Grey's Anatomy Rundown: Episode 16, "Freedom"

The three words uttered most often during the season finale of Grey's Anatomy were "really big trauma." They were used in reference to a teenager who was dared to lay in a vat of cement at a construction site, after which he was encased in several tons of concrete — yeah, you can say "really big trauma" again. As is often the case with Grey's, those three little words paralleled what was happening in the lives of the doctors too.

Let's start with Meredith who was continuing the brain-tumor clinical trials with Derek. Due to medical regulations, they were allowed only one more day to succeed (following a staggering 11 deaths). To discuss what happened in this situation and with all the other residents' traumas, read more.

Of course, in true finale style, Derek and Meredith at first failed, but then miraculously succeeded at their difficult task. Meredith's personal life, unsurprisingly, rivaled the trauma going on with work. She finally made some progress with her therapist about her mother's attempted suicide. Progress that her therapist told her she'd have to figure out for herself. Was anyone else as confused as Meredith? Her discovery at the end of the episode was more fulfilling than I was expecting it to be, and she also made some exciting progress with Derek.

The other rather traumatic plot line of the night belonged to Alex. His pseudo-girlfriend Rebecca turned out to be just as delusional as last week's episode had foreshadowed. Rebecca even tried to commit suicide, but when Izzie suggested that she needed psychiatric help, Alex got, let's say. . . defensive. In the end, Rebecca proved to have underlying borderline personality disorder. I doubt we'll be seeing her much, if at all, next season.

Christina got out of the slump that she's been wallowing in since the show returned from its break. This was, most notably, because she received the sparkle pager. The pager allowed her to take any surgery she wanted, and as a result she was able to showcase her skills on the cement boy. Luckily, she was able to save the boy's life, a feat that made Erica Hahn extremely jealous. I knew Christina's tenure with Burke would prove beneficial.

George had a big night too: He discovered that he only failed the boards by one point. He got mad at himself at first, but then asked Richard to retake the boards and thankfully, Richard agreed. Something tells me we'll be seeing George as a resident early next season.

To wrap up the rest of the episode: Izzie was handed full reign over the clinic, Richard went back to his wife, Bailey learned to juggle being a working mom, and oh yeah, Derek promised to dump Rose for Meredith! Looks like the never-ending love saga will continue on through season five. And that makes me happy.

Some other thoughts:

  • How dramatic was the cement boy story line? I was riveted. This is precisely what I was missing last week.
  • I especially loved when Miranda tried to calm Mr. Cement down with a Star Wars analogy. Who knew she would prove to have such a vast knowledge of the films?
  • I laughed out loud when the female tumor patient asked if Derek or Meredith had ever done it. "With each other?" Derek exclaimed. "He's done it and I've done it," Meredith responded. Awkward!
  • Speaking of sex, the whole Callie, Mark, Erica hypothetical threesome story line kind of bored me. But — shocker lesbian twist at the end.
  • I'm a little surprised there wasn't a big cliffhanger. Everything seemed to be tied up with a nice little bow, which is unusual for Grey's.

What did you think? Are you happy with the season finale? What are your predictions for Season Five?

I'm completely happy with the ending of this season. I think a cliff hanger would tick me off especially having to deal with the writer's strike.

I thought it was great. I was happy with the finale. I think there are still some loose ends out there for next season. George/Lexie, Alex/Izzie, Alex's state of mind, Callie/Hahn/Mark. Also, I wouldn't guarantee that nothing bad is going to happen still with Mer/Der. He did turn around and leave to break up w/Rose...the right thing to do, but we still don't know 100% that they live happily ever after now...

nery85, I agree...I have a bad feeling about Derek going to break it off with Rose. I had a sinking feeling as he walked away that he wasn't coming back and not by choice. Overall, I'd have to say I loved every minute last night. They did a great job.

After the unresolved feeling from the Ugly Betty finale, I was pretty happy with the way things went on Grey's. Although, I totally agree that something's happening to Derek that will cause him not to come back. Some sort of accident...hopefully it won't involve ferries...

I also had the thought that something bad would happen to Derek ... but the logical part of my brain says that would have made for quite a cliffhanger, and thus, if they were going to go that route, they would do it in the finale, not the premiere.

    Happy thoughts.

    Loved the whole episode!

I agree with you girls. Derek will have a dramatic speech with Rose, will be shown happy and excited to get back to Mer, and then tragedy will strike. Mer will wait and wonder and think he decided to be with Rose, not knowing he's lying near death. Very "Affair to Remember". Just my prediction.

I was happy for christina getting her mojo back. When she yelled at Hahn and the chief told her she had to start teach christina I was so happy. I like Hahn's character but it was about time she started respecting christina. Smiling

I thought this was a great episode, loved almost every minute of it...how great was it to see Christina FINALLY back in action?

My only gripe was the thing between Hahn and Callie. Its such a cliché...Girl 1 kisses Girl 2, Girl 2 can't get Girl 1 out of her mind (even during sex with Hot Guy), Girl 2 obsesses until she has a chance to kiss Girl 1 back, Girl 1 and Girl 2 happily skip off together to start their lesbian love affair.

good episode, but agree something is going to mess things up. not sure what but i see a issue.

if it is a normal we are back together they better no have mer go all crazy again after realizing all should be okay, i think i will have to leave the show for good.

Oh yeah I was thinking something would happen to Dereck too. Either that or a big earthquake would hit and send Meridith and her "house" crumbling down the cliff...

Was I the only person that didn't think anything was going to happen to Derek?? Shonda Rimes always said that Derek and Meredith would be back together and happy by the end of season. It was supposed to be a whole episode about hope (since the last season and beginning of this season were about breaking down and reaching the bottom). I just can't imagine they would take so long to get to this point and then immediately screw Meredith up again... and lose all hope. Besides, if they were going to do that, wouldn't you do it as a cliffhanger finale- not a season opener? I'm going to remain hopeful ; )

Really enjoyed last night's season finale, but agree with others: something tragic will interfere with Mer and Der getting together. Christina was awesome, as was Bailey. I'm ot crazy about the Mark, Callie, Erica love triangle, but...whatever. Alex, Izzie, Lexie and George all have great story lines set up for them next season. In all, I was really satisfied.

I too was worried about Derek... I was holding my breath (bawling) thinking the next scene was going to be some kind of car wreck. I read somewhere that they were finally going to resolve Derek and Meredith, that they would he together and deal with their relationship. Presumably they didn't want to tie things TOO neatly so they left us wondering, but will resume next season after the talk or whatever with a lovely reunion scene...

I too LOVED Alex in this episode. They really let Justin Chambers go to it.

I can't stand Izzie. She is such a bothersome little know it all pain in the arse. This time she was right, ok fine, but can't she just stay out of people's business when they ask her to? I don't even like Katherine Heigl in real life, maybe one affects the other or vice verca.

I didn't even think about something happening to Meredith or Derek, I just assumed that they would live happily ever after since Shonda Rhimes said she would get them back together by the end of the seasons. Hmmm...

The whole finale was alright, I didn't feel like Meredith's revelation to her psychologist was very exciting. The other storylines were pretty good, especially the tumor one but I think we all knew that girl's boyfriend was gonna die shortly after they had sex.

It was interesting to learn that George failed by just ONE point. I really don't think thats fair, he should have been allowed to retake them from the beginning.

I love Bailey's Star Wars knowledge. Its funny because all of the stuff she was talking about was dead-on, even the part about Leia and Han having twins (which happens in the books).

Maybe I'm a little jumpy because of previous Grey's endings but my bff and I were discussing at work today that Derek leaving Meredith in the end to wrap things up with Rose and "clear his conscience" leaves too much room for him not to come back. Especially when right before that she said something to the effect of "Don't abandon me".

Loved the whole thing. It was definately the best episode in a long while. I am so happy with Meredith and Derek!!!! I really hope nothing bad happens right off the bat. It is about time for Cristina to be her old self again. Something was missing when she was all depressed. I love Alex! I have been hoping that he and Izzie get back together so this was good for them. McSteamy is sooooo HOT! There is no other word for him. I'm so glad it didn't end in a cliff hanger. I felt good watching this episode!

i didn't think anything bad was going to happen to derek either. i too had heard that shonda rhimes wanted derek and meredith to be together. and i think i read somewhere that she and the writers felt that meredith and derek deserved to have a healthy relationship.

Great episode. I balled when I saw Meridith out there with all those candles!

Just a little comment about your analysis of the lesbian storyline, Buzz- In my opinion, the show has done a great job of broaching the topic of homosexuality through the Callie/Han storyline. It's clear that Callie is incredibly conflicted and confused by her feelings for Han, an issue many women deal with over the course of their lives. I'd guess the threesome storyline was drafted to force Callie to confront their relationship, and not simply as another lame lesbian hookup created solely to boost ratings (can you say Ally McBeal?)

Other than that, yay for the finale. Can't wait for next season!

    2. i knew that was Michelle's friend from Full House too.

    3. LOVED alex's breakdown. izzie annoys me..

    4. the callie/hahn thing seems to have come from out of nowhere

    5. i noticed that Honda commercial w/ the guy in the concrete too, talk about awkward timing! i wonder if it was planned or one of those weird coincidences...

WOW what a great episode! I loved it!. Where to start? Lexi was really getting on my nerves last night with her sneaking peeks at the files, but then I had to laugh out loud when she told Alex in the elevator, "I know you have two balls". LOL

I jumped for joy when Christina told Hahn to shut up and let her work. Maybe next season we'll find out why Hahn hates her so much.

You guys are depressing me with your talk of Derek getting in a car accident or something! But you know they always have to find something to keep Derek and Merideth apart Sad

How obvious was that when Alex was using a big 'ole honkin knife to cut tomatoes right infront of Rebecca, and then he walks away and she cuts herself.

So did Alex and Izzie end up having sex? I couldn't figure it out.

At the end when Derek said that he had to go end it with Rose and that he'll be back, Merideth had the weirdest look on her face. I thought she would have been happy, but she didn't really look happy. I can't figure her out.

    I loved it!

I kind of figured that Callie was going to end up eith Erica at the end though, considering she kept giving the speech to the Lola girl about her (boy)friend and how she was going to regret turning her back on him just because of what people thought. And I think they were leading onto this for a few episodes now, with Callie running right to Sloan for all the sex right after Addison declared what she thought of those two. I could see that they were having her try and deny it so hard.

I LOVED the friggin' candle house. LOVED it.

I thought it was beautifully sad the way Meredith was cleaning up Ava/Rebecca's blood too, of course mimicking her mother's suicide attempt.

it was good, but ended too easily with most everything working out. i thought rose would still have more of a chance. she was totally rebound material, when in previous episodes, it seemed like mcdreamy was seriously considering her. is there really that much more drama to show in the next season. it was almost like a happy ending for most everyone, but mc steamy.

I was extremely disappointed with the episode. It felt like they gave up on storyline just to hook people up; I half expected Sloan and Yang to end up in a clinch. Lesbian kiss was no surprise, and just really disappointing (hey, hot kiss with girl made me realize I'm a lesbian...puhleez). The only redeeming part was the development of Alex's storyline; I've never liked Rebecca, but I liked how the writers used the conclusion of her storyline to explain his character more. Justin Chambers rocked his scenes.

Loved it. The ending scene with Meredith and the house made me cry. I loved the side story lines too. I am not a big fan of the Callie and Erica storyline. Callie is not gay. I hate when they turn straight characters gay. Besides that this episode was amazing. Big improvement from last years finale.

I LOVED the finale! The candle thing was corny and really unlikely that she would have done that herself (where did she get all the glass hurricanes? also the lines were VERY straight!), but I loved the finale anyway. It seems that there's hope that Meredith will stop whining afterall!

I have to admit, watching Grey's last night was like paint by numbers. They've started getting pretty formulaic and i guess if you know characters pretty well then you know their behaviors and you can predict what they're going to do. I still loved the episode, regardless.

However, Lexi is really grating my nerves. If you think about it, she's like this little lost lonely puppy that everyone keeps shaking off their leg. I just wish she was a little stronger (like Yang keeps trying to make her). I hope next season gives her a backbone.

So is Callie going to be a lesbian next season, or bisexual. I thought that whole story line was weird, but it will be interesting how it plays out. I was SOOO happy for Christina when she told Hahn to shut up and then Bailey's shocked looked was funny. Its about time Christina told off Hahn, cause Hahn has been a b*tch to her all season.

I LOVE Bailey, and I am so glad that her character has been developing more and more each episode. I hope that continues next season.

I was surprised by the MerDer ending, but it made me happy nonetheless. I love how she outlined their house--that was cute and a good way to wrap up the season. Looks like there will be a lot of ground to cover next season and I can't wait!
