What's the Song of Summer 2008?

You know, I'm not gonna lie: kind of a tame Summer for music, don't you think? Not to say that there weren't solid releases from big names, but it's that time of year when everyone seems to be singing the same song ("Umbrella-ella-ella-ella!") and yet I can't seem to find a consensus of what songs are perpetually on the radio, in our heads, or on the dance floor.

But here are the songs that, as far as I can tell, are on heavy rotation right now. You know, the songs that will remind us in the future of that one Summer when every superhero movie ever came out, Mariah Carey got married, and neither Obama nor McCain was president yet.

I was just discussing this with my brother the other day. I was like "What's the Umbrella song this year?" At first we could not come up with anything, then "I Kissed A Girl" came on and we both agreed that this is probably the summer '08 song.

I am so sick of that I Kissed A Girl. Which probably indicates its the song of the summer.

relative to other years, I would say there isn't one. If I had to say I'd probably go with "I Kissed a Girl" but not on the same level as prior summers.

I keep thinking about what the big summer song of the year is and there doesn't seem to be one definitive song, like "Umbrella" last year. But I think "I Kissed a Girl" has been the strongest contender, even though I am already sick of it and have moved on to other Katy Perry songs. And other songs in general.

I would have picked "4 minutes" but I feel like that song has been out too long to be the "summer" song, more like the spring song. So I went w/ Coldplay...I've been listening to that a lot this summer. I thought "I Kissed a Girl" was fun at first but now it is just annoying and I don't really listen to the radio very often.

Katy Perry is everywhere I turn right now, whereas I had to download the Coldplay to verify that I hadn't yet heard it. For all the hype over the album, the song's gotten no radio play at all in my town.

I put Coldplay because it's the one I've heard the most often, but honestly there hasn't been a big summer song. I can't stand listening to the radio right now. There's nothing good on.

I would have to say Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl". That song plays at least once every hour on the radio.

None of these. Something like "star spangled banner" to honor the 4th of July. July is in the summer.

I hear "Bleeding Love" by Leona Lewis every single time I turn on the radio. It's cooled off a little bit, but last month it was ridiculous. Now they've moved on a little bit towards "I've Kissed A Girl" but Bleeding Love has my vote.

Disturbia has the potential of becoming a huge summer hit.

i'm over most of these songs -- particularly Katy Perry - blech! I love Mercy by Duffy, and Viva La Vida is catchy even if it is the same old same old from stupid Coldplay... but, as cheesy as it is, my fave pop song of the summer so far is Jesse McCartney's "Leavin." That or Gavin DeGraw's "I'm in Love with a Girl." Both those songs make me turn up my radio to full blast and sing along.

Titolia I totally agree about Disturbia- that song is so much fun, and "Kissed a Girl" is already so played out.....even though I like it too.

Leona Lewis "Bleeding Love"...I blast this and sing along every time it comes on and I don't care if it gets old! And I think I kissed a girl is honestly the WORST song I have ever heard...

I don't really know these songs and I don't actually know what I would call the song of the summer for me.

I love Violet Hill by Coldplay but I voted for I Kissed a Girl. As much as I want to hate her and her music, it's so damn catchy!

Thank god I don't have to listen to the radio....

But I was forced to hear "Lollipop" every time I went somewhere to dance. Ugh... What a horrible song.

''I kissed a girl'' only because even my more prudish friends admit to loving it and we sang it all day yesterday during a bachelorette party! That plus its a dead catchy tune Smiling

Yeah not a lot of strong songs out there right now. I voted I Kissed A Girl out of those choices, but I'd say the summer songs are When I Grow Up, Disturbia, FOREVER, All Summer Long, and even Lollipop. Those are the ones I constantly hear at clubs and radios around my town, at least.

My personal song for summer is "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz. I do like Pocketful of Sunshine, and I Kissed a Girl...but for me it's all about "I'm Yours" this summer.

The Katy Perry song is so contrived, and it's pretty bad. I don't understand how anyone would give in to that garbage.

From the listed songs I'd go with American Boy, but unfortunately other people would rather hear garbage so it's not as popular. Disturbia has potential, but only time will tell.

I think that the Umbrella of 2008 should just be Umbrella. I'm not sick of it yet!!!

Mine is "Constructive Summer" by the Hold Steady — and if there were any justice in this musical world, it would be playing everywhere.

"Raise a toast to St. Joe Strummer / I think he might've been our only decent teacher / getting older makes it harder to remember / we are our only saviors / we're gonna build something this summer."
