It's Official: Final Harry Potter Book to Be Two Movies

It was a rumor before, and now it's confirmed: the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is to be made into two separate films: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. The films are set to be released in November 2010 and May 2011.

The movies will be shot back-to-back and will be directed by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince director David Yates.

Apparently, "adapting the novel would have resulted in truncating large swaths of it or making an extra-long feature in order to fit everything in. The studio found itself in a situation similar to Quentin Tarantino with Kill Bill, where splitting one long movie in two worked best creatively." Also, you know, Potter movies are a ginormous money-makers for Warner Brothers so . . . there's that.

What do you think about this news? And should the two movies have different titles than simply Part 1 and Part 2? What would you title them?

GOOOOD. im always so upset when they take out half the stuff...
and this way they can make more money... everybody wins!
(although the last movie STANK in my opinion... it just was so far from what i imagine when reading the book and too much was left out.)

YES! I'm so happy! Hopefully this will fully do justice to the book! Maybe the first one could be called Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and the second one could be called Harry Potter and the Seventh Horcrux?

I'm definitely fine with this. It always drives me a little crazy when they take out parts that I considered vital to the books, so this is a good way to make sure everything gets in! (And I bet they get more money out of it too!)

i think it's a really smart decision. the more cynical people say that it's for more money, but i just recently finished listening to the audiobook (i read the book ages ago), and i forgot how much story there is to tell. i can already imagine that the 2 parts could easily be 2-3 hours, EACH. i would've hated if they took too many creative licenses and cropped it into one three hour, rushed movie.

Great decision to do it this way since there is so much of the story that needs to be told. It seems like we all win with this decision.

I think it would be horrible to change the title...then it wouldn't be matching the books at all. This choice for title is just a bit more satisfaction that they may keep it very close to the actual context of the novels. Yeah I agree that the Order movie was awful! And I so miss how in the books, the wizards just don't "get" how to dress like muggles, but in the movies it was avoided...it was such an adoring part!

The movies should have the same title as the book. It doesn't bother me that it says part 1 and part 2. But I'm so happy that they decided to split the movie into two rather than cutting all the good stuff out.

    Yay! Smiling

i agree- i'm so glad they split it up so they can try to get as much detail in as possible! it'd be a shame to lose out on key parts. and calling it part 1 and 2 is fine cause the rest of the movies follow the book names, so why change it up now

Wasn't Gone with the Wind +3.5 hours. HP could have had an intermission. I just hope that each movie is 2+ hours and not two movies that are 1.5 hours.

I am 100% behind this decision. It would have been awful if they cut big chunks out of the last film for time's sake.

This is great, the movies always cut so much. And, of course they should have the same name.

I think it's great. I started reading the books after seeing the first movie. The movies to me are good in their own way apart from the books because of the cast, I love my HP escapes when the films come out (nerd).

Having two films to send off the gang is perfect IMO.

Jeez, people, I'm not saying to change the name of the movie! I thought it would be interesting to hear what subtitles (after the words Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) people could come up with for Parts 1 and 2.

don't know about the first part but the second part could be "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: The Battle Of Hogwarts" although that's kind of the longest movie title in the world hahaha.

and i too am glad that they've split it into two movies. the fifth movie wasn't horrible, but they cut out so much from the book that it just didn't seem like the same story. i'm rereading the seventh book now out of book boredom and there's really not anything they could cut out without leaving gaping holes in the plot. so now we get the full story and they get twice the profits...everyone wins!!!

well they've never been shy to leave GAPING HOLES in the last ones... i watched the 2 or 3 first ones before reading the books and i constantly had to ask my friend what was going on because there were so many essential things they left out. Since she had read the books, she explained stuff to me and i was like Ohhh that makes sense, why the hell didnt they put that in the movie!

I'm wondering where they will split it...I think it might be best to end the first one after they get to Shell Cottage, or maybe right after Gringotts. That part is fairly dramatic, with you-know-who realizing that Harry is after the horcruxes. Just MHO. Smiling

    Part one

    Part two

other than that it would be retarded to do something like "HP and the deathly hallows:The forest and the waiting" and "HP and the deathly hallows: Neville strikes back"

I think they are doing the final book a favor by splitting it in two movies. That book covers so much ground, and being the seventh and final volume, I think it's important to do it justice and not leave any vital detail out.

Good idea, IMHO. I hated it when they missed important parts out in the previous films, and I really wouldn't mind paying twice - Harry Potter is worth it.

Yes! Two parts, 2 movies to look forward to. Though they´d better be incredibly faithful to the book and not leave out essential parts. I can´t believe Harry we shan´t have any more Harry books. Sob. They are amazing.

caterpillargirl, lmao. I'm glad they've decided t do two movies. Gone With the Wind worked because back in 1939 people didn't mind sitting in a theater for 5 hours. It was the depression. Anything to take their minds off their worries! But these days people (especially kids) are too impatient to sit for such a long time.

I like how "Battle for Hogwarts" sounds.
    That works for Part 2.

But where are they going to end the first movie?

They will probably end it on a bit of a cliffhanger. The end of your second act has to be the lowest point for the main character so if you split DH in 2 parts, the natural low point for Harry in the first half is when Ron leaves. The final act of the first film will then probably consist of Harry and Hermione at Godric's Hollow - and will end on a sort of upswing when Ron returns, destroys the locket, and will end finally with them getting caught by Fenrir Greyback.

I think it's a GREAT idea, and I have long been thinking of titles...

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: The end of the Journey begins.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Battle for Hogwarts

i think its great that the movie was spilt into half...
There was a lot to be show in the movie as there was a lot of excting scenes and contain in the book... the storyline is also certainly darker than before since Harry and hie two best friend had begun their Journey in searching for Voldemort's remaining Horcruxes... and also the Dark Lord taking control over the wizarding world...

    I think that...

    Part 1 Should be call:
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows : The Start Of The Last Journey

    Part 2 Should be called:
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows : The Final Battle For Hogwarts
