SJP Honored at ShoWest, Addresses Rumors of a Death in SATC Movie

In her smart, gracious way, Sarah Jessica Parker fielded questions about the Sex and the City movie when she accepted the first ever Vanguard Award at ShoWest in Las Vegas. Though it's news to me, there's apparently a rumor going around that one of the characters will die in the movie. Trying to address the question without revealing too much, Parker explained that they wanted to make a "grown up" movie with some "seriousness." ComingSoon has more from ShoWest:

What we tried to do is it's a grown-up movie and I think those people that have seen it have been very surprised. There's a seriousness about something that happens in this movie and it's really about real life and your own complicity and disappointments and the necessity of friends at certain points, but really, as a grown-up to really take care of yourself. There's still plenty of ribald, salty, dirty stuff, but I think it's a really smart story. I think Michael Patrick (King, writer and director of the film) wrote a beautiful screenplay and selfishly, I feel like he wrote the role of a lifetime for me, and it was just an amazing experience.

So, the death is neither confirmed nor denied. This news has revved up my imagination, distracting me with thoughts about who — if anyone — might die in the movie. Does the part of the trailer when she drops her phone take on new significance? Interesting. Seriously, May 30 can't get here quickly enough.

For more of Parker's thoughts on the movie, read more.

  • On SATC's shifting audience: "I think we recognized very clearly who the base audience was — not 'base' in a negative way — but who our audience started out to be at HBO and that was obviously primarily sophisticated women and the homosexual community, and then along came straight men, as they do. Then of course, it went into syndication, a broader audience was reached, and those demographics changed a lot. The audience became a lot younger, they reached areas where people normally don't generally get HBO, so that all changed. . .We just really wanted to tell a great story and we really encouraged Michael to write a screenplay that's about who those women are now."
  • On making the movie: "Honestly, the best part was just being there on set the first day, being together. It took a lot to get this movie back up and running, and I spent the last year and a half of my life just bringing it all together, and to find ourselves on the set playing again, surrounded by a lot of crew members that have been there from the beginning and surrounded on the peripheral by hundreds of women and curious paparazzi. It was really kind of heavenly to be there again, shooting at the perfect time of year, the most romantic time, late summer/early fall, and. . . it was a thrill, the whole experience from the first day to the last."
  • On SATC-type shows like Cashmere Mafia and Lipstick Jungle: "Here's what I think is great: HBO cleverly 10 years ago made Sunday night a standing date for a lot of women in America, but I think it's great that network television thinks the female audience has an important place in terms of revenue and audience and advertising dollars. Obviously, people realize that there's an audience for programming that's aimed primarily at women, so I think that's fantastic. It means there's job opportunities in New York, it means work for people and hopefully interesting ideas about who women are at certain times in their lives, so I think that's fantastic. . . I wish them great luck."

I can't wait to see the movie. I really hope they don't have Samantha die of breast cancer. That would be really sad.

Sam was the first one I thought of but maybe Big has a heart attack (another one) and dies this time?

They can't kill off one of the girls. I wouldn't be able to watch the show ever again. I think it'll be Steve or Smith. They cannot kill off Big, that would shatter my heart!

if someone does die, i think it may be someone directly related to carrie - (ie not steve's mom) because she starts out with blonde-ish hair in the preview and after she drops the phone she has brown hair, i think it's the scene w/ jennifer hudson, you know how some people will change their hair color reflecting there current mood? so i wonder if it might be big.... Oh i hope not!

If they kill off one of the girls (i.e. probably Samantha) I'd be soooooooo pissed.
What if they kill off Big though? Phone dropping, wedding thing... you never know.
But maybe no one dies and they're just milking this for publicity. It works.
Anyhow, I can't wait to see the movie!! Yay.

First off, Big CAN'T die and if he did, Carrie would be SO devastated that she wouldn't be able to get out of bed.

it's gotta be steve's mom, right? i would hate for them to kill off anyone, but at least that wouldn't be a main character. anyone else would be waaay too sad.

If it's Big I will be so pissed. Honestly then what was the point of making the movie? They would have been better off with their fans just leaving it at the finale of the tv show.

i think that there are so many rumors about this movie that no one really knows what's giong to happen. you can speculate but no one will know until they release the movie.

i think that it's good that MPK did such a great job and that SJP feels so tied to it. it's a bad sign when the actors don't feel any real draw to the movie...

I think it might be Mr.Big. He had a heart thing in one episode of the series, I believe it was in the 5th season.

I think that if they kill anyone off, it will be one of the guys, like Big or Steve. And the girls will come together with love and support, as always. Because the whole theme of that show is the amazing friendship and strong bond these women share.

    So that's my guess.

I'll be horrified if it's one of the girls...seriously. I'd bawl my eyes out.

Mabye they will introduce a new character like a long lost sister of carrie's and then that person will die. I was depressed enough when the show ended - I wont' be able to deal if one of the girls dies.

I can't believe that nobody things Stanford might be the one to die if this has any truth to it.

I think it might be Stanford; he is close to all of the girls, and it would be terrible for him to go!

    I vote Charlotte.

Oh wait...That's not what we're doing?

I love the show, and frankly if they kill someone off it'll just mean that's really the end of the show. That'd be a bummer.

omg! i don't think would leave carrie at the alter; he dies man, i wanted them riding off into the sunset together. so then i guess he will have left everything to her and she's a bizillionaire and that's why they are all in bathing suits in the one trailer. boo to big's death! (and yes i know it's not confirmed)

Hmm, I really don't think it's Big. When I saw the cast filming in NYC at the Bryant Park hotel (where they shot the wedding scene) one of days they were shooting Big (in a fancy tux) getting into a limo/town car/some sort of fancy car and a white bouquet getting thrown at the car after he gets in and the car drives away. They seriously shot the scene a million times (Just Big, no dialogue, just walking, getting into the car, tux on, and some production assistant throwing one of the million bouquets at the car).

Now, of course they could have edited this scene out. But, my bet is that he does show up at some point.

I thought about Samantha dieing too, but I don't think they would do that just in case this movie does extremely well and they want to make a sequel someday (with Aidan??). I think it will be Steve's mom.
