First Look: Joss Whedon's Dollhouse on Fox

How many of you caught the ad for JJ Abrams' Fall show Fringe during American Idol last night? I think it looks pretty good, so I'm excited Fox is preparing for a potentially one-two punch when they roll out a sci-fi thriller from Joss Whedon (creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer) come mid-season. This means that if both Fringe and Dollhouse are as good as they look I'm going to be spending a lot of time over at Fox this year.

Dollhouse stars Eliza Dushku as Echo, an "Active" who is part of an illegal, underground group of people who have had their former lives wiped from their memories so that they can, as the show's description states, "fulfill any number of scenarios for anyone including romantic, criminal, uplifting, dangerous, comical and the occasional pro bono good deed." It's like the Bourne story but instead of turning people into killing machines, they can do just about anything for anyone. And just like another show this series reminds me of, Alias, Echo has a handler named Boyd (played by Harry Lennix). The drama unravels as Echo begins to remember her past personality at the same time as an FBI agent starts to figure out the existence of the "Dollhouse."

I think this has loads of potential and will cross my fingers it's a good one. To see a preview trailer and a short scene from Dollhouse, read more.

"You've got to be straight with me."
"Well, you've been pretty frickin' bendy with me."

    That sounds SO Buffy!

I am a huge Buffy fan to the point of being obsessive. But I was bored with Angel and never caught Firefly. Still, this has definite potential.

    Hi Buzz,

Quick note - you have a typo in the first paragraph. It's Joss Whedon (not Josh). Thanks for the post though - I'm always glad to see any news on the Whedonverse!

Ah! This looks wonderful! I love the dialogue, Eliza is great and I think the cast looks promising. I am really looking forward to it! I loved Buffy and Firefly. I may have to go back and retro-view Angel. Let's hope Fox gives it a chance! I will be watching!

Dude, Faith and Helo? (And yes, they will always carry their character names.) This looks fabulous. Maybe enough reason for me to start watching more TV post-strike.

Yessssss! Only thing more exciting for me would be getting to be in the show. Then again, I'd probably bore everyone to tears with my tales of Whedon admiration. The dude genuinely loves and respects women. Can we clone him?

I will give this a fair chance because I LOVED Buffy and Angel. Haven't watched Firefly yet, but I'm sure I would like it too.

This is the most anticipated new show next season for me! Joss Whedon can do no wrong, and Eliza Dushku looks amazing. I just hope Fox gives Dollhouse a season or two to mature before even thinking about pulling the plug.

I am super excited! I love the story of how Eliza had lunch with Joss and discussed the idea she had and how he was immediately drawn in and knew he HAD to write it.

Admittedly, I love Joss and Buffy is the greatest show ever. (Followed by Veronica Mars - not Joss, but strong and witty and sassy just the same!) I do follow him around and loved Angel, love Season Eight in the comics and well....the only thing I wasn't totally into was Serenity.

I do like this very much. It reminds me a bit of La Femme Nikita/Point of No Return. I like the twist. Great concept, allowing for great new situations every week. I do hope, as others do, that FOX gives it a proper chance and pairs it with a great show and doesn't put it up against something that it has not chance against. I've seen it suggested as the lead-in to 24 and I think that might work! Joss really is a great writer and has a great imagination and I'm so pleased to see him work with some Buffy alums again!

There are already online sites and groups devoted to Dollhouse fandom and petitions to save the show...since we know how networks can be. Given Joss's previous success in both film and television, I'd be mightily disappointed if we only got 1 or 2 seasons of Dollhouse.

I am going to watch for many reasons, one of which is Tahmoh Penikett or "Helo" from BSG.

Oh my god I was soo excited for this show until I saw Dichen Lachman is in it! She used to be on Neighbours here (extremely long running but crappy half hour soapie) and was the most annoying and BAD actress ever. We couldn't stand her and I can't beleive she has somehow ended up on a show with the most amazing show creator ever.

I am so depressed.... Still love Joss and Eliza and I will watch (with some dissapointment).

Am I the only one who couldn't view the trailer? There is always just a big blank white space wherever videos are meant to be on pop for me
