, which included today's chart-toppers putting their own spins on classic songs (Katy Perry singing a snippet of "Like a Virgin," etc). While Britney was the night's big winner, others who will need to find a space on their shelves for a moonman include Chris Brown, the Pussycat Dolls, and Tokio Hotel. To see the whole list of winners, just read more.

Yay for Britney!! I was so excited for her.

I was severely disappointed by the awards this year. I had high hopes for Russell Brand because of his part in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, but he really sucked. He kept commenting about the election and the Jonas Brothers! Those jokes got really old maybe by the second time he said something about it. I'm glad Jordin Sparks said something about it!

Overall, the whole thing was terrible. The best performance in my opinion was Lil' Wanye, which was probably the best part of the show. I even sort of liked the beginning of the new Jonas Brothers song, but by the time they got to the rock part it really lost me.

Tonight's VMAs were a bit of a letdown to be honest. I don't think this was Britney's "comeback," but I think she is doing a lot better and she looked really pretty tonight. Russell Brand made me chuckle a few times, but he seemed to make everyone uncomfortable more than anything. The venue sucked this year too, the audience and stage were sooo small.

Britney looked fantastic. It was nice of MTV to give her those awards. Pretty much nothing memorable happened though. I really like Russel, but the audience was not having it, and it made for uncomfortable television.
I thought Jordin's 'slut' comment was a bit b*tchy to be honest. The Jonas Brothers wear their virginity on their fingers, they put it out there... Russel is a comedian, and it was an easy joke.

I say this after pretty much every MTV Award show for the past, oh I don't know, 5 or 6 years, but I really miss when MTV was enjoyable.

i guess i'm the only one who liked them this year... i thought russell was really funny and jordin sparks was just odd. i mean lighten up.

all the performances were great, britney looked fantastic and it seemed like everyone was having a great time. it was a bit short and i do agree the stage was too small but overall i was really happy!!! the past couple have really stunk and this was a welcome change.

ps: twilight fans, when russell cut rob off, were you peeved? i just wanted to slap him and say "let the hot boy speak!!!!"

and the britney and madonna kiss? that sent shockwaves around the world.

the show was a really big disappointment. the whole thing was just boring...
russel brand was funny, a little tooo inappropriate for my taste and i really got sick of him making fun of someone followed by "god bless em" and the jonas brothers jokes got old really fast
i'm happy for britney that she won, she deserved them.

I thought the show was awkward and uncomfortable. I'd never heard of Russell Brand before last night and I was definitely not impressed. Mostly, I just wanted him to shut up!
Loved the performances by Pink, Christina Aguilera, and Lil' Wayne/ T-Pain! I'm glad I sat through that wreck of a show to see them.

Russell Brand was alright. I don't think he was suitable for the MTV audience. I think if he hosted any other event, he would've done just fine. // As for Britney, it's awesome that she was the big winner. But three moon men? That was definitely a shocker.

Britney was surprised she won?? My Ass. MTV considers her their little girl and will never see the wrong in her. They just gave it to her for videos that meant nothing (not like any videos for the past few years have any credibility). I think Christina's performance was cool and Russell Brand was wonderful. I like that he made fun of the Jonas Bros. Not everyone is like OMG JONAS BROS I LOVE YOU!!!

Oh, and Michael Phelps, you are still a jackass. You have the chance to present at MTV and you sound like you are giving a speech in front of your eigth grade class. Ugh, go back in the pool.

i'm soo excited that Britney finally had her success at the VMAs - it's kind of hard for her seeing as how she was on top of her game so many years ago and she never won. this was a great thing to give her more confidence although it would have loved to see her perform.

did anyone catch chris brown laughing or making a face when he didn't win video of the year?

Russell Brand was awesome. I have a new found love for him. I think the 2 of the Jonas Brothers are freakin hot Embarassed but I loved Russell's jokes about them. And Jordan Sparks....um, yeah....judgemental much? Oh! I guess I don't keep up with what the kids are listening as much as I thought I did. I had no idea that Britney song/vid was so popular. Rigged, huh?

I think Britney wins is due to her hardships and a payback for her bad performance of last year. Not for her video.

Agreed Juicylemon---she has had waaaaaay better videos than that!! I think she deserved the trophy many times in the past, but "Piece of Me" really wasn't a good video..meh.

The show really didn't seem that exciting....I was excited to hear Rihanna perform, but I don't think she sounded as good as she usually does live. Also, when Katy Perry was singing 'Like A Virgin', I thought my ears were going to implode!! HORRIBLE!!

I just never really got into the show this year....I will now take solace in my memories of back when I had actually watched all of the nominated videos because MTV used to actually show them!! Ah, those were the days......

I believe they were pity prizes. Her best music and relevance towards pop culture is behind her, and she never won VMAs for any of those times. Still, she has the last laugh this time around.

Britney's wins were out of pity. Which is ridiculous in my opinion. Give it to the artist who actually deserves it. She will always hold a place in my heart, but c'mon. She didn't deserve all 3.

Also, was it just me or was Christina lip-synching? It looked awful. I rather someone SING LIVE than dance.

Rihanna sounded awful. Hated her mullet-esq hair at one point.

Was not WOWED at all this year. Nothing to really discuss. I was more interested in True Blood on HBO.

Everyone wants her to win, so they let her. Who cares?! It's not like its the Emmy's or Oscars. Its 1 step above the Teen Choice Awards. No harm, no foul. I doubt any of these people will "rethink their craft" because they didnt win a VMA.

MTV's parent company, Viacom has MTV listed as "for viewers 12 to 34." Knowing this they still put Russell Brand as the host. Even the first six minutes of his intro are inappropriate for a significant portion of that age range. I am all for free speech, but I am also for my freedom to react to that free speech. If you, like I was, are offended by this and the fact that MTV aired this here are some actions you can take.

Call Sponsors and tell them of your disgust of them sponsoring this:

    Pepsi - 800-433-2652
    Verizon - 908-559-3500

    The FCC:
Some portions of the broadcast, referring to the Jonas bros. bachelor party etc. should be reviewed.
The FCC can be reached at
    http://esupport.fcc.gov/complaints. htm
It takes two minutes to fill out the form.

    Contact the parent company.

Viacom International has already set-up a message line for the VMAs. Viacom's # is 212-258-6000. Tell them you want to lodge a compliant regarding the VMAs.
