American Idol: David Cook Takes the Crown

Depending on your perspective, the American Idol finale is either the best two hours ever or the most excruciating two hours of your year. Either way, it never fails to be a kind of crazy, psychedelic blend between a televised award ceremony and a giant Ford commercial that brings the season's contestants back to the stage for one last time (until the tour that is).

America smashed all Idol records with 97.5 million votes, 56 percent of them for David Cook. Simon admitted that he called it wrong, that upon viewing the show at home he realized the night before was not a blowout. Which is what many of us were feeling. I'd still call the result an upset. There was a lot to cover so let's get down to it. To see my thoughts on the night, read more.

  • The opening act was cool and the kids sounded great but it was really hard to tell the So You Think You Can Dance dancers apart from the Idols. At one point I thought, "Hey, look at that. Brooke White doing the splits. Oh wait, no."
  • Jason Castro once again sounded gorgeous singing "Hallelujah." It's one of, say, two songs he should ever sing. And that doesn't include anything from Cats.
  • You know who should avoid choreographed dancing at all costs? Amanda Overmyer. And we heard about Donna Summer's new single. Um, yay?
  • I'm sorry, did I see Ryan Seacrest attempting to break dance? Surely I was a bit delirious and the So You Think You Can Dance kids were just blending in again, right?!
  • Sigh. Michael Johns' duet with Carly Smithson (who looked and sounded great) and then more Michael Johns when the six guys sang. . . Keep the Michael Johns coming!
  • An American Idol theme park: "You too can live the dream." Just. . . wow.

  • David Cook rocking out with ZZ Top was really cool. It's hard not to look smoking hot with those bearded legends playing backup for you.
  • Pairing Brooke White with Graham Nash to sing "Teach Your Children" was really smart and probably a dream come true for her. But why not Carly Simon? She has a new-ish album out and those two on stage together would have blown my mind.
  • Grrr. . . why do they bring the crazies back every year? I hate it! This is what you take up my time with waiting for the results?! Renaldo Lapuz, one my Caption It people? However, I admit the whole spectacle was worth it to see Paula get on up there with the crazies to dance. And Renaldo kept singing even when the music stopped. Yeah, it's time for a commercial break.
  • I did not like Jordan's song nor did I like her outfit. What the heck was she wearing? I felt bad for her that she had to follow that One Republic/Archuleta goosebump-fest but still, yikes.
  • Robert Downey Jr. as a back up dancer to Gladys Knight was so freaking cute, I thought I might faint. Oh yeah, Ben Stiller and Jack Black were there, too.
  • Did Carrie Underwood borrow her outfit from Renaldo? Regardless, she took on that stage like the pro she has become and brought down the house.

It all ended with a big tribute to George Michael and then the man himself showed up to sing "Praying for Time" (the song Carrie Underwood sang on Idol Gives Back). And of course Paula shed some tears and rambled something about dreams and hope. David Cook was crowned. Both guys should feel proud, but I'm so happy with the results! You?

So very happy, yes! I haven't seen anyone posting/talking about the weird (funny?) tie-in with the Love Guru. I did laugh out loud when Mike tried to shave David Cook.

Also loved the Guitar Hero commercials. Posted DC's in my videos so I can watch it again & again. http://teamsugar.com/user/Cocoangel/videos/1651968

Sounded like a really awesome show! My TiVo just DIDN'T TAPE IT. No explanation whatsoever, it wasn't even in my list of "Not Recorded," it just didn't recognize that it was even on. I was home too, I just wanted to be able to TiVo my way through it. By the time I realized it, it was already over and I had to go on YouTube to see the last 5 minutes and find out who won. I was so angry last night.

It's always nice to be able to fast forward through Idol because honestly there are too many commercials and too many performances I could care less about.

Thanks Cocoangel for posting the video. I hadn't seen it yet.

    LOVE DAVID COOK!

Partly because I thought he was the better performer (Archuletta is a good singer, but not performer) and partly because I live in Kansas City, MO!!!!!!!!!

I teared up when the camera panned his brother and he mouthed "That's my brother!".

Did anyone else find it hilariously ironic that David Hernadez got to sing the line in Father Figure that had naked in it?

The Love Guru shtick was worth it just to see Ryan Seacrest say with a straight face, "Hairinmykeester."

I'm not a huge AI fan, but I loved last night. Mostly because I loved Jason's song--I had never heard him sing it before so I loved it. I loved Robert Downey Jr. and Co.--that was cute. The Love Guru thing was stupid, but I still laughed at parts. But I thought all of the top 6 girls were having trouble with the choreography, esp. Amanda Overmyer--it was hard to watch!! I loved the So You Think You Could Dance kids, but they did blend too much!

    Rosemary and Satan Cowell!

    Jason sounded awesome!

Who thought it would be a good idea for Jordan to wear that dress? It didn't fit right and made her look bigger than she is and plus the dress was just plain UGLY!

My thoughts on last night: Carrie Underwood's legs are out of this world. Too bad her outfit looked like the Reba collection at Dillard's.

    highlights:
    - David Cook's sens of humour in various moments [the guru thing kind of funny overall]
    - Jimmy Kimmel
    - Jack Black + Robert Downey Jr + Ben Stiller

David Cook's reaction to the fact that he is the next american idol was priceless and really moving.. He is so humble and genuine, actually he doesn't fit this cheesy show in any way, but with his talent he truelly deserves the crown.
Also i just can't keep my eyes off him everytime he's on stage. And it's not the cuteness, handsomeness or whatever, not at all. It's just this mesmeric passion for music and the look on his face when he sings.

I just hope he won't be eaten alive by the producers of his next album, and will have any say in the matter.

I ABSOLUTELY agree about Carrie Underwood, legs and outfit! I kept on thinking she was going to trip on that weird train arm flap thing. And I was afraid paula was going to pop out of her dress, she was flapping around so much, and I was kind of annoyed that I watched 2 hours of nothing to get 2 minutes of results.

But it was all worth it when they said COOK! I was shocked.

I was sooooo happy that Cook ended up winning! My cynical self had given up the cause but I was happily surprised! YAY COOK!

    @kathy6343 - I noticed that too...thought it was hysterical!

Best non-David Cook moment? Robert Downey Jr. AWEsome.

Also...did anyone else tear up when Cook's brother Andrew mouthed "that's my brother!" into the camera while crying at the very end. Loved it.

I actually really enjoyed last night, which is saying a lot because I haven't really enjoyed a finale yet.

I was laughing so hard when David H. sang the word naked. So funny.

I felt so wrong watching David A's guitar hero commericial. I just felt so uncomfortable.

Michael Johns is yummy. I was glad to see him again because I love him.

Jordin's dress was gross and was definitely not flattering. At all.

I LOVED the OneRepublic/David Archuleta duet. I've actually wanted David A. to sing OneRepublic all season long, so I was so happy when he came out singing Apologize. I think he could make a OneRepublic-esque record.

Carrie Underwood's outfit was not cute at all, but she still looked stunning and sounded amazing.

I really liked the duet with the Davids. I didn't think I would, but I actually think they sounded great together.

For the first time, ever, I didn't care who won. I think both Davids were deserving and this was my favourite final two ever. I absolutely loved them both. I'm really happy for David Cook. I really do hope he has a great career.

I was happy that we got to hear a lot from Michael Johns. I love him! And I'm really happy David Cook won. This is the first time I've really been happy about who won American Idol. I wish Michael Johns was in the top 2 instead of David Archuleta though.

The Idol finale was alright - it was too long, but it had its good moments. I'm happy about David Cook winning, seeing him cry made me emotional.

My favorite parts of the night were:
    - The Love Guru. I thought that movie looked dumb (especially since Jessica Alba is in it) but Mike Myers was HILARIOUS
    - Love the Robert Downey Jr, Ben Stiller, and Jack Black choreography but it went on WAY too long.
    - I liked Jimmy Kimmel's jokes because he says exactly what America is thinking and calls the judges out.

I forgot to mention that I also liked...

    - seeing most of the Idols again (especially Michael Johns, Carly Smithson, and Brooke White) but I definitely did not miss Amanda Overmyer.
    - the duet between the Davids, as well as their individual performances with ZZ Top and OneRepublic

Okay, so the whole boxing match theme was a bit cheesy for me on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, but I'm glad they laid off of that for the finale. I am a huuuuggeee D. Cook fan, so overall, I was very happy with the results, esp. since I thought Archuleta would win. My heart leaped when Simon apologized and I screamed (yes, I admit it... Eye-wink) when David Cook's name was called. Way to go Cook!!!

For the first time ever Michael Johns wasn't just a mediocre singer. Why he didn't perform like that when he was actually on the show I have no idea. (He is dreamy though, wow.) But I have to say, even though it looks like I'm the only one, that I was really bummed about the results last night. I hate Cook's smug face. And his eyeliner looked retarded in the last part of the finale. He seems like kind of a tool and definitely sounds like a Daughtry ripoff and I am sad if America really thinks he's a superior singer. Too Nickleback for me, sorry. I have yet to have anyone I want to win actually make it to the top of American Idol.

Not a huge fan of Carrie Underwood but her performance was great. I loved her outfit.

    DAVID COOK ALL THE WAY!!!!

I absolutely love this man. David A was a gracious runner-up wanted to give him a hug. Loved the way David Cook called all the contestants over to share his moment of glory. What a mensch!!

The whole show was amazing. The performances were awesome, and they were singing songs I've heard of!! Best idol finale ever!

Oh Jack Black was AWESOME. I didn't really notice Ben Stiller or Robert Downey Jr. RDJ should stick to serious roles.

All in all it was television at it's finest.

My mom was intent on watching it for two reasons: one was two see who one, the second (and actually biggest reason) was to see Renaldo Lapuz perform. Something about being a fellow countryman or something of that sort. It's pretty interesting to note that he was a former tricycle driver who went on the big stage to perform.

Here's a bite on how many viewers watched Wed. night:

News Corp.'s Fox, the U.S. television network with the top-rated "American Idol," says it finished the season with the largest prime-time audience for the first time, surpassing five-year champion CBS. Fox's "Idol" finale Thursday night won 31.7 million viewers, up 2.9% from a year ago.

I enjoyed David's humble and gracious heart - sharing the winning moment as much as he could with his family and th
