"The Black Donnellys": One Ending, Two Songs

The song that played over the final scenes of "The Black Donnellys" on Monday apparently wasn't the original choice for that spot. There are two versions of the ending floating around right now: one that aired on Monday and features Snow Patrol's "Open Your Eyes" over the climactic scenes, and one from the original, unaired pilot with Arcade Fire's "Rebellion (Lies)" playing instead.

After watching both versions, I'm amazed at how much the song changes the character of the ending. The Snow Patrol song fades into the background, making the acting and dialogue carry the drama. The Arcade Fire song, on the other hand, makes the scenes feel much more urgent, and the lyrics match the action better. For my money, the Arcade Fire version is more powerful, though the Snow Patrol ending picks up steam when Tommy Donnelly starts the gunfight (about three minutes in).

I haven't seen an official explanation for the change, though this story rhapsodizing about the Arcade Fire version chalks it up to licensing issues. That would make sense; the only time I remember hearing that song on TV is during Nate Fisher's 40th birthday party on "Six Feet Under" (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

By the way, these five minutes were the best part of the pilot, so if you missed the premiere but watch these scenes, consider yourself caught up. Here's the ending as it aired, with the Snow Patrol song:

I watched this when it aired and actually though the Snow Partol song was an odd (and cliched -- seriously? More Snow Patrol) choice. The Arcade Fire version is great, though. Plus the title of the song "Rebellion(Lies)" couldn't be more perfect.

I agree with Molly. Arcade Fire's "Rebellion(Lies)" does capture mood and set tone better than "Open Your Eyes."

I really enjoyed the ep. It reminds me kind of the movie Boondock Saints ( I love that movie).

Wow my comment does not make sense and I don't know why it posted twice. What I was trying to say/type was that the show reminds me of the the movie Boondock Saints a little. It has been a long day please forgive me.

I like the episode version better. The song picks up right where it should, it leads you to the action that is about to happen. I understand that the Arcade Fire version is more like the heart beat of the moment. While watching the show and not knowing what was going to happen it suited it perfectly (the Snow Patrol).
Besides all that though I really loved this show and am glad that Studio 60 was moved for a decent show. (I am one of the few who like that show.)

The Arcade Fire song is so much better it sucks that the had to change it! It gave the scene a completly different feel.
they also changed the song that played when tommy was chasing louis downtown...In the leaked version they had an awesome song by the Faint (which i thought was awesome) but it never got aired on monday.

knm4, I, too, love The Boondock Saints and hopefully this show can capture a little of its vibe, though I worry it won't be too marketable (as BS was never all that popular).

I prefer the Snow Patrol song. It set the mood appropriately and rocks out at just the right time. And I too love The Boondock Saints. I have a thing for scrappy Irish boys.

Now that I've seen them I can say I like Snow Patrol better. I wanted to say it before, just cuz I LOVE them. But it does change the mood a LOT...totally different. I like the more somber and emotional one.

I love both songs for that scene. Both works. The Arcade Fire song set the scene quickly. I preferred the Snow Patrol song.
