Lost Episode 11: "Cabin Fever"

Oh, I just love the Locke flashbacks! And this one is especially cool because it begins before Locke is even born, which I thought was awesome. There are so many clues and connections between Locke and the island that started way before he got to the island — before he even ended up in the wheelchair.

This episode of Lost also gave me flashbacks to when I used to watch that Nickelodeon show Are You Afraid of the Dark? Mostly that part with Locke carrying the lantern in the cabin. . . creepy! To talk more about this and other aspects of this week's episode (there be spoilers ahead, brotha), read more.

  • I loved the beginning of this episode. The young Locke's mom putting "Everyday" on the record player, bopping around, getting ready for her date with a man who her mother scolds her about for being "twice your age, Emily." ("So what, Mother? Jealous?") Such a good setup.
  • Starting with Locke's birth we can see from the start that he's a fighter, a special person. Throughout his life it seems that he was being drawn to the island, one way or another (Richard Alpert going to his house, the high school teacher pushing him to go to science camp at Mittelos Laboratories, where Juliet was recruited to do reserach) but that he never accepted his "destiny" — until he got to the cabin.
  • So, Ben understands that where he once was "the chosen one," now it's Locke's time. He watches Locke as he dreams about Horace, and later tells him, "I used to have dreams."
  • I originally thought Horace's nose is bleeding because that's something that happened when he died. But here's another theory: maybe his nose is bleeding because he's traveling through time, and his nose bleeds just like Desmond's did in "The Constant."
  • The scene in which Alpert asks Locke to choose the items that belong to him "already" is so tense and interesting, but it baffles me. "You sure the knife belongs to you John? You sure of that? Well, it doesn't." Why do you think Alpert rushes away after Locke chooses the knife?
  • There is an idea that this process Alpert utilizes with Locke is "very similar to how the new Dalai Lama is selected."
  • Sayid: "The only way to save our lives is to get those people off the island."
    Hmm. . .
  • Ewwwwwww corpses make me so nauseated.
  • "You can't be the prom king. You can't be the quarterback. You can't be a superhero." The superhero line is funny because, as Lostpedia points out, Alpert's introduction to the little kid John is almost word-for-word from The X-Men: I'm Richard, John. I run a school for kids who are. . . extremely special, and I have reason to believe that you might be one them."
  • I love that Frank Lupidas and his lively, bushy eyebrows.
  • Best line of the night goes to Ben: "Those things had to happen to me. That was my destiny. But you'll understand soon enough that there are consequences to being chosen. Because destiny, John, is a fickle bitch."
  • I knew the guy pushing the chair was going to be Matthew Abbadon. I just knew it. He tells Locke that he should go on a walkabout, and ends things with, "When you and I run into each other again? You'll owe me one."
  • Eeeek, this time bending thing — with the doctor showing up on the shore with his throat slit "before" he's killed on the boat — is hurting my brain a little bit.
  • Love the part when Ben says, with his eyes all creepy, "The island wanted me to get sick. It wanted you to get well. My time is over. It's yours now."
Hurley: "Yeah, I'm cool with you going in alone, too."
  • Even though we've known for a while that it's probably Christian Shepard sitting in that cabin, I was still afraid of the creepy shadowy guy sitting in the dark. And then Claire's calm, smiling face! Aaack! Now we know that Christian isn't Jacob but he "can speak on his behalf." He confirms that Locke was "chosen" to be there, and says that Aaron is "where he's supposed to be, and that's not here." This makes me think of Hurley's comment to Jack in the future that Jack "isn't supposed to raise Aaron."
  • The one question that matters: "How do I save the island?"
  • OK, I laughed out loud at the Hurley-shares-a-candy-bar-with-Ben bit.
  • Finally: Move the island?

Crazy good episode!!! I'm so glad we're back to the old, creepy Lost! I agree about the nose-bleeding- definitely a side-effect of the time travel. And the tree re-appearing! How sucky- doomed to chop down that tree for eternity...
My bf thinks that Chrstian is either not really dead or is somehow ressurected by the island and that when Jack saw him at the hospital in the last episode, he was REALLY there, not just as a ghost. I am not sure about resurection- but Christian did hold Aaron, and I am not sure a ghost could do that- even on the Island. And what was up with Claire??? Is she dead or just island-ized or what? She sure seemed awfully calm.

The interplay between John, Ben and Hurley was fantastic- such good acting and just a lot of great little moments. I really hope Jack figures out what is up with the phone/tracker and doesn't lead all of our folks right to the psycho death squad.

We're actually going to watch it again tonight and look for more clues!

argh! this episode like always had me wanting more!! is claire dead? why is she so calm and not upset that aaron isn't with her? what happened to jacob? and did anyone else think of the 'Goonies' when hurley shared his candybar with Ben? i need the skin care line that alpert uses! he never ages! isn't locke's father the guy who talked him into giving up his kidney? i'm confused...AND wasn't jack's dad dead BEFORE the plane crashed? How could he be so 'alive' on the island? did the island bring him back using jack's memories??

I thought thsi was a GREAT episode. I LOVED the John backstories, how they're showing him So connected with the island. It's totally freaky to me how the islanders never age. I mean we saw Richard Alpert with Ben when he was a kid, remember, he was a "Hostile" when Ben was a kid on the island. Also I read somewhere that if what Horace said is acurate, him being dead 12 years that means the "Purge" was in 1992.
ALSO Anyone notice the dharma logo on the 2nd protocol packet thing Keamy opened? Looked a lot like the one that was on Ben's jacket when he landed in Tunisia or whenever he was.
Also someone noticed there was an error: The single of "Everyday" by Buddy Holly that Johns mother was listening to while getting ready was released in July of 1957, over one year after Locke's birthdate of May 30, 1956. It would be impossible for Emily to have been playing this record the night of John's birth.

I loved the scene Dr.Alpert asks Locke to choose the items that belong to him...why Dr.Alpert ran off is killing me.

Also, in the cabin...my heart stopped twice...Claire seemed so calm...creepy.

Keamy is officially the worst character in the history of the show. EVER. I get so mad thinking about him! Just the way he carries himself, his arrogance, and the way he just nonchalanty kills people they way normal people sneeze. Can he just die already?!

Haha sorry, had to rant about him Sticking out tongue

Oh and I wanted to point out that they never found Christian Shepards body. He was supposed to be in the casket, but Jack found it and it was ope and empty. Also, he's one of the few people that have appeared on the island after being dead (eko's brother Yemi was the other). The writes confirmed that Yemi was "influenced by The Monster" but no mention of whether Christian is too. He has been classified by them as "undead" though.

I thought Alpert looked disappointed when Locke chose the knife. It somehow seemed like he wanted him to choose the "Book of Laws", which really puzzled me. I thought the knife seemed like a good choice for the island...
For some reason I loved how Alpert showed up at the hospital in the beginning...

Leilanic1, that definitely reminded me of the Goonies, too. Smiling

Cooper is definitely Locke's real father. Given that he had ties to Sawyer as well, he is definitely tied to the group/ island somehow.

I don't think that we are supposed to assume that Christian, Claire or Charlie are really dead because we never saw them dead or buried. Other people who have died, we have seen them die.

I think that the knife represents being a leader or maybe a 'hostile'?? Richard's reaction when Lil John chose it seemed more angry and even possesive than disappointed to me. He seemed really PO'd - like maybe it was HIS knife, and not John's. Also, if John was later being recruited to 'summer science camp' does that mean that Richard was not representing the same group of people- I mean, he had already 'tested' Locke as a child and decided he failed, right?

I am also now coming down on the side of Claire being killed in the explosion and just being a manifestaion of herself that the island is using to manouver Aaron. I do think that's why the ghost whisper guy was so interested in her. I cannot believe for one second that the Claire we know would just blithely hand Aaron over to anyone
(not even her supposedly dead, estranged father) and then just be sitting around the cabin chillin' with Christian. I think she is now part of the island. However- that also makes it more reasonable that Christian IS NOT dead- someone has to physically get Aaron over to Kate or whoever actually physically removes him from the island.
And go Syied!! Going off in the little Zodiac all alone to try and get some of the people off the island... very brave. I really really hope Ben or John sicks Smokey on Keamy and ends him.

I didn't think that the objects he had to choose were a representation of anything... I thought that child Locke was a reincarnation of someone and Richard was showing him objects that that person had owned in the previous life - trying to test him to see if he really was a reincarnation.

I think anytime my head hurts, it's a sign of a really good episode. CJaneTyp, I believe the doctor who washed up on shore and the doctor on the ship are the same person. It's the relativity of time that Daniel was really concerned about.

Also, I loved Hurley and Ben in this episode!

One more thing, does anyone know what dharma symbol was on the protocol handbook that Keamy took from the safe? It looked like the same one on Ben's Dharma jacket...

reesiekitty - I seem to remember Richard saying to John's foster mom (I'm assuming?) that he wasn't quite ready for his school. So maybe they were leaving it open hoping that John would grow into the roll? Also, I'm pretty sure Christian is dead. I mean the doctors said he died of an alcohol induced heart attack and he was hanging out in a coffin for quite some time before they finally crashed on the island. The fact that the writers have called him Undead make me think that he is in fact dead and was ressurected or is a ghosty type. Also, Sawyer found Aaron and currently has him, I'm pretty sure he's the one that will pass him off to Kate.

I love Frank Lapidus as well, Buzz. He is by far my favorite of the new characters. Keamy is my least favorite. It's not that he's an *sshole (Sawyer in the early episodes was a total douche and I always liked him. Same with Shannon's b*tchiness), it's that he's just not entertaining.

Claire being all calm and sort of smug really creeped me out too.

Maybe instead of moving the island to another PLACE, they're moving it to another TIME.

Yeah Christian didn't hand Aaron over, Sawyer picked him up, Renees3 is right.

Reesiekitty- I would buy your argument as well, that given that Claire is not coming after Aaron, she may just be being "used" by the island- maybe if you die when you are on that island (or soon before and end up there like C.Shep.) the island sort of absorbs you and can use you...???

I think that Christian Shepherd has to be dead since Jack identified the body in Sydney. And, if Clarie is dead, then Sawyer would not be able to see her or communicate with her, yet he was able to before she left with Christian. Perhaps Christian Shepherd is time-traveling from when he was alive. (Similar to Horace.)

kgtg - I like your theory about reincarnation. All of the items were very old -- perhaps from The Black Rock?? Did anyone else think that perhaps Richard Alpert or Charles Widmore is Locke's real father? As Emily's mother pointed out, she was goign out with a man twice her age! I don't think it is possible for Cooper to be Locke's real father. Also, although she denied knowing him, I thought there was some recognition on Emily's mother's face in the hospital when she saw Richard Alpert.

If the island has moved before (which it has to have since Ben knew exactly what it meant by "moving the island") that could explain some of the weird weather phenomenons. First the polar bears and then when Ben landed in the dessert in some sort of parka.

Does anyone have an idea what Keamy has strapped to his arm? Is it a detanator?

And we've also seen John very intent on saving this island. Is that something he's grown to learn and, if so, how? Notice he asks Christian "How do I save the island?" not "How do I save these people?" Interesting...

(I think Daniel Faraday is cute, even if he's shady and making up lies about morse code.)

Wow, some really good comments and questions brought up in this forum. Its a testament to the talent of the writers how so many different viable theories are brought up. I think the main thing they have emphasized in this new season is time travel (Desmond being the first with a whole episode dedicated to its explanation). Desonnd, however, was accidentally affected by turning the key in the "hatch." Moreover, in the last episode Ben time traveled to recruit Sayid and take it up with Witmore...

In any case, in this episode, the John flashbacks with the original "others" testing him is more time travel. I've had the same thoughts about John being a reincarnation of Jacob? or is it just a test and each item was only symbolism.

In any case, this show has evolved into something way more interesting than I originally gave it credit for (bravo Lost peeps).

P.S. Anyone else bummed about not seeing Jacob? and why doesn't John/Hurley ask Ben more about who Jacob is... or what he is...

The polar bears were not just living on the island, they were there for experimentation purposes. Remember Sawyer and Kate were kept in the Polar Bear cage??

Locke gave Cooper a kidney because they were a genetic match.

I'm not sold on the theory that Claire is dead and is being used by the island. Yes, she was very creepy/calm and not bothered by Aaron not being with her. This part really bothered me - it was like her mind was being controlled or in some sort of hypnotic trance.

So does Richard time travel or does he just not age? I was assuming he just doesn't age, but MicrochipJoel's post opens the possibility that Richard time travels. But we really only have confirmation of Des having visions and time traveling, due to his turning the key. As far as we know Ben doesn't have visions, but he seems to have time traveled to the desert.

On this whole who is Locke's father question. I always found it weird that Cooper didn't look that much older than Locke. May be he is Locke's father and doesn't age (like Richard). It would explain his father being twice the age of his mother...and that Cooper has come connection to the island, thus his appearance on it and death by Sawyer.

Doesn't it seem like once a person has been drawn in to the island (like Michael), they have an understanding without question? Claire is the latest. She seemed so relaxed with her situation, which is unnerving, because the viewers have no idea what is going on! I thought that was the strangest part of last night. We have always known that John's special connection to the island would play out, but it's interesting to me that Ben is passing the torch to him, so to speak. I loved the sharing of the candy bar. While ruthless, Ben seems a little more mellow than in past episode. And I did enjoy the "fickle b*tch" comment.
